Parish Night at the Dogs
Rathcline Ladies and the Shannon Gaels Minor club has come up with, what promises to be, a wonderful night out for the parish at the dogs. Last year the Rathcline ladies, on their own, held a wonderful night out at Longford Greyhound track and this year with the linking up of the Shannon Gaels Minor Club it promises to be a very special night. The night in question is Friday night 28th June.
Both clubs are making tremendous strides in making sure that the night will be a wonderful family and parish night out. Buying tickets in itself will be marvellous but we encourage everyone to come along, fill Longford Greyhound track to the rafters and make this the most memorable and special night out for the parish and our friends.
Tickets are now on sale from at €10 each in O’Brien’s or from members of either club. This is a special night of celebrating the family importance to these clubs that has given so much fun and sport to so many young people in the parish for so many years. Both clubs aim to continue, develop and prosper and this can only be done with your continued support for both clubs and on the night at the dogs.
Siamsa
An Irish language summer course (SIAMSA) will take place on from Monday 8th July to Friday 12th July in Gaelscoil Longfoirt. The course will take place from 9.30am to 3pm each day and will cater for students from third to sixth class. Lanesboro Loses Garda Jimmy Mangan
Saturday next 1st June will bring to an end the career of local Garda Jimmy Mangan as he retires from the Garda Siochana. Jimmy came to Lanesboro Garda station on 12th August 1993 and almost 20 years later he leaves us on this Saturday. To say that Jimmy left a worthwhile and last impression on our area would be an understatement. From the outset he became an integral and very influential part of the communities both side of the bridge. Jimmy married in his time living in our community to his Garda colleague Mary and raised two sons Joseph and Colm and all are active members of the community.
We wish Jimmy the very best of good luck for his retirement and that his retirement may be long, healthy and full of happiness.
There will be a function to mark his retirement in St Faithleach’s clubhouse on this Friday night 31st May from 9.30pm.
Gerry goes back into Bar Business
We wish Gerry Kiernan, Clonfower, the very best of luck as he take over the reins once again of his bar, Kiernan’s, in Ballymahon. Gerry had leased the bar out for the past few years and now steps back into the limelight of publican when on Friday night next he once again stands behind the bar. We wish him much luck and success on his return.
Free Pre-School Year
Head Start pre-school for 2½ to 5 year olds is now taking enrolments for September 2013 and on an on-going basis for the free pre-school year and non ECCE children. For more information you are asked to contact Denise at 043 33 21321 after 1pm.
Death
The death took place at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Dunlin on Friday last 24th May of Mrs Marie Sheeran, Ballyleague. She was predeceased some seven years back by her late husband Davy. Together they came to live in Ballyleague well over 40 years ago where they also owned the Lifebelt Bar. She was one of the founding members of Lanesboro Bridge Club who celebrate 40 years and right up to her recent illness continued to playing a leading role in the club. Marie was a talented lady with her hands where she did excellent work in crafts and embroidery. She was also a keen golfer. Her passing will leave a great void in the hearts and memories of those that came to know her. The attendance at both the reposing of her remains in her residence in Ballyleague and again at her Funeral Mass in bore testimony to the esteem in which she was held. Her remains were removed from her residence on Sunday last for her Funeral Mass and she was then laid to rest alongside Davy in Cullyfad cemetery. To her family Niamh and Niall, brother, Eugene, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.
Cemetery Sunday dates announced
The dates have just been announced for the blessing of graves and mass in the three cemeteries in the parish of Rathcline. The first date is in Rathcline cemetery on Sunday 7th July, followed by Lanesboro on Sunday 14th July and finishing in Clonbonny on Sunday 21st July. People with family members interred in any of the graveyards are encouraged to tend to their family graves leading up to the dates.
Lanesboro Tourism /Tidy Towns
The weekly clean-up will continue on Monday 3rd June – Bank Holiday Monday from 7to 8pm. It is hoped that the numbers attending will continue to grow. Young people are particularly welcome.
Residents are encouraged to take an interest in their area and ensure that it is litter and wee free.
The lotto jackpot remains at €15,000 with weekly prizes of (1) €50 and (3) €20. Last week there was no winner of the jackpot and the €50 winner was €50 Tom Mullen c/o XLNTEE, and the three €25 winner were Philip Wright c/o Friday Market, Declan Mc Veigh, and Jimmy Tarmey.
Lanesboro claim 2 medals in Community Games Finals
Lanesboro had 14 children taking part in the National Finals of the Community Games and both in success and in participation they epitomised the ethos of Community Games. It is a long time since Lanesboro had medallists at Community Games national finals – but this weekend we had two. Dúileach Ryan swam the performances of his life to win his heat and his semi-final to go on and attain a gold medal in his u-10 Back-crawl Swimming event. His brother Séadhna Ryan performed beyond all expectation to also win his heat and semi-final and to win a 4th place Medal in the U-12 Freestyle Event. Also representing Longford in the swimming finals was Orla Ryan in the U-12 backstroke and the very brave young relay team made up of Orla Ryan, Rosin Brennan, Jane Dowd, Aoibhe Gettings and Caoilinn Flood, who were undaunted by the large crowd and swam excellently, enjoying the experience.
In the Project competition, Lanesboro had two teams representing the county, Conor Sorohan, Ultan O’Sullivan and Harvey Myhill were the U-11 team and Áine Kennelly and Chloe O’Brien were the U13 team, both performed well in their events.
In the contemporary Irish Dancing Aisling Farrell and Aoife Nolan performed so well in their event but missed out on a medal on this occasion.
Richard Prior was also planning to take part of the U-12 County Cross Country Mixed Distance Relay, but was un-able to attend. Longford did exceptionally well across the board at the national finals and like Lanesboro in both participation and success punched well above their weight in national finals. Well done to all the children who performed so well for their parish and county.
Lough Ree Golfing Society
The next outing of the Society is to Portumna Golf Course on Friday 31 May. The tee is booked from 11.30 am

United We Stand
A gala concert in aid of Suicide Awareness across Ireland in association with Pieta House will be held in the Hodson Bay Hotel on Wednesday 19th June. Many top country music acts will take part including Declan Nerney, John Mc Nicholl, Dominick Kirwan, Crystal Swing, Simon Casey and comedian Conal Gallen. Joan Freeman, founder of Pieta House will attend the night. Tickets cost €25 and are on sale at the hotel phone 0906 44 2000.
Rathcline GAA
Reserve League 2 – Rathcline played St. Columba’s in the semi-final of the Reserve League Two competition on Saturday night last. This game was a tight and fiercely fought contest from start to finish, so much so the game ended in a draw at full time. Extra time proved no different with Rathcline having to fight back to level the match after conceding a dubious penalty in the first half of extra time. The team showed great character and spirit to recover the deficit and finish the game on a draw. Final score: Rathcline 1-18, St. Columba’s 2-15.
Club Rathcline Lotto Draw – The jackpot total of €900 was not won this weekend with numbers drawn as follows: 10, 11, 21, 35, 37, and 42. Congratulations to our four €25 winners this week as follows: (1) Eddie Shea – Rathcline (2) Gerry Donlon – Ballyleague (3) Nicola & Barry Clarke – Gortgallon (4) Diarmuid O’ Sullivan – Lehery. Next week’s Jackpot will €1,000.
Senior League – Rathcline play Round 4 of the Senior League away to Fr. Manning Gaels on Friday 31st May in Monaduff at 8pm. This is followed by a quick turnaround time to play Dromard on the following Bank holiday Monday on 3rd June at 2:30pm.
Sympathies – The Club would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the Sheeran family, Ballyleague on the passing of Marie Sheeran and the Kelly Family, Ballyleague on the passing of Nancy at the weekend.
Extra vigilance needed – Due to the increased occurrences of robberies throughout the country, especially at GAA Clubs, we are asking all our patrons be extra careful in terms of leaving valuables in cars in the parking area during matches / training sessions.
Commiserations to Fermoyle National School 5 aside soccer team who were defeated in the All Ireland finals series which were played last Saturday afternoon in the Aviva stadium. On what was a fantastic achievement on reaching the highest level of this competition, the Club would like to congratulate the team, management and parents. A speedy recovery wish goes out to Oran Kenny who suffered a knock in the competition on Saturday.
Commiserations to Longford on losing to Wicklow in the first round of the Leinster Championship on Sunday last.
Congratulations to our neighbours – St. Faithleachs on a comprehensive win over Kilmore in the first round of their senior championship bid on Sunday afternoon in Ballyleague.
Shannon Gaels – Coaching for U6, U8, U10 and U12 will continue in Clonbonny on Friday 31st May in Clonbonny from 7pm to 8pm.
Western Gaels – Under 14 – Commiserations to our juvenile team on exiting the league campaign with a loss to Northern Gaels last Tuesday evening. The team will now begin their preparations for the first round of the championship which will take place in a couple of weeks’ time.
U16 and Minor – Games have now been suspended until after the Junior and Leaving Cert finishes next month. Our U16 team will play in the three way play off in the Shield competition for a chance to play Northern Gaels in the final. It is expected that the first of these playoff games will take place on 20th June. Training for U16 & minor continues this week per the normal routine. Players will get the usual text message in advance of training.
Exams – Finally and most importantly, the Club wishes the very best of good luck to all our student members and supporters who are preparing for the forthcoming Leaving and Junior Cert exams.
Longford Community Games 40th Anniversary
Longford Community Games will be holding a 40th Anniversary Gala Awards/Hall of Fame night in The Stag’s Head Ballinalee on June 7th. Each area has been asked to take a table and sell 15 tickets at €20 each. The night will include entertainment and a meal as well as the presentation of a “Hall of Fame” award to one recipient from each Area. Fabian Walsh will be presented with this award for the Lanesboro Parish for his long-standing commitment and help to both the Community games in Lanesboro, County and indeed at National level. If anyone would like to purchase or sponsor a ticket and join in the celebrations, they are available from any of the community games committee – Marie English, Pauline Casey, Teresa Ryan Mary Sorohan Bernie Casey and Sheila Nolan. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Lanesboro Pike Angling Club
The club held a boat fishing competition the Michael Casey Perpetual trophy on Lough Ree on Sunday last. The weather conditions were very good which led to some excellent fishing throughout the day.
The first prize of €200 and the Michael Casey Perpetual trophy was won by Martin Cusworth with a fish weighing 20lb 12oz. Second prize of €150 was won by Eithne Clyne with a fish weighing 18lb 8oz. In third place with a fish weighing 14lb 4oz was Darah Costello for which he received €75.
The club also held a draw for non-fishing members and the lucky winner of a 32” TV/DVD combi was Matthew Heneghan. There were three other draws for €25 and the winners were; Dermot Glennon, James Flynn and Martin Banahan.
The club would like to pay a special thank you to Joe and Martha Farrell for the use of their premises for the prize giving and the draw.
Shannon Gaels GAA
This time of the year, leading up to exams, is always a pressure time for our club players and their parents. We wish all our players the very best of luck in their exams.
Training will continue in Clonbonny – text messages will be sent out.
Our under 6, 8, 10 and 12 players will continue to meet and train in Clonbonny on Friday evenings from 7 to 8pm. Parents are encourage to come along to the training sessions.
Don’t forget the sponsored Greyhound Night at Longford Track on Friday 28th June. Tickets for this wonderful parish night out cost just €10. Tickets can be bought from any member of the Minor club or Ladies club.

U14 Boys: Our U14 boys were defeated by Tulsk last week. Next game is against St. Aidans, in Ballyforan, this coming Thursday 30th May at 7.00pm
U12 Boys – Spring League: Our U12 boys had a win over St. Croan’s on Friday evening last in Enfield. Final score – St. Faithleachs 9-07 St. Croan’s 5-07.
U12 Girls: Our U12 girls play against St. Marys in the Div. 2 quarter-final this coming Wednesday 29th May in Ballyleague at 7.00pm.
U8/U10 Go Games Blitzes: Our U10’s participate in the Go Games blitz this coming Saturday 1st June in Kilbride at 11.00am – Group 3 (St. Faithleachs, Kilbride, Castlerea St. Kevin’s & St. Aidans).
St. Faithleachs GAA Cúl Camp 2013: Registration night for our GAA 2013, takes place this Saturday evening 1st June in the clubhouse from 8.00 to 9.00pm. Cúl Camp takes place from Monday 15th July to Friday 19th July (10.00am to 2.30pm). Application forms available through local schools or at St. Faithleachs GAA clubhouse or at training sessions. Cúl Camp for children aged 5/13yrs. Charge: €35 per child. (Reduced rates for family)
Lotto: The numbers drawn were – 16, 18, 21 and 25. There no jackpot winner and the five €20 winners were – Annie Trautt, Anna Egan, Tom Ryan, Imelda Fallon & Dillon Casey. The next draw will take place on Tuesday 4th June for a jackpot of €8,700.
