Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Cemetery Sunday

The blessing of graves will commence at Rathcline cemetery on Sunday 1st July followed by Lanesboro Cemetery on Sunday 8th and finishing on Sunday 15th July in Clonbonny cemetery.

During the past week it has been great to see so many people in each cemetery tending to their family graves. With only a few weeks to go it would be wonderful to have all graves in each graveyard in pristine condition.

We all appreciate the need for people in our area to be trained and reskilled in the use of the defibrillator. It is a wonderful opportunity for people to train in the use of the defibrillator and the opportunity for those already trained to up-skill to the new developments in the use of the defibrillator.

Presently there is a course for people interested for the first time and also an up-skilling course for those having previously done the course. If you are interested you should leave your name into Martina or Bridgie O’Brien before Sunday 10th June.

Marvellous Day in Galway

Galway University Sports Grounds was again the venue for the Connaught Athletic Championships – under 13 and upwards. The club had some pretty good results particularly in the throwing events.

Connaught Champions for 2012 are Stephen O’Dowd U15 in both hammer and discus, Larissa Noone U14 Hammer and Mark Brady senior Shot, winning on his final throw.

Silver medallists were: Niall Keane U15 Hammer, Larissa Noone U14 discus, Radek Pawdoski U13 Javelin, Mark Brady Senior Discus and Laura U17 in a very competitive Long Jump. Bronze medallists for third place were Stephen O’Dowd U15 Shot, Niall Keane U15 Discus, Laura Peters U17 Discus, Radek Pawdoski U13 Shot, Larissa Noone U14 Shot and Conor English U16 Hurdles – the only track medal for the club. Congratulations to all, especially those that did not make it into the medals. There will be other days!

Star of the day for obvious reasons was Mark Brady.

Congratulations are also in order to Laura Reynolds, Mohill A.C. who last week got the qualifying time for the Race Walk in the Olympics next months. Laura and Elaine Scally had some great tussles over cross-country a few years back when the Lough Ree lass, more often than not, got the better of the exchanges. Laura turned to race walking and with the help of her coach Colin Griffin she made a successful transition. Colin also has achieved the “A” qualifying time for London. The club wishes them both well and the will do Leitrim and Ireland proud.

Text Alert Public Meeting

A public meeting will be held in St Mary’ Hall Lanesboro on Monday night next 25th June at 9pm  in relation to the set-up of a new Local Community Alert Group called  “Rathcline Text Alert”.

We urge all parishioners to attend this important meeting which will be attended by the Local Garda, The Superintendent and the Crime Prevention Officer. The meeting will inform the community on how best to work together as a community to prevent crime in the Rathcline Area and make our community a nicer place to live.

The text alert system has been running in other parts of county Longford and has been a terrific success for the  people in their communities and has had many successes in crime prevention and indeed crime arresting.

It is very important that every townsland and housing estates in the parish are represented with a god number of inhabitants. This is a vital community support and must be embraced by everyone especially in these times.

Lanesboro Community Games

Following our report from the County Track and Field finals last week, we omitted reporting an additional individual medal winner,  Hannah Shea won a silver medal in the U-14 Girls Shot Putt, so sorry to Hannah for leaving this out last week. This brings the tally of medals won a t the county championship to 31 in total – including relays – so once again – well done to all involved.

Lanesboro Primary School Woodland Walk.

The Lanesboro Primary School Parents’ Association annual sponsored walk took place on Sunday Last.  There was a great turn out and a very enjoyable evening was had by all attending.  It is fantastic to have such an amenity as the Commons North Woodland walk, and the playground to hold this event.  Thank you to all the people across the parish who sponsored the children and to the parents and others who came along to ensure the good turnout.  Well done to all the footballers for getting to the schools final last week.

Finally, a reminder of the importance of supporting the new Club Rathcline Lotto scheme. Due to the redevelopment of Clonbonny, the club are required to repay €20,000 of the Credit Loan each year. The Club Rathcline Scheme has been launched with the primary purpose being to raise funds for the repayment of this loan. Any additional funds will pay day-to-day costs incurred by the club. The opening jackpot starts off at €600, and if the jackpot is not won in a particular draw €100 will be added to the pool the following week. For each week that the jackpot is not won, 4 members of the subscription list will receive €25 each. The annual subscription fee for the Lotto is €100, and is payable by either Standing Order, a Full Year Cash Payment or Bi-Yearly Cash Payments of €50. Participants who choose to pay the Full Year Cash Payment will be included in a draw for a weekend away to the value of €200. The subscription fee works out at a little over two euro per week, and the club would appreciate your support. The club would also like to thank all those who have already subscribed.

Cúl Camps

As school holidays are almost upon us our focus now changes to our local Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camp. As in previous years these camps provide boys and girls – between the ages of 6 and 13 – with an action-packed and fun-filled week of activity during the summer holidays which revolves around maximising enjoyment and sustaining participant involvement in Gaelic Games while also supplying each child with a full kit and gear bag. This year our local camp will take place again in Clonbonny from Monday 30th July to Friday 3rd August. Numbers have been strong in our camp over the past number of years and we hope that this year will exceed all previous years and break all records. Let your kids be part of a wonderful week in Clonbonny.

Discounted bookings can be availed of by visiting www.gaa.ie/kelloggsculcamps. If you are considering sending your son/daughter to a camp this summer we would definitely recommend a Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camp. For all up to date information please see the Coaching and Games Notes in the Longford Leader each week or visit www.longfordgaa.ie.
