Sympathy

Rathcline Cemetery
This coming Sunday at the grave blessing and mass in Rathcline cemetery the committee will be holding a collection. The collection is help in maintaining the present work being done in the graveyard.
With Rathcline being the first cemetery for Mass and the blessing of graves the committee would ask everybody to tend to their family graves during this week.
Lanesboro National Series Sprint Triathlon 2013:
The ‘Audi Athlone Two Provinces’ National Series Sprint Triathlon will take place in Lanesboro and it is a tremendous honour for the local Lanesboro Triathlon club to be hosting such a prestigious event. Saturday week 13th July is fast approaching and work is continuing apace to ensure that everything for this huge event.
Not only will there be the full event but there will also be a kid’s race on the Saturday morning consisting of a 100m swim, 2km cycle and 1km run. The race is open to children from 8-15 years of age. It promises to be a fun-filled day with goodie bags, medals and treats for all who take part. Cemetery Sunday
As usual Rathcline cemetery is first on Sunday next 7th July, followed by Lanesboro on Sunday 14th July and concluding in Clonbonny on Sunday 21st July. People with family members interred in any of the graveyards are encouraged to tend to their family graves in time for the blessing of the graves and Mass. The blessing of the graves will commence at 6pm at each cemetery.
Farewell Mass this Friday
Everybody is invited to a farewell Mass for Fr. Ray Browne in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague on this Friday 5th July at 7pm. Fr Ray will be soon leaving to take up his post as Bishop of Kerry. The Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Christopher Jones, Bishop of Elphin. Afterwards there will be refreshments served in Ballyleague Hall.
Lanesboro Triathlon Club
Congratulations to Marie and Naoise Sudway on their recent performances in the Mullaghmore National Series Sprint Triathlon. Marie Sudway won her age group, while Naoise won the junior section and also won the Carl O’Reilly memorial trophy for the fastest junior swimmer. Well done also to all club members who took part in the Flatline Athlone Mile swim on Saturday evening last, and especially to Marie Keane who won her age category. A super week end of results for Lanesboro Tri Club!! Best to luck to all club members heading to Kilkee this coming week end for the ‘Hell of the West’ triathlon hosted by Limerick triathlon club.
Sponsored Swim: The Lanesboro Triathlon club is currently organising a sponsored swim in aid of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. The swim shall take place on the August Bank Holiday week end – date to be confirmed. The charity we have selected is Cystic Fibrosis Ireland; an organisation which does fantastic work on behalf of people with CF in Ireland. Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the Trautt family, Cloontuskert on the death of the late Paddy Trautt’s brother Sonny in Ardagh last week.
Ladies Day begins 2-day Race Meeting
For local people there is no better social event and evening out than spending times with family and friends at the Roscommon Races – our local racecourse. The biggest and most glamorous day of the year will take place at Roscommon Races on Monday evening next 8th July where it is the annual dedicated Ladies Day. Glamour and style is always the order of the day when the ladies dress in all their finery for this day especially for the ladies. There will be a sponsored Best Dressed Ladies competition with the winner winning a €1500 shopping spree with Littlewoods Ireland while 9 finalists will receive a €100 Littlewoods Ireland shopping spree. The judge on the evening will be journalist and RTÉ presenter, Maura Derrane. With the weather forecast for next weekend and the early days of the following week promised to be excellent there is no excuse for the ladies not to be at the races in all their beauty and soak up the sun rays as well as the atmosphere of the evening.
The first race on Ladies Day will be at 5.40 with the feature race being the Lenebane Stakes – a listed race –with €40,000 in prize money.
Monday night can run long into the night when the race dance will take place in the Abbey Hotel with the huge popular Patrick Feeney.
On Tuesday evening 9th July the track will put on an excellent race meeting of top class National Hunt racing. National Hunt racing is the life and soul of racing in Ireland and there is no doubt that the racing on Tuesday will lead to top class racing and wonderful enjoyment with many thrills and spills over the hurdles and fences. The first race on Tuesday will take place at 5.55pm and it is a meeting not to be missed.
Lough Ree Golfing Society
On Saturday 29th June the Lough Ree Golfing Society held their 3rd outing of 2013 at Moate Golf Club. A splendid day was had by all at this lovely woodland course. There was a good turnout and it was great to meet again old and new members.
The results were as follows: nearest the pin on the 4th: Robin Lane; front nine with 22 points was Hugh Devereaux; back nine on 17 points was Peter Day; 2nd was Liam Rosemond on 34 and 3rd was Ray McCormack also with 34 points. The first prize went to John Martin who had a good score of 35 stableford points.
The next outing is to Longford Golf Club and the date will be announced in next week’s notes
Sub Aqua Club celebrates
There are very few groups in our community that does as much great work in the protection and saving of lives than Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club and deserve so much of our support. Since its formation in 1983 the club has proved to be a most vital cog in search and rescue throughout the midlands and further afield. There are multitudes that have to be grateful to Lough Ree Sub Aqua club for the outstanding work they do in search and rescue.
Last year the club suffered a massive loss when a fire broke out in its clubhouse causing tremendous damage to their boats, their equipment van, oxygen tanks and compression pumps for the refilling of oxygen tanks. All in all over €100,000 of damaged was done by the fire.
Less than one year on the club has made a remarkable recovery and on Sunday 7th July the club will celebrate the reopening of their club house and the blessing of the boats. Not only are they celebrating the reopening but they also celebrate 30years of their existence since that famous and wonderful day back in 1983. The official opening ceremony will take place at 3pm.
The club will host a family fun day and barbeque with musical entertainment and boat trips in the car park along the banks of the Shannon. The club invites you all to come along for what promises to be a wonderful occasion for their double celebration.
Rathcline Ladies
Our night at the dogs in conjunction with the Shannon Gaels Minor club proved to be an outstanding success. The club is extremely grateful to everyone that bought tickets and supported the night. The atmosphere on a bright and beautiful Friday evening was tremendous and we would like to thank Martin Tucker and the committee of Longford Greyhound Stadium for making us so welcome. Our sponsors and there were many were very receptive when we approached them for support and without them this night would not have been possible and to them we say a huge thank you.
As you read these notes our U14 team will have played Grattens in the championship final in Killashee on Monday. We hope to be reporting on the first silverware for the club in next week’s notes.
On Thursday night next our Under 16 team will play Carrickedmond in the Championship final. As of yet the venue and time is not available. See O’Brien’s window for notice of both. Good luck to the team management and players and hopefully it will be a great night for the girls.
The senior ladies are training hard for their first round of the championship that comes up on Sunday week 14th July in Carrickedmond where they will take on the home side.
Well done to the Reserve League team and their manager Joe Rooney on a great win over Ballymahon in their final last Saturday.
Sponsored Swim for Cystic Fibrosis
Lanesboro Triathlon club are in the process of organising a sponsored swim from Kilnacarrow (Bord na Mona) bridge to Lanesboro on August Bank Holiday weekend – most probably Sunday 4th or Monday 5th August in the afternoon in aid of Cystic Fibrosis. The date details will be confirmed in the very near future.
The club is seeking volunteer swimmers to join with them on the swim. If you are interested please contact sponsoredswim@trilanesboro.com. This will be a wonderful and new challenge for swimmers but most definitely an excellent cause will benefit to a major extent.

Co Longford VEC visits Lanesboro Library – The Adult Educational Guidance Service (Co Longford VEC) will visit Lanesboro Library on Tuesday July 16th from 2-4pm. If you are interested in getting back to learning and want to know what’s available locally, come and chat with Mary or Liz, both qualified guidance counsellors, who will be happy to go through your options with you. This is a free service and all are welcome
Shannon Gaels
The ‘night at the dogs’ jointly held with the Ladies on Friday night last was an outstanding success. A huge number from the parish and surrounds travelled to Longford Greyhound track on a beautiful warm summer evening. It was wonderful to see so many people in attendance and the club is extremely grateful to all sponsors and purchasers of tickets for making the night so special.
Our U14 team travelled to Dunderry, Co. Meath last Saturday for a Leinster Blitz. It was a terrific day for the club and out lads acquitted themselves brilliantly. They played out of their skin in the three games winning two and just being caught on the line in the third for a draw game. They received a beautiful trophy for their great performances. Well done to joint managers Wayne O’Donoghue and Sean Kenny and the panel on an outstanding day for the club. The club would like to thank the Dunderry club for their hospitality and also a special word of thanks to our bus driver Jimmy Brennan.
The Under 16 team overcame Drumlish in the Shield semi-final on Thursday last. They will now travel to the Laurels, Mullinalaghta on this coming Saturday for the final against Northern Gaels. We wish the panel and mentors the very best of luck. On Tuesday next the team will travel for a league game to Killoe to play Killoe Emmets at 7.30pm.
Our Under 12 team will play Killoe Emmets in Clonbonny on this Thursday evening at 7pm.
Training for Under 6, 8, 190 and 12 takes place in Clonbonny every Friday evening from 7 to 8pm.
Under 14 training in Clonbonny on Thursday from 8to 9pm and again on Saturday at 5pm.
The minors have a fixture this Monday against Kenagh/Moydow and on Monday week they will travel to Drumlish to play Drumlish at 7.30pm.
The club would like to sympathise with Michael Costello, his sisters Collette and Loretta and the Murtagh family, Clonmee on the death last week of Geraldine Mc Manus, nee Murtagh.
Congratulations to the Reserve League 2 panel under the expert stewardship of Joe Rooney and selectors who retained the Reserve League title on Saturday evening last in Cashel when they overcame Ballymahon a thrilling encounter.
Annual One Day Retreat
The annual one day retreat to Lough Derg will take place on Sunday 25th August leaving Ballyleague Hall at 7am. Last year there was a great demand for this annual one day retreat and early bookings are advisable. The bus will pick up pilgrims at Scramogue, Rooskey and Carrick-on-Shannon. The cost of entry to the island is €40 and the bus fare is extra. For bookings and further details you are asked to contact Mary at 043-33 21969.
Siamsa
An Irish language summer course (SIAMSA) will take place on from Monday next 8th July to Friday 12th July in Gaelscoil Longfoirt. The course will take place from 9.30am to 3pm each day and will cater for students from third to sixth class. Free Pre-School Year

Lanesboro Ballyleague Credit Union Car Draw
The Lanesboro Ballyleague Credit Union held their Car Draw at their offices on Friday evening last at 8pm. The first prize of a Hyundai 120 car was won by James Nerney, Curraghroe, 2nd prize of €1000 was won by Noel Collins, Kilrooskey, 3rd prize €500 was won by Siobhan Casey, Elfeet, Newtowncashel, 4th prize €200 went to Sinead Connaughton, Ballyclare Court, 5th prize €200 went to Gillian Clyne, Rathcline Road, 6th prize €200 was won by Thomas Riozzi, 7th prize €200 Kevin Kiernan, Gurteengar and the 8th and final prize was won by Denis Crinigan, Gurteengar.

Lough Ree AC
The All-Ireland for U9 to U11 age groups took place on Saturday last at Finn Valley Athletic Sports Complex in Stranolar, Co. Donegal. One wondered why was not in a more central location? When you see the fine facilities – a tartan track, large Hall, restaurant and a new swimming pool about to be opened you do not begrudge them their ‘day in the sun’.
With a 10.30 am start, it necessitated travelling on Friday to Letterkenny, not that the young qualifiers complained. They were not particularly interested in Yeats grave on the way but found Glencar waterfall on the way home more to their liking. There, they bumped into club-mate Ella Hogan and her family. Indeed her uncle Barry set his own record when he was a member of the club many moons ago.
Lough Ree qualified three pairs, all in the Turbo Javelin- a new event, replacing the ball throw. They travelled more in hope than in expectation – hoping the Munster clubs might not travel the long distance. The made the journey alright as Bandon AC was amongst the winners.
As to our own six competitors, one was lost to holidays, but there was some success. Victoria Jedrych had a personal best throw of 13.29m in the U10 age group from about 20 competitors, from the four provinces on four bettered her throw, no doubt the “star of the day”. Róisin Farrell had only one throw recorded 12.71m in the U11 age group. When she enquired afterwards as to the difference between a foul throw and a break, we asked ourselves was coaching adequate? Alannah, Caoilinn and Rachel did well and performed to their capabilities. We know they enjoyed the weekend and hope the parents who travelled did likewise. Bring on 2014
Rathcline GAA
Reserve League 2 – Pride of our parish this week undoubtedly lies with our Reserve League team who were crowned Intermediate League Champions on Saturday evening in Cashel with a thrilling win over Ballymahon. This is the second year in a row where Joe Rooney has cast his midas touch in this competition and indeed it is worth noting that Rathcline have won this competition in three of the last four years under Joe’s stewardship. This year’s win was even more special as the team had titanic battles the whole way through the group stages as well as the famous semi-final replay win over St. Columba’s. It was a pleasing sight to see Anthony Farrell being presented with the competition trophy. The club can now look forward to the first round of the Intermediate Championship with th-e first season goal achieved. Congratulations to all involved. Final Score: Rathcline 4-08, Ballymahon 3-08. Rathcline GAA would like to congratulate Longford Senior team on a good win over Limerick their 1st round qualifier game on Saturday evening last in Pearse Park. Final Score: Longford 2-14, Limerick 0-09.
Galway Races – The inaugural Rathcline GAA Race day will take place at the Galway Races on Monday 29th July. The club hope to replicate the success of that achieved by Longford County Board at Punchestown only on a much smaller scale which will satisfy the needs of our own club. The occasion will present our parishioners, members, supporters and friends a fantastic afternoon of horse racing on opening day of the 2013 festival. The club have agreed an attractive hospitality package with the organisers in Ballybrit which surpasses that seen at the Annual Punchestown County Board Fundraiser. Most people will be familiar with the Galway Races but for those who are not; a great day out is always guaranteed. Ballybrit at the end of July is always the highlight of the horse racing calendar in Ireland and it is the aim of Rathcline GAA to tap into the atmosphere, banter and craic to serve our own needs as well as giving something back to our supporters. Club Rathcline Lotto Draw – The jackpot total of €400 was not won this weekend with numbers drawn as follows: 12, 17, 19, 22, 28, and 43. Shannon Gaels – Coaching for U6, U8, U10 and U12 will continue in Clonbonny on Friday in Clonbonny from 7pm to 8pm as normal. All parents are asked to return ticket money from the Dog night to the club as soon as possible.
Western Gaels – U14 – All roads led to Dunderry in Co. Meath on Saturday last for the Leinster Féile competition. The team under the management of Wayne Donoghue and Sean Kenny performed exceptionally well, winning two of their games and drawing the last one. The results combined meant that the team were joint top group winners. Preparations are now in full swing for the first round of the championship which is scheduled to kick off in mid-July. Training continues in Clonbonny on this Thursday evening coming between 8pm -9pm.
U16 – Congratulations to our U16 team who recorded a fantastic win over St. Vincent’s in the semi-final of the Juvenile Shield in Dunbeggan on Thursday evening last. The team will now meet Northern Gaels in the Shield Final which is scheduled to take place on Thursday 11th July 2013 in the Laurels at 7:30pm. Before then, Round 2 of the Special Juvenile League Division 1 will take place on Tuesday evening coming 02nd July when Western Gaels play Killoe Óg away in Emmet Park at 7:30pm. Round 3 will take place a week later on 9th July playing at home in Clonbonny to St. Vincent’s. The first round of the championship is due to take place on 15th August with an away match to St. Colmcilles. Well done to management of Cathal Chapman, Padraig Kenny, Mick Shorthall, John Moran and Cathal Twaddle on their great work to date.
Minor – Round 3 of the Minor League recommences on Monday evening 1st July when Western Gaels face St. Dominic’s/Moydow Harpers in Dunbeggan at 7:30pm. Round 4 is scheduled for Monday 8th July when Western Gaels will play away to St. Vincent’s in Monaduff at 7:30pm. Training for U16 & minor continues this week per the normal routine. The frequency of the training campaign will pick up in the next week or so in advance of the first round of the championship in both age groups. Now that the exams are completed, we need to get all players back out on the pitch as soon as possible. Players will get the usual text message in advance of training.
Dog night for Minor and Ladies Club – Shannon Gaels and Rathcline Ladies would like to thank everyone who supported the fundraiser on Friday night last. A great night was had by all.

U12 Boys – Spring League: Our U12 boys had a win over Roscommon Gaels on Wednesday evening last in Ballyleague. The final score was – St. Faithleachs 11-12 Roscommon Gaels 2-08. Well done to the panel of players and management as they travelled to Ballintubber on Saturday to participate in a blitz.
U10 County Go-Games Blitz: The County U10 Blitz was held in St. Faithleachs GAA Club Grounds on Saturday last. Well done to all teams from throughout the County who took part. Many thanks to all involved in preparation for this event including the field committee and all who helped out on the day.
