Pride in our Young People

Saturday evening last in Derry City the culmination of all the hard work done by the Shannon Gaels novelty act group came to conclusion. The team performed magnificently in the presentation of their novelty act. It is extremely rare in an All-Ireland that all players perform to their ultimate. Our members of the cast did, it was without doubt their most polished and correct presentation of the full season of Scór na nÓg.  Unfortunately for them they ran into a team representing Tipperary and Munster that were, according to the judges, just slightly ahead of them. We must congratulate the group and their mentor Maura Tobin for giving the club and parish a wonderful year and also for making history by being the first team from the club to be in an All-Ireland. We have every reason to be proud of them – their behaviour right through all competitions has been impeccable and they are an immense credit to their families, their club, their county and their province.

The novelty act team loses four of the group next year – Shane, Lauren, Laura and Andrew – due to being over age. If there are any young people looking to join the group or any of the other disciplines of Scór in the coming year please contact the club executive. If you have ability to coach Céilí Dancing or Set Dancing the club would love to hear from you. The club is also seeking young people to take part in the following Solo Singing, Instrumental music, Storytelling/Recitation, Ballad group and Question Time.

Thank You

The committee and members of the Co Longford Branch of Multiple Sclerosis would like to thank most sincerely the organisers of the Christmas Day Run/Walk from Cashel to Lanesboro, raised over €7,000 for the branch. A special word of thanks to all the participants, those who fundraised for the event and everybody who helped in any way on the day to contribute to the smooth running of this annual event. Your kindness and generosity are greatly appreciated; these funds will go a long way in helping the members of our society for the coming year.

Lough Ree AC

The new International Indoor facility at Athlone I.T. brings a new buzz to athletics in our area. On Saturday last the Connaught Region had their first squad coaching session there.

The club had Larissa Noone, Stephen O’Dowd, James Scally and Eoin Murray involved and we feel certain that all four slept well that night.

There were others invited but they had travelled to Derry with the Shannon Gaels group, competing in the All-Ireland Scor finals.

The Connaught Indoor championships will be staged at the same venue on Sunday next. The youngsters should find it an amazing experience. The club will have problems with entries as they have to be in by the time this article goes to press. In the past the club were severely out of pocket when many athletes did not travel and there is no refund.

The club’s older members were devastated to hear of the death of Brid Dunne, a former athlete with the club. The club offers its sincere sympathies to the Dunne family on their bereavement and of course also to Paul Enright. Paul was a former member of the club and if information is correct he was the first from the club to win an All-Ireland medal when under 12.

Indoor training takes place as usual on Tuesday evening at 7pm in Ballyleague Hall.

Shaping up with Bonnie

The club would like to thank Pauline Flood and Micheál Ó Suilleabhain for travelling to Derry to support the club.
