Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Lanesboro Gathering Meeting

You are all invited to a meeting of the Lanesboro Gathering in Adie Farrell’s on this Thursday night 10th January at 8.30pm. The gathering promises to be a wonderful occasion on August Bank Holiday weekend when we will invite all the people from abroad and those that have left the parish to come back and share in a celebration of our parish.

To make this occasion massive we need the support of each and everybody in the parish, businesses, clubs and associations. We are asking as many as possible to come to this meeting on this Thursday night to start off the preparations in a major way.

Rathcline Ladies AGM

Rathcline ladies GAA club is holding its AGM in the clubhouse in Clonbonny on Sunday next at 2.30pm.

The executive would like to invite everyone with an interest in ladies football, be it as a player or supporter, to come along to the meeting. The club is a vital cog in the amenities provided for ladies and their continued growth and development is essential to give all the ladies a sporting outlet.

The Club EGM was held on Saturday night 5th Jan in the Clubhouse with a large crowd in attendance. The 2013 Executive was formed with the majority of last year’s executive reinstated in block. We wish Gerry and his selectors (still to be appointed) the very best of good luck for the coming year. Primary School Swimming

The two primary schools in Lanesboro were successfully represented at the Connacht Swimming Championships in Leisureland pool last weekend. Primary schools from across Connacht took part in this event where each swimmer could take part in two races in their age-group.  Séadhna and Dúileach Ryan sons of Seadna and Teresa Ryan, Main Street represented Lanesboro Primary School -both boys achieved first place and Gold medals in each of their chosen strokes – attaining an unprecedented 4 Connacht gold medals.  Orla Ryan, daughter of Ger and Geraldine Ryan, Blenavoher, represented Fermoyle Primary School, also doing so excellently.  Orla along with the boys achieved times that enable their qualification for the All-Ireland Schools Swimming Championships that take place in March.  With less than 1/3 of the 400 children participating in the gala succeeding in achieving the all-Ireland qualification times – this was a huge achievement.  Well done to both schools.

River Bank

The redevelopment of the river Shannon quay wall and the unstable riverbank beside the old swimming pool n Ballyleague has moved a step closer after a lot of hard work behind the scenes by the Ballyleague Village Renewal & Tidy Towns committee. As the work continues – and the committee makes plans to start the work this summer – we will be staging an important community fundraising table quiz at St. Faithleach’s GAA clubhouse on Friday week January 18th at 9pm.
We really need every house in the area and every family in the community to come out and show their support for our voluntary efforts in keeping the village tidy, helping to put up the Christmas lights every year and working on this huge new project this year by putting a team in the table quiz on Friday week. We would also invite local business or private interests to help us with spot prizes and raffle items. Hundreds of people use this riverbank for leisure walks and activities every week and we hope to display plans of the project – including details of a proposed new external fitness gym on the walls of the clubhouse for all to see on the quiz night on Friday week.” Teams of 4 (€10 per team member). For further information or to offer help please contact Chairman Gerry Thompson at 085 1740819 or e mail: keepballyleaguetidy@gmail.com or speak to any member of the committee. Shannon Gaels Minor Club

Leinster Final: We would like to extend the best of luck to our Scór na nÓg group as they travel to Finglas on Sunday next for the Leinster Scór na nÓg final. The group have performed magnificently so far and we are very confident that they will be making preparations for the All-Ireland final in Derry in February. The competition commences at 3pm at the Erins Isle club in Finglas and it a trip well worth making to see such tremendous club talent on stage.

Good luck to our club men Shane Kenny, Owen Sorohan and Jack Rooney in the Vocational Schools Leinster semi-final when they play Dublin this coming Saturday in Cashel at 1pm. We also wish St. Faithleachs player Ciaran Murtagh good luck too as he joins the lads in their quest for glory. It is also a big honour for the Lanesboro Community College to have 3 players from their school squad on the team.

The free concert on 30th December was a huge success and it was marvellous to such a big attendance enjoying a wonderful evening. Well done to all the young people who made the evening so entertaining and enjoyable. A word of thanks is extended also to the people that worked so hard behind the scenes in the catering and with the preparation of the show.

The club would like to wish everyone a very happy and successful New Year in whatever you do. As a club we would love to see more and more people becoming involved in the club. To help our young and to give so much back is very important and indeed vital towards their development. Come on board and be part of a proud club that caters for all our young people.
