Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Championship Win

Well done to the Rathcline GAA Intermediate team who had a tough hard win in the opening game of the championship against a teak tough Ardagh side. Ardagh lead by four points at half time and the second half was nip and tuck throughout and the score of the day was a goal by Conor Casey which proved to be the turning of the tide in Rathcline’s favour.

Following the championship draw on Sunday night last Rathcline were drawn to meet Kenagh in the next round on the weekend after next.

Text Alert Update

If you did not receive an envelope for the text alert system you can collect one in O’Brien’s shop. If you have not returned your envelope yet you should do so immediately to O’Brien’s. The system is now set to be launched as all the name received so far have been entered into the system and the text alert system will be up and running in the next week.

A very big thank you to everybody that has contributed and supported the text alert system.

Sympathy

Would like to extend our sympathy to Renee, Fabian and Diane Walsh, Rathcline Road on the death last week in Boston of Renee’s brother in law George Gazebien,

Draw This Weekend

Rathcline GAA this weekend will commence their first draw of their new ‘Rathcline GAA Lotto’. The lotto is based on the first 6 numbers drawn in the National Lottery every Saturday night; If you match 4 of the 6b numbers drawn you will win or share the Rathcline GAA Lotto. The cost of entry is €100, payable in €100 as a once off payment or 2x€50 payments. It is an average of under €2 each week and the club seeks your support. The full monies raised from this draw will go towards the payment of the club debt which is quite substantial. The facilities for all our players men, women and underage  is second to none and we must make every effort to help defray the debt while we must also allow the club to plan and develop for the future of our players and future players.

Tickets are still available in O’Brien’s or from any member of the committee. Sold and unsold tickets are to be returned to the clubhouse on this Thursday evening between 8.30and 9.30pm.

High Praise Indeed

In recent days Steve and Theresa Ormsby proprietors of Clarkes Bar on Main Street received a mail signed by two couples from Dun Laoghaire who visited Lanesboro and Ballyleague while they holidayed on the Shannon. They were high in their praise of Lanesboro and Ballyleague for the improvement of facilities in the town since their last visit in 2009.

I quote from their letter “We were very impressed with the overall appearance of the facilities and amenities. Particularly, the street lighting, signage, furniture, flowers etc., road markings, shop front displays, parks, flowers, grass cut to perfection. The bridge painted and the shores cleaned. Toilets and shower facilities spotless. Best we have seen on the Shannon so far.

Good bin facilities, waste segregation, excellent mooring/lighting and access to town from old and new jettys.

Best of all is the helpful and friendly people of the town”.

Having seen this mail is wonderful to feel that the great work being done by all sides is being noticed and commented upon. Since the turn of the year work on both sides of the bridge has continued unabated and credit must go to the people that are making Lanesboro and Ballyleague beautiful.

It is just a few years ago Ed Walsh the founding President of University College Limerick and in the words of Fintan O’Toole ‘one of the most dynamic, challenging and infuriating figures in Irish public life’ at a meeting with Ciaran Mullooly and myself said that this was one of the most important ways to go with the development of our town.  He too was a visitor to Lanesboro Ballyleague on the river Shannon – again highlighting the importance of the river Shannon to our community.

Hopefully Waterways Ireland, both Longford and Roscommon County Councils, development agencies such as Enterprise Ireland and I.D.A and most importantly politicians from all sides will take on board the comments of these influential people and also the working environment being created by both communities and look favourably on proposal being made for the development of our area. We have a beautiful and terrific community and we are rightly proud of it.

Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Our community is laden down with many talented people covering all facets of life. One of these people is Alan Flanagan, son of Jimmy and Bernie Flanagan, Rathcline who is staging his play “Irreconcilable Difference” at the world renowned Edinburg Fringe Festival, for the month of August. The play includes the audience being asked at the end which one of a long suffering married couple should live or die.

Alan is continuing to do much work in Performing Arts and this play is just another one of Alan’s successes. Good luck Alan!

Death

It is with great sadness we learned of the death on Monday 23rd July at the Laurel Lodge Nursing Home. Longford, of Sr. Emmanuel Farrelly, Convent of Mercy, Lanesboro. Sr. Emmanuel came to the Mercy community in Lanesboro a number of years ago. She was a native of County Leitrim and she was a nun with great charisma. She was inflicted with multiple sclerosis but she did not let it dampen her enthusiasm for life, the spirit she exhibited was infectious. She was a lady the in whose company you always felt great.  She could be seen making her way from the St. Mary’s Church on a motorised wheelchair until she could no longer make the journey. Her remains reposed in the Convent Chapel until the removal of her remains to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague on Tuesday. Following her Funeral Mass her remains were interred in Clonbonny cemetery. To her Mercy Community, brothers J.P. Mick, Gerry and John, her sister Ann relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Found

A black Mojo Mobile Phone was found in the Car Park early on Saturday morning and has been given into the Garda Station where the owner can reclaim it.

It appears to be a good one someone may have lost it on Friday night on the way home from the Summer Festival Launch in the Quarry.

Lough Ree A.C.

Saturday was the 3rd and final day of the All-Ireland Track & Field championships in Tullamore for the U14 to U19 age groups. Larissa Noone, U14 Shot and Stephen O’Dowd, U15 hammer were the only two club athletes involved.

Full marks to Larissa for breaking her holidays in Achill to travel to the Co. Offaly venue and take on the best in the country, knowing that 3rd in Connaught would not be enough. There are so many youngsters today that are not competitive, afraid to take part, as they might be beaten.

O’Dowd fared better and got to the last eight in the hammer, where he got three extra throws. Yes, Stephen had a good day as he came home with a lovely fleece jacket that had his name on the back (along with other names) – so there was one pleased punter on the day.

Again Larissa and Stephen are a credit to themselves, club, and family. Well done to both.

It was nice to meet Annie Mae Buckley (nee Murray) from Derrygeel who was an official with the Dublin club, Raheney Shamrocks. She was inquiring about her old acquaintances in Lanesboro
