Give Blood
The Blood Transfusion Board will be holding a blood donation clinic this Wednesday 19th and 20th September in the Longford Arms Hotel from 4.30 to 8.30 each afternoon and evening.
There is always a great demand for blood by the hospitals from the blood bank and it is vitally important that everybody that can turns up on these evenings to donate and help save lives.
The Gathering 2013
A meeting to put in place a group to organise the Gathering 2013 for Lanesboro will take place in Adie Farrell’s meeting room on Tuesday next 25th September at 8.30pm.
The Gathering 2013 will be a celebration of all things Irish and communities will host events inviting people departed our parish to come back and join in what should be a marvellous community reunion.
Wedding
On Friday 10th August the wedding took place at the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon of Brendan Healy, son of Sheila and Gerard Healy, Shannon Grove, Ballyleague, and Emma Mannion, daughter of Tom and Winifred Mannion, Stonepark House, Roscommon. Bestman was Vincent Healy, brother of the groom, groomsmen were Enda Kenny and David Malone both friends of the groom and David Healy, nephew of the groom. Chief Bridesmaid was Laura Mannion sister of the bride and bridesmaids were Chloe Mannion sister of the bride and Dawn Hand and Edel Kenny both friends of the bride. The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. John Coughlan, Roscommon assisted by Bishop Christopher Jones, Bishop of diocese of Elphin. The wedding reception took place at the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon. We wish the happy couple many years of wedded happiness.
Lanesborough/Ballyleague Community Childcare
The playgroup for younger children will start on Monday 1st October, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 9.30am – 12 noon. There will be a meeting on Thursday 4th October at 10.30am for anyone interested in resuming the parent/toddler group. Afterschool care is currently available at our service. Huge turnout at 5K Road Race
For the second year running Lough Ree AC’s prayers to Apollo were answered and last Wednesday 12th September the final leg of the Ros 5k Series took place on a clear and sunny September evening.
In recent days and weeks all the talk has been about community spirit and the run on Wednesday exemplified community spirit at its best. It was the turn of the local Lough Ree Athletic Club to host the 5k Road race and at the reception afterwards the competitors were loud in their praise for the local club. Lough Ree AC in turn complimented Rathcline GAA for the use of their changing facilities and function room for the after race cuppa. Lanesboro Triathlon club were also on hand to throw their weight behind the event. Niall Donoghue provided the First Aid cover for the race and Joe Mullooly and Joe Mc Grath were on hand with the defibrillator. The ladies helped finish off a great evening by providing the refreshments afterwards. Last but not least the local Gardaí who insured safety on the road. The club would like to thank all locals who supported the run especially former coach Jim Finn.
A massive turnout of 172 runners set off from Clonbonny on an accurately measured 5k course that took them out the old bog road and back along the Longford to Lanesboro road to finish at Rathcline GAA Clubhouse.
The first male home on the night was Adrian Smith from Roscommon AC, in a time of 17.16. Pat Sherry from Galway City Harriers who made the trip from Loughrea was in second place in 17.39 and Donal Mulligan was third in 17.47
Michelle Lannon from Boyle was the first lady home in 20.17 followed very closely by Newtowncashel teacher Maura Dervin in 20.21 with Aileen McNamara from Athenry AC in third place in 20.22. Gillian Clyne, a former Lough Ree AC athlete made the trip from Kildare and was the first local finisher and won the award as the first local to finish.
It was great to see Gillian back “in harness”. She is a former athlete with lough Ree AC and a useful one at that, with several All-Ireland medals to her credit in juvenile competitions.
Lanesboro Badminton Club
The club will hold their AGM on this coming Thursday 20th September at 9.30pm in St. Mary’s Parish Hall. All club members are asked to attend. Anyone interested in joining the club for the year 2012/2013 is most welcome
Dance Classes
A new season of dance classes will commence in Ballyleague hall on this Friday night from 8.30pm to 11.30pm. All are welcome to come along and learn the Slow Waltz, Foxtrot, Old -Time Waltz, Quick Step, Jive and the Military Two Step. Ladybird Shop
The Ladybird shop on Main Street is getting ready for Halloween and if you have any costumes that have been outgrown you are asked to donate them to the shop. The Christmas club is up and running and it allows toys and other goodies to be reserved and 10% will be donated to Barretstown the charity that helps children with cancer.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Breda and Noel Duffy and family, Moneen, on the death of Breda’s father, Kieran Fallon, Cloverhill, Roscommon, who was interred in Oran cemetery on Thursday last.
Baby Massage Course
A baby massage 5 week course will start on Saturday 13th October at the Lough Ree Co-op, Main St.

Lough Ree Golfing Society
The 4th outing of 2012 was to Delvin Castle Golf Club on Saturday last 15th September. The weather was dry, the course played well, the company was excellent and a great day’s golf was enjoyed by all players.
The front nine was won by Society captain, Liam Rosemond, the back nine by Jarlath Reynolds and the par 3 competition was won by Mick Brennan. Gerard Heneghan had 35 points for second place being only pipped by Colm Dardis on 36 points. Well played everybody.
The Society now has an exciting finish for the Golfer of the Year competition which is based on the results of the year’s 6 outings. In the lead by one point is captain Liam Rosemond on 31 points and biting on Liam’s heels is Society treasurer, Colm Dardis with 30 points– so watch this space! Further down but still potential winners are Sean Brennan with 18 points and Brendan Whitty (the defending champion) on 17. The results of the next two outings: Moate on Saturday 20th October and Strokestown on Saturday 24th November will determine the eventual winner; so it is still all to play for!!
The outing to Moate is on their club’s Open Weekend so please text you name early to Frank, 0879730611, as the Society needs to fill in our names on the Open Time Sheet in Moate.
So far the Society has been lucky all year with the weather; it has been mostly dry and pleasant despite the bad summer. Fingers crossed our next two outings will continue in the same manner.
Lough Ree 2000 Bridge Club
The Club Bridge started on Monday night last 10th September. There was a good attendance for the first night back. The first results of the new season were: N/S: Gross / Nett: 1st Phil Chalmers and Mai Casey, 2nd Nancy Dolan and Eileen Kelly and 3rd Peggy and Mark Crehan.

Spanish Conversational Classes at Lanesboro Library
Are you interested in learning conversational Spanish? These classes are aimed at adults wishing to develop their conversational skills and are particularly suited to people travelling abroad or even for parents wishing to help their children with their homework.
The class will be one hour per week for six weeks. Each six week course costs €30.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club
It has not been a happy time in finals for our teams with our under 12 and 13 teams being defeated by Dromard two weeks ago and on Saturday last our juvenile team were beaten with the last kick of the game by St. Vincent’s. St. Vincent’s were overwhelming favourites going into the game and it was a remarkable performance to be within a whisker of winning the final. The club congratulates both Dromard and St. Vincent’s on their final victories over our teams.
The club would like to thank Gerard Farrell, Farrell’s Agri Supplies for his sponsoring of togs and socks for the final and to Sean Mimnagh for his sponsorship of food to the club. The club would like to acknowledge the support of everyone, from Shannon Gaels and Grattan Óg, that helped out and brought food to the clubhouse in Clonbonny for the after match reception – it was much appreciated.
Our Under14 team played a stormer in Clonbonny on Sunday; they really played their hearts out, as they did all year, when going down to Dromard in Clonbonny.
Scór na nÓg is now back in season and the club is actively seeking young people to represent the club in this year’s competitions. Last year out sketch team reached the Leinster final and the club is hoping for a repeat from the sketch team and from some of the other disciplines.
The club is seeking competitors in quiz, instrumental, solo singing, set dancing and figure dancing. The club is also looking for people adept in all of the above that will take these young people and prepare them for the events. We have so many talented people in our parish and we hope they will share their expertise with our young people.

The club will once again host a Seamus O’Rourke play in St. Mary’s Hall on Saturday 3rd November for one night only. The play ‘For Club and County – the making of the making of our county team. Tickets will be on sale shortly.
The club extends its sympathy to the Farrell family on the death of senior club vice president and long-time supporter of our club Joe Farrell, Lisnacusha. Also to the Crookes family, The Green and Vija Kancane, Gerard and Mechal Mc Carthy, Curraghrua the club extends its sympathy on their recent sad bereavements. The club also extends its sympathy to Pat and Enda Rock on the death of Martina Rock, Church View.
The club says hard luck to both the senior club team and ladies senior team on their recent championship defeats.
Rathcline GAA
Our senior team defeated Abbeylara by five points in the penultimate round of the league last weekend. The team have one remaining game, away to Clonguish.
The winner of the All-Ireland Football tickets was Jenny Rice. The winner of €30 was Peter Skelly, while Kevin McHugh won the third placed prize of €20.
This week’s winning lotto numbers were 11, 25, 27, 28, 35 and 45. There was no winner of the €1,200 jackpot. The four winners of €25 each were Eddy Valentine, Madeline Murray, Anthony & Evelyn Farrell and Joe Kiernan.
Commiserations to the Western Gaels Under16s on their narrow championship defeat at the weekend.

Junior Ladies Championship Final: Best of luck to our Junior Ladies & management in the Junior B County Final this Saturday against St. Barry’s in Strokestown at 1.00pm. Please come along & support.
Minor Championship: Our minor men play against St. Dominic’s on Saturday evening next at 5.30pm in Knockcroghery.
Golden Jubilee Celebrations: To mark our 50th Year of St. Faithleachs GAA Club, preparations are underway for future events. Details of the events will follow in the near future.
Lotto: The numbers drawn were – 1, 17, 18 and 29. There was no jackpot winner and the five €20 winners were Jack Mc Gloin, Cloontuskert. Tommy Kelly, Cloonadra, Joe Donlon, Moher, Breda Glennon, Cloonadra and James Casey, Lanesboro. The next draw will take place on Tuesday 25th September for a Jackpot of €6,900.

Lanesboro Pike Angling Club
The club will be holding a boat competition on Sunday the 30th of September in Lanesboro. This is an open competition and fishing will take place from 11am to 4pm. The entry fee is €30 per boat and all proceeds from this competition will be donated to the Lough Ree Sub Aqua club.
Entries taken from 10.30am at Lanesboro harbour behind the car-park. This is a catch and release competition. All boats must carry a suitable tank to hold fish and all fish must be returned safely to the water. It is required that all anglers have club insurance.
Following the weigh-in the presentation of prizes will take place in the Yacht Bar.
There will be numerous cash prizes on the day and there will also be a raffle for spot prizes.
