The Gathering in Lanesboro
The next meeting will take place on this Wednesday night 10th October in Adie Farrell’s meeting room at 8.30pm. It is hoped to make definite dates for the coming year regarding the events of the coming year in our parish.
Death
Another shroud of darkness and sadness descended on our communities when the news broke of the sudden death at his residence in Cloontuskert on Friday 5th October of Paddy Rogers. Paddy in recent years moved back to his native area following many years of working and living in Dublin. Paddy began his education in the Abbey NS before being one of the last classes to enter St. Mary’s Secondary School in Ballyleague before its amalgamation with Lanesboro Vocational School. Paddy stood out in life from a very young age as a sportsman he was outstanding while he was an excellent underage player with his native club St. Faithleach’s it was soccer that Paddy really excelled. Paddy moved to Dublin at an early age where he began working in the GPO and by the time of his retirement Paddy had rising to hold a top position within the organisation, This was no surprise to us, as another of Paddy’s traits, was his intelligence and his unassuming and gentle nature. Paddy was also an excellent banjo player and could he make that banjo talk. In recent years he played in Sorohan’s Bar and he was sometimes joined by his daughter Sarah for what were great sessions.
His remains reposed at Farrell’s Funeral Home before being removed to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague on Sunday evening. On Monday his Funeral Mass took place and Paddy was interred in his native Cloontuskert. To his daughters, Sarah and Katie, brother Michael, sisters Mary and Ann, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.
Lough Ree 2000 Bridge Club
The results of the competition held on Monday night last were: Howell 9 Tables, 22 Boards.

Digital Photography Classes
Shannonside Camera Club has employed a tutor to run classes in Digital Photography .The first class commences on this coming Thursday 11th October in ESB Sports & Social clubhouse starting at 8pm. A nominal fee will be charged for this course of 6 to 8 classes.
Shannon Gaels
The club extends its sympathy to the Brewster family, Clonbonny and the Rogers family, the Abbey on their sad bereavements during the past week.
Primary Schools success
Congratulations to Michael Cleary and Roxboro NS in taking medals in the county Roscommon cross-country championships in Athlone recently. Large numbers were the order of the day and competition was very keen. For that reason great creit must go to newcomers Strokestown and Tarmonbarry for their success.
Lanesboro Bridge Club
The results of the competition held on Wednesday 3rd October are: N/S 1st Kathleen Reilly and Patsy Canavan, 2nd Gemma Douglas and Elish Gray and 3rd Bernadette Gillen and Mona O’Flaherty. E/W 1st Brid Mc Dermott and Una Lawlor, 2nd Frank and Frances Brennan and 3rd Una Clarke and Tom Feeney.
Ballyleague Bingo
The Ballyleague bingo takes place every Thursday night in Ballyleague hall. The bingo start time has changed back to winter time with the first numbers called at 8.30pm. This week the snowball stands at 8.30pm.
Rathcline Ladies
Congratulations to the Rathcline Ladies who represented the club at the Mini 7’s on Saturday last in Dublin. The girls performed magnificently and they made it to the semi-final of the shield competition but were unfortunately beaten by Doonbeg from Co. Clare who went on to win the final.
Rathcline Ladies clothes collection commences again and the club would encourage anyone with unwanted clothes, shoes sheets duvet covers books can you please contact Madaleine at 0861500123. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
Lough Ree AC
The Roscommon Primary schools championships were run off under ideal conditions at Summerhill college grounds on the outskirts of Athlone. While it is disappointing to say that there were no representatives from the three local schools in the Kilgefin parish, there was some satisfaction in the fact that the 3rd finisher in the 5th/6th class boys event was one of Jacqueline Chalmers (O’Malley) seven sons Brian, and another son Joey finished in 13th from an entry of 120 starters. Both helped Roxboro NS to medals in this category.
Jacqui and her brother Johnny were prominent athletes themselves in the early years of the clubs existence.
While most schools taking part were from areas where there were no athletic clubs, it begs the question ‘what is Lough Ree AC doing wrong or is there anything they are not doing that they should be doing’?
Let us wish Fermoyle 3rd/4th girls the very best of luck at the Connaught Finals in Sligo next weekend. One of the trophies up for competition will be the Cahill Cup. This was presented to the Connaught region years ago to commemorate the memory of the late Olive Cahill who was a teacher in Lanesboro girl’s school.
‘Red Sail’ into Clarkes Bar
The most promising group on the Dublin music circuit will make a welcome visit to Clarkes Bar on this Friday night 12th October. A great night is assured and it is a welcome opportunity to hear local girl Sarah Mc Weeney and her group perform locally.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Padraig and Mary Brewster and family, Clonbonny, on the death last week of Padraig’s father Michael Brewster, Farnagh, Longford, last weekend.
Race Night with a difference
Midland Motor club will hold a race night – with a difference- on Sunday 28th October in St. Faithleach’s GAA clubhouse. There is no charge on entry and the club welcomes and invites everyone. There will be 10 races on the evening with anybody in the audience being invited to race. The cars will be attached to string and winder and those invited will have to wind as fast as they can to take their car over the line first. It should be a wonderful evening of fun and excitement and one not to be missed.
New Play for Parish Hall
The club is hosting another one of the award winning Seamus O’Rourke’s play ‘For Club and County – the making of our county team’ in St. Mary’s Parish Hall on Saturday 3rd November at 8.30pm. Tickets will be on sale soon and the club looks forward to your support.
Scór na nÓg practice is on-going and the club is still seeking competitors in quiz, instrumental, solo singing, and set and figure dancing. You are asked to contact Sean Kenny or Brendan Keane.

Rathcline GAA
This week’s winning lotto numbers were 1, 18, 22, 26, 35 and 40. There was no winner of the €1,500 jackpot. The four winners of twenty five euro each were Ronan Cullen, Michael Costello, Mary and James O Flaherty and Ronie Masterson.
The Croker Clash
Don’t forget the Croker Clash in Croke Park on this Friday night. A great night is assured. Doors open at 7.30pm. Be there and support the great work of local girl Helen Feeney.
Knitting & Crochet Club
Do you enjoy Knitting or Crochet? Whether you are a beginner or an experienced Knitter or Crocheter, why not come along and learn or share your knowledge. Shannon Gaels Minor Club
The parish U10 league took place in Clonbonny on Saturday last. A big number attended and a great time was had by all. The club thanks all the parents and their youngsters for a great day. The club says thank you to Niall Keane, Stephen O’Dowd, Sarah and Tanya Farrell for their fine refereeing performances.
The U8 panel are participating in the indoor league and all contacts for information should be made to Duncan Murphy or Sharon Dowd.
Don’t forget the club is putting on ‘For Club and County – the making of our county team ‘in St. Mary’s Parish Hall on Saturday 3rd November at 8.30pm.
The young fella and girls of the club do not stay inactive and a good number of them are deep in practice for a variety show that will take place in St. Mary’s Hall on Saturday 15th December. It promises to a wonderful night especially as we are closing in on Christmas.
Score na nÓg practice is continuing apace and it is great to see so many young people so enthusiastic and a big thank you must go to their mentors.
Man’s Club
Lanesboro over 50’s man’s club restarted on Thursday 4th October
It was an enjoyable afternoon. The club will meet again on the 18th October and all are welcome. Time 12 noon at St Marys Hall, Lanesboro
Spanish Conversational Classes at Lanesboro Library
Are you interested in learning conversational Spanish? These classes are aimed at adults wishing to develop their conversational skills and are particularly suited to people travelling abroad or even for parents wishing to help their children with their homework.
The class will be one hour per week for six weeks. Each six week course costs €30.

U14 Girls Championship Final: Best of luck to our U14 Girls and their management in the D2B Championship Final against Roscommon Gaels this coming Saturday 13th October. Golden Jubilee Celebrations: (3/10/62 – 3/10/12) – To mark the 50th year of St. Faithleachs GAA Club, a variety of events were held. Celebrations began on Wednesday night last with the “Unveiling of Photographs” in the Club House by Frank Byrne, captain of the 1965 senior team, Denis Dunne and Mickey Kelly. A general meeting was then held whereby, Chairman, Frank Curley welcomed everyone and secretary, Caroline Connaughton read the minutes from the 1967 Log-Book which lead to great discussions and stories from the floor of years past and the great work that has been achieved throughout. Mass of Celebration & Remembrance with Fr. Larney Shine & Fr. Ray Browne presided this meeting. Refreshments were served and special “Photo Display” on the night with many memories “Down through the Years”.
Saturday night we held a hugely successful “Reeling Back the Years” with special guest, Brian Carthy, RTE in the clubhouse. A minutes silence was observed as a mark of respect to Paddy Rogers RIP. Chairman, Frank Curley welcomed guest of honour, Brian Carthy, RTE and the large crowd for this momentous occasion. Brian Carthy expressed his privilege on his involvement with the Club’s Jubilee celebrations, congratulating the club on its achievements wishing the club the very best for the future. County Board Chairman, Mick Fahy, congratulated the club on achievements throughout the years and the great work involved with the clubs grounds and development. This was a night of interviews and chat with many stories and memories from the following: Club President, Mickey Kelly. Tom Gilroy. J.J. Cattigan. Eamon Bolger. Jim Browne. Michael Donoghue. Patsy Cox. Danny Murray. Frank Byrne, Jim & Breege Nerney, John Bill & Teresa Hanly, Henry Kenny, Derek Murray, Pat Joe Fallon, Mary Kelly, Brendan Hanly. Jack Kelly. John O’Loughlin. Michael Cleary, Johnny Horohoe. Gerry Nerney. Ollie Kelly. Raymond Cox, Martin and Gaye Skelly, were interviewed by Brian Carthy, Derek Thompson & Gerry Thompson. Songs on the night by: Willie Kelly & Frank Brennan. An exhibition of Irish dance was displayed by Maria Quigley. A presentation was made to Brian Carthy by Mary Kenny, a small token of appreciation from the club. A special word of thanks to the following: guest of honour, Brian Carthy, County Board Chairman, Mick Fahy, all who took part in the interviews, with many stories and memories of years past from senior, ladies and minor club achievements. Thanks to Danny Murray for the display of his two All-Star trophies on the night. Thanks to photographer, Oonagh Casey, Video, Declan Gilmore, Mary Flynn and James Irwin for this work on the lighting for the 50th feature cake outside our clubhouse, all those who prepared food and refreshments for the night. Thanks also to the bar staff on the night and a special word of thanks to Derek Thompson for his tremendous efforts in the organisation of these events and for his hard work throughout.
Sunday saw a festival of underage sports at the club for our U6, U8, U10, U12 and U14 members with blitz of matches, skills competitions and games followed by a disco in the clubhouse. The club would like to thank to all who joined in celebrating our Golden Jubilee throughout.
Lanesboro Pike Angling Club
The club would like to remind all fishermen that boat competition that was cancelled on the 30th Sept in Lanesboro has now been rescheduled for Sunday 14th Oct.
This is an open competition and fishing will be from 11am to 4pm. The entry fee is €30 per boat and all proceeds from this competition will be donated to the lough Ree sub aqua club.
Entries will be taken from 10.30am at Lanesboro harbour beside the duck pond. As this is a catch and release competition all boats must carry a suitable tank and fish returned safely to the water following weigh in. It is required that all anglers have club insurance. The presentation of prizes will be held in the Yacht bar.
There will be numerous cash prizes on the day and there will also be a raffle for spot prizes.
