Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Gathering Meeting

A meeting of the Gathering committee will take place on Tuesday night next 21st May in Adie Farrell’s meeting room. There are many logistic decisions in relation to the Gathering Weekend on August Bank Holiday weekend to be made and we would like to ask a large representation from the community to come along and be part of a great weekend.

Lanesboro Tourism/Tidy Towns

We are at that time of year when the community is getting ready for the tidy towns competition. Judging this year will take place between 1st and 30th June.

To prepare for this there will be a major community clean up on this coming Saturday 18th May from 10 to 12noon and again from 6 to 8pm. The meeting point will be at St Marys Hall. The committee would appreciate all the support they can get and if you can spare the time, bring a paint brush, sweeping brush or even just yourself will be enough.  In the meantime there will be the weekly clean up on Monday evenings from 7 to 8pm again meeting at St Marys Hall.

The committee does appreciate all the support from the local community and hope to once again improve on last year’s marks

Dog Night

A collusion between the Rathcline Ladies and the Shannon Gaels Minor club has come up with, what promises to be, a wonderful night out at the dogs. Last year the Rathcline ladies held a wonderful night out at Longford Greyhound track and this year with the linking up of the Shannon Gaels Minor Club it promises to be a very special night. The night in question is Friday night 28th June. It is a date for your diary and one to invite all your friends to come along and support two great clubs in the area. Tickets will be on sale from this week at €10 each and we encourage everyone not only to buy a ticket but come along on the night and create a great atmosphere as well as having a great night out at the dogs. Both clubs are unique and a night at the dogs at Longford Greyhound Track is also a unique way of having a very special night out with family, friends and club mates.

End of an Era

The name Henry has been synonymous with the Cloontuskert National School and on Friday, 28th June 2013, after serving 34 years as Principal, Phelim Henry is retiring from Cloontuskert National School.  This is a momentous event, as the retirement of Phelim Henry marks the end of an era.  Cloontuskert NS has been served by a member of the Henry family since 1959.  Four years after the school opened in 1955, Phelim Henry Snr joined the school as Principal.  Upon his retirement in 1979, this role was taken over by his son, Phelim Henry Jnr.

As this is a historic event, the school wish’s to mark it with the significance it deserves.  We are currently trying to compile a book of memories to present to Mr. Henry on his retirement.  If you have any photos, or indeed any memories to relay, the committee would be very grateful if you could forward them to them.  Envelopes for this purpose are available from Trautt’s Checkout or Ballyleague Church.  Alternatively, you may email us at the following address:  phelimsfarewell@gmail.com.   Please reply before May 20th.

A celebration Mass and presentation will be held in the School at 1pm on Friday, 28th June.  There is an open invitation for everybody with links to Phelim, the school or the Abbey to attend this event and be part of the celebrations. The committee looks forward to seeing a large turnout.

Light refreshments will be served.

The night is a mock ‘Rose of Tralee with well know local faces as you will never have seen them before. Shannon Gaels Minor Club

Can we start by encouraging parents to hang around for both training sessions and matches? The greater the attendance at both training and matches encourages all the players to play at the maximum of their ability and that is something that we encourage all players to do at all times. As we all know support and encouragement and lots of it makes a younger player play and train much better. Please give your children and the club at least one hour of your time each week.

Please note the time change for training of the U6, U8 and U10 this Friday night. Training will take place from 6.45pm to 7.45pm as the Rathcline senior team will play Mostrim in the Leader Cup on Friday at 8pm. The U8 panel travelled to Kenagh last week to ply in a blitz. The weather was poor but our panel acquitted themselves very well in all their games.

Our U12 panel played in a blitz in Granard last week. They performed excellently in all their games and team management was very happy with all aspects. As I write they will travel to Ardagh tonight, Monday, for a game against the home side.

Our U14 team had a tremendous win over Dromard in the league on Tuesday night last in Clonbonny. They played in the St. Faithleach’s Paddy Bolger Memorial tournament and while they did not qualify for the play-offs they had some great games. The club would like to thank St. Faithleach’s for inviting us into the tournament and also for the manner they look after us following the games. It was greatly appreciated.

The U16 team played a much vaunted Northern Gaels side last week and after a ding dong battle we came out on the losing side by three points. The performance of the players was only mighty. They will play Ballymahon Forgney Gaels in Stonepark on this Thursday night at 7.30pm.

Our minor team is out tonight, Monday, against Colmcille and again on Sunday next in Clonbonny at 12.30pm when the play St. Dominic’s/Moydow Harpers Óg.

The club congratulates Grattan’s on the opening of their newly revamped club grounds on Sunday last. It is a credit to them and their club supporters that they have reopened a tremendous new facility.

The club would like to extend its sympathy to Sheila and Tommy Nolan and family on the death of Sheila’s mother last week.

Lough Ree Athletic Club

Athlone I.T. was the venue for the Roscommon County Championships on Saturday last.

To start, the day was anything but pleasant, luck for all, we were on our way home when the shower of hail came.

The county champions from the club for 2013 are:- Stephen O’Dowd, U16 shot, Orla Keane U13 100m, Caoimhe Flood U13 600m and Richard Prior U12 Long Jump.

Silver medals for runners up went to :-Richard Prior U12 600m, Eanna Donoghoe U14 Shot,  and long Jump, Clodagh Kiely U14 Long Jump and Hurdles while her sister collected a silver medal in the U13 Long Jump.

Bronze medals for third place went to:- Eanna Donoghoe in the U14 in the 200m and 800m, Richard Prior U12 80m, Blessing Salami Girls U14 Long Jump while Oran Walton had a treble U14 bronze in the Long Jump, 800m and Shot. Richard, Eanna and Oran are useful all-rounders and they can look forward to the pentathlon event down the line.

As all the results were not to hand as we went to press we hope that nobody’s achievements were left out.

The clubs biggest disappointment is the waste of good money on entry fees on those that did not show up – you can take a horse to water but you cannot make him drink! A different arrangement will have to be made for the Connaught Championships. Incidentally, Athlone is the venue for the U9 to U11team events for two on Saturday 8th June.

The club extends its deepest sympathy to Sheila Nolan on the recent death of her mother. May she rest in peace.

Under 12 Major League Final

Ballyboro 3     Stonepark 2 AET

Ballyboro were crowned Under 12 league champions on Friday night after coming out of an epic battle following extra time.

The game was a credit to both sides, end to end and played in the right way and spirit.

The first half was played at a terrific pace and it was amazing that there were no goals to show from either side. The Ballyboro back four of Nathan Mc Govern, Owen Diffley, Yakub Kajun and Ronan Banahan along with goalkeeper Dylan Donlon were outstanding.

Boro wee creating chances and Michael Dunne, Liam Ross and Bryn Peters all came close without scoring.

The second half started in the same vein as the first with both sides giving their all in an end to end battle. Stonepark struck first blood when a shot came back off the post before it was swept to the net on the rebound. Ballyboro piled on the pressure and only four minutes elapsed when a brilliant through ball from James Browne reached Cian O’Brien where he coolly lobbed the goalkeeper from all of 25yards. Stonepark reacted to the Ballyboro goal and it was not long before from a free kick a Stonepark player rose highest to head home the lead goal. Ballyboro kept the pressure on and Adam Hegarty and Bryn Peters brought great saves from the Stonepark goalkeeper.

The clock was tipping on and the omens were smiling on Stonepark but with four minutes to play Ballyboro grabbed a well-deserved equaliser. Ballyboro broke down the left wing where Bryn Peters put in a pin point cross meet the head of Liam Ormsby who rattled the net with a great header.

In extra time Ballyboro again piled on the pressure and as time was nearly up in the first period Ballyboro scored a goal worth winning and match and this goal was special. James Browne played a lovely through ball to Cian O’Brien who took on two defenders drawing the cover before sliding a pass to Liam Ormsby. Liam, with a bit to do, took on and beat the last defender before curling a beauty into the top corner of the net.

The second half seen Stonepark making effort to get the equaliser but Ballyboro youngsters defended stoutly to win a titanic struggle. Every credit must go to both sides for a terrific game.

The Ballyboro panel was: D. Donlon, N. Mc Govern, Y. Kajun, O. Diffley, R. Banahan, C. O’Brien, J. Browne, B. Peters, L. Ormsby, L. Ross, M. Dunne, A. Hegarty, I. Thompson, P.J. Connaughton, K. Gallagher and L. Cullen

Well done to all players and a special mention to the team management of Steve Ormsby and Steve Peters.

Rathcline GAA

Croagh Patrick Sponsorship Walk 2013 – Congratulations to all the participants who took part in this year’s Croagh Patrick walk fundraiser. The event exceeded our expectations in terms of numbers taking part in the event, the weather and the general craic involved with the challenge. The day was a huge success and a great day out was had by one and all (except for one!). The club would like to wish our chief organiser Ms. Lorraine Farrell a speedy recovery after her fall on her descent from the reek. Special thanks must go to our dedicated first aiders on the climb who looked after Lorraine in her hour of need.
