Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

All set for the Night at the Dogs

All work in preparation for the Rathcline Ladies and Shannon Gaels Minor club’s ‘night at the dogs’ on Friday night 28th June is almost complete. Tickets sales are very good and we would encourage everyone to purchase a ticket and come along to the dogs. There is nothing better than a local community night; it is a wonderful social evening especially to be in the company of fellow parishioners and friends. A night at Longford Greyhound Track takes 2½ hours out of your evening and it is filled with thrills and spills. The first race starts at 8pm and both clubs look forward to seeing you all there. Tickets are on sale at €10 and this is wonderful value for a great night out

Both clubs are extremely grateful to all the support they have received so far in the form of sponsorship be it race sponsors or the business card sponsorship. It is truly amazing the response from everyone especially at these trying times for all businesses.

If you would like to be part of the night either through sponsorship or by just buying tickets for the night you can contact Madeleine Murray, Sean Kenny, Michael Greene, Brendan Keane, Seadna Ryan or O’Brien’s Corner shop.

Lough Ree Golfing Society

The second outing of 2013 was to the beautiful woodland course of Portumna, Co Galway. We had a lovely dry day with some sunshine on this exquisite parkland course with its great trees, deer, excellent dry fairways and greens. A very enjoyable day was had by all.

The results were as follows: nearest the pin on the long par 3, 18th hole was Alan Farrell; front nine was won by Martin Gillen and the back nine by Colm Dardis. 3rd was Liam Rosemond with 32 points second Fiona Gillen on an excellent 34 points. The winner was Brendan Whitty with a very good 37 points on this very testing course. More remarkable was that Brendan was not sure at the start whether he would be able to complete the round owing to a very painful back but as the old saying goes: “beware the injured player” and Brendan proved it correct with a brave win. Well done to all. The next outing for the society is to lovely Moate on Saturday 29th June and the tee is booked from 11 am. It is hoped to see a big turnout on this great course.

Lough Ree AC

Last weekend was a very busy one for some young athletes. On, Saturday the Co. Roscommon Community games finals were held in Ballyleague (St. Faithleach’s

grounds) while the Connaught u/9 to u/12 were on in Athlone, followed by the Co. Longford Community Games finals in Ballymahon on Sunday.

Turbo Javelin:- the events in Athlone for the younger age groups are team events (team of two). Each county can qualify three teams in each event. At this level of competition the club was not hopeful about the Track events and concentrated on the Throwing events as our u/10 girls “clicked” in Galway last year winning gold. Now our U11’s became our main focus. At the Roscommon Championships, they won two of the three places, so we went to Athlone with two teams, all good athletes, but inconsistent! The final result was: – 1st Swinford A.C, 2nd Róisin Brennan and Alannah Flood (Lough Ree) and 3rd Soula Beloite and Rachel Donlon (Lough Ree). Indeed the diminutive Rachel would pass as an U9. Four Connaught medals for the club and these young ladies to be proud off. Training for this event brought the talented Victoria to our attention. She is U10 and when Sionna Crossan also

U10 came to prominence, we had a pair -Surprise, surprise, this duo won bronze medals from the best in the west. Victoria Jedrych had the second best throw in her event as did Róisin Brennan in the U11 age group.

The Longford Community Games Finals took place in Ballymahon on Sunday before large crowds. Congratulations to all who won medals and indeed to everyone who took part, after all, it’s representing your parish that’s important.

Next week’s Jackpot will €200.

Senior League – Our senior team were defeated by table toppers St. Columba’s on Friday night in Clonbonny on a final score: Rathcline 3-06, St. Columba’s 3-16. After starting promisingly, Rathcline lost their way for the last 15 mins of the first half allowing the north Longford men to build up a substantial lead by half time. Rathcline came out all guns blazing in the second half and scored two fantastic goals to close the gap to four points on the visitors. But it was a case of too little too late and St Columba’s closed out the game the stronger. The senior league continues next Friday night 14th June when Rathcline play away to Colmcille in Fr. McGee Park at 8pm.

Reserve League 2 Semi Final – Congratulations to our Intermediate league team who had a hard fought win over St. Columba’s in Clonbonny on Sunday. Great credit must go to Joe Rooney who consistently manages to get the best out of the lads at this level. The team will now contest the final against Ballymahon for the second year in a row. Date, time and venue have yet to be clarified. Final score in the semi-final: Rathcline 1-08, St. Columba’s 1-07.

Club Fundraising – In the last decade, there has been a huge amount of work completed in Clonbonny. No one will argue that we have one of the finest GAA facilities in the midlands with a fantastic new All Weather Pitch with a state of the art Clubhouse. With such facilities, comes a cost and the cost on our club is roughly €20,000 a year for the next six years. At this time of the year, Rathcline GAA normally makes plans in developing a fundraiser which will service our annual debt of our club to our local Credit Union. Last year, we asked our parishioners to subscribe to new annualised lotto format. This venture was hugely successful in so far as the Club fulfilled its commitments to our Credit Union as well as giving out nearly €10,000 in prize money over the 12 month fundraising term. This year, it has been agreed to copy the template/initiative of other clubs around the midlands where €100 donations from patrons will go directly to our club needs. It is seen as a hugely efficient way of meeting club targets where 100% of every €100 donation will go to clearing the club debt for the year. Rathcline GAA is looking for at least 200 people in the parish to join in this venture to fulfil the loan requirements. Fermoyle National School lead the way with the first donation of the campaign and we hope that the rest our parishioners, patrons, members and supporters can do their best for our club in similar fashion. Recognition for such donations has yet to be finalised by the financial committee but any help will not go unnoticed. Members of our financial committee will be in contact with households in the parish in the coming weeks. Rathcline GAA is the heart of the community and our parishioners have always delivered for our club. We have no doubt that this venture will be a huge success.

Shannon Gaels – Coaching for U6, U8, U10 and U12 will continue in Clonbonny on Friday in Clonbonny from 7pm to 8pm.

Western Gaels – U14 – As well as preparations on-going for the first round of the Championship in a couple of weeks’ time, our Under 14 team have now entered the Feile competition which will take place on the 29th July.  To this end, training will continue every Thursday and Saturday per the normal regime.
