Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Robbery at Clonbonny Cemetery

Last Sunday afternoon when visiting their family grave at Clonbonny on Sunday last two sisters encountered a fate that one would not expect when you are visiting Clonbonny or indeed any graveyard. Upon return they discovered their car window broken and a purse stolen from their car. This happened at a time when there was a good bit of movement of people in the vicinity and amazingly it went unnoticed to everyone. This shows how opportunity always catches the eye of the criminal and also how cautious we have to be at all times. While we hear of these events happening and are mostly on our guard it just goes to show that we must be ultra-cautious always.

I find it particularly sad that in our community we have to be so cautious and careful with all we do. Gone are the days that we could be a trusting community and now everything has to be nailed down. We as a community must try and reverse the way everything is going. We have to say stop and we must have proper justice meted out to those that inflict these despicable crimes in our own community.

If you have any information please contact Lanesboro Gardaí 3321102.

Robbery of Equipment

It is unpleasant and hurtful for our community that I have again to report a second crime in our area over the past few days. The local FÁS scheme is doing so much good work in our parish and to think that the strimmer and mower they use in the up keep of the town was stolen from the lock up shed at the back of St. Mary’s Hall on Thursday night last. The equipment is the property of the Lanesboro Tourism Co-Op. The door was locked and the lock was taken off the door when the thieves stole the items already mentioned. The FÁS scheme is a group that has done so much good work within our community over the years and it is shameful that people should steal their work tools.

If you have any information regarding this robbery you are asked to contact Lanesboro Gardaí at 3321102.

St. Mary’s Church Update

A note to inform everyone as to the progress at St. Mary’s Church. The roof has now been slated and when the ridge tiles are put on it will fully complete the roofing. Work is about to begin on the extension of the sacristy, the new toilets and the boiler room and as I write preparations are proceeding with the insulation of the walls. It is great to see so much progress being made despite the inclement weather conditions since the job started.

Inflatable Football Pitch

The Leinster GAA Roadshow is winding its way throughout the province and it is a pleasure for Shannon Gaels Minor club to be hosts of this great idea from Leinster Council. The Roadshow consists of an inflatable pitch which is about half the size of the minor pitch in Clonbonny on Friday next 24th August. The Roadshow will be at the club grounds in Clonbonny from 11a.m. until 3p.m. and it should be a huge attraction to our young players and parents alike. The club have invited neighbours Cashel, St. Faithleach’s and Grattan’s to come along and be part of the fun. The club invites all parents in the locality to Clonbonny where they will be a cup of tea/coffee available while the youngsters have lots of fun on the inflatable pitch.

Well done to Dúileach Ryan who progressed through heats and Semi-Finals to reach the National final of the U-10 Freestyle event where he finished in 5th place.  This was a great achievement for Dúileach in this very competitive event and also he will be young enough to swim in this age level again next year.

Following the recent fire at their clubhouse that caused many hundreds of thousands of euros worth of damage it is vital for them that they replace all the damaged and burned equipment as soon as possible. Lough Ree Sub Aqua club is vital to us as a community as much as it is so vital for the search and rescue they carry out for families throughout the country. It is very important that the entire area comes out and supports the club to get back to its firm standing once again.

Ticket sellers will be out and about throughout the local area over this coming week and we ask you to be as supportive as you possibly can be. Tickets can also be bought in O’Brien’s.
