Blood Donor Clinic

The Blood Donor Clinic will attend in Longford on this Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th February. The clinic will take place in the Longford Arms Hotel from 4.30pm to 8.00pm each day.It is essential that a large number for the area attends and help to ensure that essential blood supplies are always readily available. Your donation makes a huge contribution to the life of others as in the region of 3000 donations are needed in Ireland each week.

Gathering

A meeting of the Gathering group will meet on Thursday week 14th February in Adie Farrell’s meeting room at 8.30pm. Come along express an interest and be part of the best ‘parish hooley’ that will have taken place in Lanesboro for many a year.

We welcome and invite everyone that has ever had any connection to Lanesboro to come back to the town for the August weekend Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th August. The interest is growing at a steady pace with enquiries from all over the world and country regarding the weekend and accommodation. Don’t miss out book your holiday now.

See ALL Ireland Finalists on Sunday night

Sunday night next 17th at 7.30pm you are invited to a send-off for our Scór na nÓg sketch group who are competing in the All-Ireland final in Derry on Saturday week 23rd February. The club invites everyone to come along for a presentation of the sketch that has brought themselves and the club to the verge of All Ireland glory and give this group of excellent young people a great send off.

Defibrillator Course

We all understand the tremendous need for defibrillators and people trained in the use of them within our community. It is very vital for all clubs to have a minimum of two people competent in the use of the defibrillator.

It is proposed to have a new and recertification course in Lanesboro in the very near future. If you need to be recertified or want to do the course can you please leave your name into O’Brien’s as soon as possible.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

It is all systems go for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the committee is inviting everyone to take part in this year’s parade and to make it the biggest and best yet.  Entry fee is a mere €20 and the closing date for entry is Wednesday 6th March. All entries to be made to Freda Connaughton, Longford Road.

The parade will take place at 2.30pm from St. Faithleach’s GAA clubhouse and will make its way through Ballyleague and Lanesboro and will finish at Lanesboro Community College. There will be prizes in the category of; Best dressed window, Best club float, Best junior float, Most original float, Best business float and Overall float.

Lourdes Invalid Fund Collection

The annual church gate collection supporting the Lourdes Invalid Fund will take place at all Masses next weekend Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th February at St. Mary’s Church. Each year you are extremely substantial and we hope that you will support generously and ease the burden on bringing so many invalids to Lourdes.

Lanesboro Fair Day

The traditional horse Fair Day of Lanesboro and Dog Show has been set for Saturday 2nd March. Since its revival a number of years ago the fair day have proven to be a very successful day in the calendar of events in the town. The fair will begin at 10am in the field behind St. Mary’s Church and the dog show will take place in the field adjacent to the Yacht bar and will commence at 12.30pm. There will be kiddie’s attractions, home bakery stall, farrier, trade stands and much more to entertain everyone. Mark the date in your diary and come along for a great day at the Lanesboro Horse Fair. All enquiries to the secretary 087-9140903.

The Gathering group is seeking people with property, houses or apartments to rent in the general area over August Bank Holiday weekend. Presently there is a growing list of enquiries from local people abroad from people intending to come back for the weekend. We are currently drawing up a database of all property available and if you have property please contact Joe O’Brien, Corner Shop 3321107or joea@iol.ie with property location and description.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Kate Connaughton and her family, Weekfield, on the death of her sister Bridget Murray last week.

Rathcline Ladies GAA

Rathcline Ladies Registration for the 2013 year will take place in Clonbonny Clubhouse on Sunday next 17th February at 12.30.  Can all age groups please attend U14, U16 minors and seniors?  All new players are welcome at all age groups to attend and play with the Rathcline Ladies club.  The clothes collection will commence again and all clean unwanted clothes, footwear, duvet covers, sheets, books (not school books) are all accepted.  Contact Madaleine at 086 1500123.  Congratulations to Shane Kenny and Eoin Sorohan on making the County Minor panel.

Congratulations to the Longford Ladies Intermediate team on their win over Tipperary on Sunday last in the league.

Birth

Congratulations to Lewis and Martina Hanley, Lehery on the birth last week of a baby girl.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club

In the words of our club chairman, Sean Kenny, Saturday nights Table Quiz in the Peer Inn was a “super night” for the club. Kevin and James Hanley organised a wonderful night for the club and they must be commended for their great work. The club thanks Declan Fox for the use of his premises.

The quiz was won by the Paddy Flood team, closely followed in second place by Mary Sorohan’s team. The final round was won by the Frank Casey team. The club would like to say a huge thank you to the above teams who donated their winning prize money back to the club.

Rathcline GAA

Gaeltacht Grant Application – If your child is interested in going to the Gaeltacht this year the GAA have a grant scheme in place over the past number of years and this year the scheme will be continued.  There is the stipulation that applicants must be 13 years or older on 1st January 2013. Forms are available for download at ‘www.rathcline.gaa.ie’, Rathcline Facebook page and the Longford GAA website. Completed forms must be returned toMichael O Sullivan, Oifigeach Gaeilge agus Cultuir, Drumlish Hill, Drumlish, Co. longford or Irishculturalofficer.longford@gaa.ie on or before Friday 15th February 2013.

New Arrival – Rathcline GAA would like to congratulate Cian and Michelle O’Brien on the birth of their baby girl last week.

Club membership is open to everyone for the 2013 season. Prices are as follows: €20 for non-playing members and €50 for players. Peter Skelly will be accepting payment for all non-playing members and Ryan Fallon will be doing likewise with our Club players. Closing date for receipt of membership money is 31st March.

Club Rathcline Lotto Draw – The Jackpot total of €1,200 was not won this weekend with numbers drawn as follows: 8, 9, 12, 16, 29, and 38. Congratulations to our four €25 winners this week as follows: (1) Shane Carroll – Leixlip, Kildare; (2) Ronan Muldoon – Newtowncashel; (3) Padraig Connerton – Ennybegs, Killoe; (4) Aidan Quinn – Forgney, Ballymahon. Table Quiz – Shannon Gaels Minor Club would like to thank all who supported the table quiz on Saturday night last in the Peer Inn. Most especially we would like to thank all those who donated spot prizes and to Declan Fox who hosted the quiz on the night.

Table Quiz cancelled – Rathcline GAA Table Quiz which was due to take place this Friday night 15th February in Adie’s has been cancelled until further notice. Please keep an eye on the notes in the coming weeks for a rearranged date.

Bonus Ball Lotto Draw Reminder – The club have introduced a new €2 Lotto Draw in Adie’s Bar which complements the existing weekly lotto draw. Prize fund will be given out to the person who correctly nominates the Bonus Number on Saturday Lotto Draw. We hope people will support this initiative in the coming months.

Club Website – The new club website ‘www.rathcline.gaa.ie’ went live last week. The site is still a work in progress but we hope it will become a real connection with our community and parish. The content of the site includes everything from club news to recent announcements, fixtures, results, Club History and much more. Scór na nÓg preparations are picking up pace as we get closer to the All-Ireland Final in Derry on 23rd Feb. The general public will get one last chance to see the act in action before the final on Sunday 17th February from 7pm to 8pm in St. Mary’s Parish hall. We ask all parishioners and club members to come down on the night to support the group and give them the send-off they deserve before the All-Ireland.

Ronan Mc Cormack Memorial Cycle

Things are really falling into place in advance of the big day Saturday 2nd March. It promises to be a great event and a challenging day. The social night later in the evening in Foxes Bar, Roscommon, should also be a great occasion; you are reminded that entry registration for the cycle must be made by 15th February if you want your name included in the draw for a weekend away. Of course you can always register on the day if that suits you better. The registration fee is €25.

Places for entry into the darts competition are limited and filling fast so if you would like to participate please let Jacqui know by text at 086 1721181. Entry fee is only €5.

Sponsorship towards the day will be gratefully appreciated and a sincere thank you to everyone that has already contributed.

St. Faithleach’s GAA

Registration/Membership: 2013 Player Registration is now due – Adult players €40, Under18 players €20 and family membership €80. Registration fee must be paid before players can train or compete for the club. Please contact the clubs registrar or manager/mentors of your age group. Please also ensure that all Under18 players have mouth guards, as per new Official GAA Rule, mouth guards are mandatory.
St. Faithleachs GAA Table Quiz: Adult Table quiz takes place on Friday 22nd February in the clubhouse. Tables of four will cost €40 per table. Please support.
Senior Club Presentations: Following our table quiz on Friday 22nd February, Presentations will be made to our senior player of the year 2012 and also to our club person of the year 2012. Please come along and support.
Cards: Every Tuesday in the clubhouse at 9.00pm. All welcome. The results of last week’s games are – winners, Peggy/Phonsie, runners-up, Mark/Noreen. Last game, Tom/Padraig and ticket winners were – Padraig, Gemma, Freda and Sonny.
Sympathy: The club extends deepest sympathy to our senior club secretary, Caroline Connaughton and family on the death of Bridget Murray (nee Nolan) Weekfield.

Co Longford VEC visits Lanesboro Library

The Adult Educational Guidance Service (Co Longford VEC) will visit Lanesboro Library on Tuesday March12th from 2-4pm. If you are interested in getting back to learning and want to know what’s available locally, come and chat with Mary or Liz, both qualified guidance counsellors, who will be happy to go through your options with you. This is a free service and all are welcome!

Sympathy
