Children’s Nature Walk

A children’s nature walk has been organised to take place in the Commons in Lanesboro on Sunday next 15th July. All children are invited to gather in the car park at the back of St. Mary’s Hall. This should be a wonderful and knowledgeable walk and one that all children should not miss.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Mary and Fintan Farrell and family, Rathcline, on the death of Mary’s sister Teresa Gunning, Johnstown, Athlone, Co. Roscommon.

Brothers going for glory

Next weekend promises to be a busy weekend for Andy and Breda Murtagh and family on the playing field of Hyde Park. Brian the elder son will take part in the qualifier game in Hyde Park on Saturday at 2pm where Roscommon take on the might of Tyrone. Having beaten Armagh in the previous the Roscommon team goes into the game with a great deal of confidence.

On Sunday the youngest son Diarmuid takes to the field with the Roscommon minors when they take on Mayo in what should be an enthralling game. Diarmuid was one of the leading players in the extra time victory over a much fancied Galway side and they must be fancied to take Mayo and the Connaught minor title.

We wish the lads and their team mates the very best of luck.

Ballyboro Scouts

The local scouts trop have taken part in a new intensive training programme entitles “one programme”, The course was attended by scout leaders and members of different sections of the local troop.

The new programmes principle is that each section delivers the programme in a similar way to develop young people in social, physical, intellectual, character, emotional, and spiritual ways known as ‘spices’. Scouting is adventure learning by doing and having friends with your friends. We wish the local troop well as they head off to Lough Key Forest Park, Boyle, for a summer camp with other scouts from the scout county.

Two Provinces Triathlon comes to Lanesboro

Lanesboro Triathlon club will host its second Two Provinces triathlon in Lanesboro on Saturday next 14th July. Such was the success of last year’s inaugural running of the event that this year the high profile car dealership Audi Athlone at Michael Moore Car sales has winningly and happily done a great deal with the club. This is a phenomenal achievement by a club so young and continues to go from strength to strength. Many hours, days and weeks have been put into the preparation of the event and it is hoped that they will be blessed with a great day and crowd.

The race shall consist of a 750m swim in the River Shannon, followed by a 20k bike ride over a flat course and will finish over a 5k fast run course an presently there is a huge entry for the event. At the moment there is an entry of over 200 entrants and it is expected that it will reach its 250 maximum before Saturday’s event.

There will also be a kids Triathlon on the day starting at 9am. The race shall consist of a 100m swim, 1km bike on a closed road and a 500m run on grass.

The entire community is invited to come along and enjoy what is a tremendous event and give our support to the many participants. The race will commence at 10.30am and it will be great to have as many as possible there for the junior and senior event.

Lough Ree AC Remembers

If you have been watching your television during the past week, you will have noticed that the European Track & Field Championships were taking place in Helsinki. Fionnula Britton, current European Cross-Country champion was best of the Irish when finishing 4th in the 10,000meters. Records show that when the Irish girl first won the Irish U17cross-country title in Dunleer, Co. Louth,   Deirdre Hopkins, Newtowncashel was 5th in the same race.

Joe Robinson (Kilcock) also represented Ireland in Helsinki in the 1500m. Jason Gray, The Green, won the Irish U14 800m title some years ago and Robinson was 14th in the same race. In case one may think that the Kildare lad had an off day, Darren Mc Brearty (Letterkenny) another current Irish international was 8th also in that race. Jason, take note!

While we are reminiscing, let’s congratulate Diarmuid Murtagh on scoring the winning point for Roscommon minors in their victory over Galway at the weekend. The Ballyleague youth won the All-Ireland Ball Throw some years ago. Today there are some useful girls following in his footsteps. Apart from Duileach Ryan the boys would find it difficult to get the sliothar near his standard.

This year our local camp will take place again in Clonbonny from Monday 30th July to Friday 3rd August. Numbers have been strong in our camp over the past number of years and we hope that this year will exceed all previous years and break all records.
