Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Gathering meeting this Thursday

The Gathering 2013group continues their meeting in preparation for the welcoming home celebration of all natives of Lanesboro and Rathcline on August Bank Holiday weekend 2nd to the 5th August with another follow up meeting in Adie’s meeting room on this Thursday evening at 8.30pm. The group welcomes many and all parishioners to come along to the meeting as we put our plans for the weekend in place. We are seeking your ideas to marry into those already decided on.

Much time and energy is being put into getting a wonderful and exciting welcome home party celebration where the returning parishioners will mingle with old friends and make many new ones and really have an exciting weekend in the old homestead.

This Gathering 2013 is one not to be missed in Lanesboro Rathcline and our group invites and welcomes all those that have left the parish to return over the weekend.

Lough Ree Athletic Club AGM

The AGM of the Lough Ree Athletic club will take place this Wednesday night 23rd January in St. Mary’s Parish Hall at 9pm. The club offers so much activity to so many young athletes and they seek your support by attending the meeting. Lough Ree AC is synonymous with so many present day parents and it continues to offer the same opportunities to their children. Great fun, great sport, great activities and wonderful friends and memories are all part of Lough Ree AC. Please support the meeting as your presence will be greatly felt and appreciated.

Fair Day AGM

The Fair day AGM took place on Thursday night last in Joe and Martha Farrell’s Yacht Bar. After many years Kevin Murray called time on his tenure as chairman and the new chairman elected was Adie Farrell. Kevin Murray will long be remembered for his chairmanship of the Fair Day committee and the amazing amount of work that he has given to the fair day over his time. He must be congratulated and thanked for his wonderful time and efforts to the huge success of the fair. Along with Adie as chairman, Samantha Lulham was elected secretary and Steve Ormsby as treasurer. We wish the committee every success and look forward to another successful Fair Day on Saturday 2nd March.

Dogs Soiling the Street

Here we go again!!! More times than I care to remember I have commented time and time again about dog owners walking their dogs through the streets of Lanesboro and Ballyleague and allowing them soli the footpaths. This is greatly unfair to all the people that walk the streets and end up putting their feet into the dog soil. So many people, on a daily basis, are making comment in the shop about this dog soiling and I am appealing to all dog walkers that do not use the pooper scoopers, to pick them up free of charge, and clean up after their dogs soil the streets.

Rathcline Draw deferred until this weekend

The Rathcline GAA club is holding its annual Christmas Draw. For the club this is the most important draw of the year. The proceeds of the draw will go towards the paying of the clubs insurance and affiliation that is due at the first meeting of Longford GAA county board. Lanesboro Community Games

Hard Luck to the U15 Lanesboro Community Games Badminton team on losing out to Killoe in the County Final on Sunday last.  The team made up of Stephen O’Dowd, Aaron Farrell, Cillian Flood, Sean Maguire and Cronin Flood played very well and Stephen O’Dowd had a great win in his set 2-1 with the other players playing well throughout their matches but Killoe proved too strong to beat.  The team came away with County Silver Medals so well done to the lads for trying their very best and for getting to County Final level.

The County Finals of the Art competition took place last Saturday; Lanesboro had entries in all age groups and Succeeded in winning two medals:  Anna Peters got a silver medal in the U-14 Girls and James Gavigan got a bronze medal in the U-16 Boys.  Well done to both children and all who succeeded in getting this far.

Well done to the U-12 Chess team who recently won the county final to retain the county shield which they won last year.  They will now go though to play Meath.  The team was made up of Evan Chalmers, Séadhna and Dúileach Ryan, Orla Lyons, Aine Kennelly and Conor Sorohan.  All the team ether won or drew their individual match so it was a great win.

Best of luck to the Lanesboro Community games Badminton team on overcoming Ardagh to win a place in the County Final Vs Killoe. The team is made up of Cillian and Cronin Flood, Stephen Dowd, Sean Maguire and Aaron Farrell.

History Show on RTE

The very popular History show hosted by Myles Duncan broadcast each Sunday on Radio 1 this week included a son of Stephen Clancy, formerly of Rathcline Road. Stephen moved to Dublin many years ago but is fondly remembered for his time in Lanesboro. While listening to the show Lorcan Clancy was reporting on the voice of Abraham Lincoln having trawled the archives to find a recording of Lincoln. It is always nice to see and hear sons and daughters of former residents of our area making a name for themselves. We wish Lorcan a long and successful career in broadcasting and journalism.

Ballyleague Village renewal says Thank You

Ballyleague Village Renewal and Tidy towns committee would like to sincerely thank each and every person who turned up to support their table quiz in St. Faithleachs GAA Clubhouse last weekend. Over twenty tables were in place for the quiz which ended in great excitement with a dead heat and then two exhilarating tie-breaker questions before a winning team was finally found. Special thanks to all those who were not there but made donations, all of those who gave spot prizes for the raffle, our Quiz Master Michael Cleary and St Faithleachs GFC for hosting the event. The event offered the committee an opportunity to display the plans for the re-development of the river bank in Ballyleague which hopefully will go ahead later this year and it was great to get such positive feedback from residents in the area. Anyone who has seen the further slippage of the riverbank in the last 3 weeks will know how urgent this work is now on a very dangerous site and unstable. The presence of teams representing other community groups at the table quiz was also very welcome and the committee would like to thank the members from the following groups for coming along to show support: Lions Club Roscommon / Lanesboro Triathlon Club / Lanesboro Community College / Cloontuskert Tidy Towns / Lanesborough Ballyleague  Credit Union, Lough Ree Sub Aqua, ESB Social Club – among others. Other fundraising events will take place later in the year and your continued support for the tidy towns and village renewal committee in Ballyleague is very much appreciated. Full list of sponsors/donations: Joe and Martina Cribben – Daybreak, Michael Hanley – Builder Supplier, Bernard Keane – Supervalu, Gareth Johnson – Johnsons Pharmacy, Terry Mc Loughlin – Butcher Lanesboro, Una and Seamus Clarke – Gortgallon, Eamon Gleeson – Gleeson’s Restaurant, Gerry Reilly and Collette Conlon Ballyleague, Teresa and Steve Ormsby – Clarkes Bar, Lanesboro Angling Club, Lanesboro Tourism Co-op & Tidy Towns committee, Mary Greally & Marie Burke.
