The Gathering in Lanesboro

On Tuesday night last in Adie Farrell’s meeting room a number of people came together to initiate the beginning of the ‘Gathering 2013’. The ‘Gathering 2013’ will welcome people home from all ends of the world to all the events, that the excellent committees, within our community holds during the year and propose to host the greatest welcome home festival gala weekend for everyone that ever resided  in our parish.

We are seeking to set up a data base of all people living in our parish and their families that no longer live amongst us. Included in that database will be all the people that lived in the parish and while their family no longer resides in the parish we want to welcome them back too. The task ahead is mammoth but we know with the support of everyone from every townsland we will make a tremendous success of the ‘Gathering 2013’

The committee elected on Tuesday night was Chairman Adie Farrell, Vice Chairman Gerard Farrell, Secretary Joe O’Brien, delegate to County committee Anne O’Reilly.

The next meeting will take place on Wednesday week 10th October in Adie Farrell’s meeting room at 8.30pm.

Death

It was with great sadness and regret we learned of the death on Saturday 22nd at the County Hospital, Roscommon of Pearl Crooke, The Green. Pearl was a refined lady with a lady like disposition that endeared her to everyone that had the pleasure to know her. Her gentle ways and gentle manner will be sadly missed. Pearl always had a word and time for everyone. She was totally dedicated to her family and their progression through life. She was a great support to her husband George and indeed until recent times where you seen one you seen the other. Pearl was a great neighbour and friend her passing will leave a great void in our community. She had a passion for animal welfare and was a volunteer with L.S.P.C.A. where she worked tirelessly. A short time back she fell into ill health and she bore her cross with great fortitude and dignity. Her remains reposed in Farrell’s Funeral Home on Sunday and Monday until the removal of her remains for Service in St. John’s Church, Lanesboro. The attendances at both bore ample testimony to the esteem in which she was held. Her remains were laid to rest at the graveyard of St. George’s Church, Kenagh.

To her husband George, son Roy, daughters Thora, Lorna and Janet, brother Walter, relatives and friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Lough Ree 2000 Bridge Club

Kilgefin Community Games

Kilgefin Community Games will hold the AGM on Monday night next 8th October. All parents are invited to attend. If there is not sufficient interest and support the local Community Games will cease to exist and this will create a tremendous deprivation to all the young people of the parish and their talents. The last few years have been a struggle for the committee and they now feel unable to continue unless more support comes from the local community. If you are interested in this important sporting organisation in the entire Kilgefin  community please either come to the AGM on Monday 8th October at 9pm in Ballyleague hall or contact our Secretary, Angela Walton at 087 7514634.

Fishing Competition Deferred

Due to the poor weather conditions Lanesboro Pike Angling Club regrets that they had to cancel their fishing competition on Sunday last. The club would like to apologise to any members looking forward to this event. The club will set a new date for the competition in the near future. You are advised to keep an eye on the local notes for up to date information.

Lanesboro Triathlon Club

Annual General Meeting: The Lanesboro Triathlon Club shall hold their AGM on Saturday Oct 06th at 8pm in the Lanesboro Co-Op hall. All members are asked to attend.

Congratulations:  More celebrations for Lanesboro Tri Club this weekend as Marie Sudway, Naoise Sudway and Ciaran Sudway finished their year off in style. They headed to the Mourne Olympic Triathlon in Castlewellan Co. Down where Naoise took first in his category in a time of 2:24, then not far behind was Marie, who took first in her age group in a time of 2:32 and soon after that in a time of 2:49 came Ciaran, who was delighted with his race – one which was considered very challenging!!

Fiachra, Marie & Naoise will also now be awarded the ‘National Champion’ titles at the Triathlon Ireland Vodafone awards dinner on Saturday 3rd November. Naoise is  “National Champion in the 16-17 Age Group for the Standard Distance”, Fiachra Sudway is “National Champion in the 18-19 Age Group for the Standard Distance”, while Marie Sudway is “National Championship in her Age Group, Standard Distance”. These awards are hugely deserved after all the hard training and super performances throughout the year! Well done to you all.

Death

The news of the death at Roscommon County Hospital on Wednesday last 26th September of Frances Mc Cormack, Gortgallon sadden the hearts of both parishes. Frances a native of Rosenallis, Co. Laois came to Lanesboro with her late husband Jim – who got a job in the local lime quarry – many years ago. Frances, Jim and family very quickly immersed themselves in our community. The bought the house and land in Gortgallon following the closure of the quarry. Frances, 50 years ago, lost her husband Jim and she was left with a young family to rear. She was big in stature and heart and her strength of mind and will helped her overcome the cross she was left to bear. She worked hard and made sure her children did well –which they all did- and there was never a prouder lady. Frances was a warm hearted lady whose beaming smile and cheery welcome endeared her to everyone. She was a very social lady and enjoyed nothing more than a game of bridge and was a member of the two local clubs. Even during her time of ill health her family took her out to the bridge nights. Frances will be sadly missed by everyone that had the pleasure to know her. Frances was predeceased by her husband Jim, daughter Kathleen, grandson Ronan and daughter-in-law Catherine. The attendance at the reposing of her remains In Gortgallon and again at her Funeral Mass and interment to Rathcline cemetery was a testament to the esteem in which she was held.

To her sons Brian, John, Jim, Pat, Bob and David, sister Till, relatives and friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Lough Ree AC

The results of the last three Tuesday road races are on display in O’Brien’s window. The runs will continue until the changing of the clock later in the month. Note the improvement of Aoife Nolan finishing with her fine win in the County Longford Primary School cross-country last week. The County Roscommon Primary schools will take place this Wednesday . Lets hope there are some brave enough to attend.

Lanesboro Tourism Co-Op

Thursday 4th October the men’s club will re-start At 12 noon.  All are welcome and this will continue every Thursday from here on in.

Lanesboro Tourism Co-op would like to express their thanks to the Lanesboro Gun club for the stocking of the duck pond.

This has been a valuable amenity and we note that from 1st September and the starting of the shooting season that this has been an essential safe place for the wild ducks to find sanctuary.

Lanesboro Tourism Coop would like to thank all the local clubs and organisations that contributed to the hanging baskets in the town this year.

It was noted in the tidy towns report and helped in the achievement of an extra 10 marks.

We do appreciate this financial support and wish all them well in their activities for the year.

Lanesboro Community Games

Lanesboro Community Games will hold their AGM on Wednesday 10th August at 9pm in the Co-Op hall.  At the meeting it will be decided what events will be entered in 2012/13 year.  The last year has been very successful in terms of the level of participation with huge numbers of children, well over 100 kids taking part in activities across the board – achieving great success.    Unfortunately this level of activity cannot be continued due to the few parents involved – so more parents are required to get involved.  There are a number of important changes to the structure of community games at national level that will impact on the timing of the events at local events.  Therefore at AGM it will be decided how all this will be managed.  At the AGM the registration forms for 2012/13 will be issued and registration will take place on the following Wednesday the 17th at 8pm.

The Croker Clash

Helen Feeney, last year, stepped into the ring for a hugely successful ‘white collared’ fight night. This year Helen is not stepping into the ring but she is raising the bar hugely when she is part of the organisers of The Croker Clash that will bring a very special night of celebrity boxing to the Hogan suite in Croke Park on Friday night week 12th October with the doors opening at 7.30pm. The suite will hold 1000 people and I hope that there will be a huge representation from the Rathcline and Kilgefin parishes living in Dublin and the surrounding counties and indeed hopefully many from home will also make the journey to help swell the numbers. Helen has invested huge time and energy in this night and we should all give her our support.

Helen has enlisted the support many superstars and personalities for this very special night. Leading the pack into the ring are Olympic silver medallist John Joe Nevin and Jim (The Pink Panther) Rock who represented Ireland in boxing many times as an amateur before turning professional. Also in attendance will be Michael Carruth gold medallist from the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona and the legend that is the wonderful Jimmy Magee to mention but a few. If you are available on the night there is nowhere else you should be and supporting an extremely wonderful cause.

The proceeds of the night will go to Pieta House – Pieta House, founded in 2006, is a non-profit organisation providing a specialised treatment programme for people who have suicide ideation or who participate in self-harming behaviours. Their services come free of charge and 80% of their funding comes from fundraising events and donations.
