Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club is holding FREE TRY A DIVE in Longford swimming pool at 9pm every Thursday night for the next number of weeks continuing on this Thursday night 20th October.
You will learn how to use scuba equipment in shallow water and get a quick and easy introduction to what it takes to explore the underwater world.
Learn what wearing scuba equipment feels like and how easy it is to move around underwater while wearing it.
Find out what it’s like to breathe underwater and learn whether you can be comfortable there.
All the equipment you will need is provided on the night just bring yourself, togs and swim hat and you’re ready to go.

Former resident passes away
It was with the greatest of sadness we learned of the death at Cavan General Hospital on Wednesday 12th October of Martina Flaherty, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan. Martina, formerly Gearty from the Green was predeceased by her parents Mick and Thelma and her husband Padraig Flaherty. Growing up Martina was a vivacious young lady who had the warm and cheery greeting to everyone she met. She will be long remembers for her great personality and wonderful smile. Her passing came much too soon for this fine lady and all we are left with are fond memories of Martina. To her daughter Fiona and Fiona’s husband Steve and their grandchildren, her partner Hugh, sister Jackie, brothers Mickie, Ian and Jody relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy
Train how to use the Defibrillator
Defibrillators are devices that send an electric pulse or shock to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat. They are used to prevent or correct an arrhythmia, an uneven heartbeat that is too slow or too fast. If the heart suddenly stops, defibrillators can also help it beat again. That is the very reason that we need more and more people trained up in the use of this vital life saving device. The local defibrillator group is actively seeking new people in the Kilgefin, Ballyleague, Cashel, Killashee and Rathcline Lanesboro areas to become competent in the use of the Defibrillator. The group is also looking to retrain and refresh those that have already completed the course and need to brush up on its use.

Defibrillator Funding – Thank You
The Defibrillator Group would like to sincerely thank everyone that has contributed so generously to the appeal for funding to replace batteries and pads and the constant need to upgrade all the defibrillators.
The importance of defibrillators in the general area cannot be overstated. The lives it can save and has saved in recent times are well documented.

Halloween Tractor Run
A Halloween Tractor Run in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital will take place on Sunday week 30th October. The registration centre will be The Local, Newtowncashelfrom 3pm. The tractors will leave Newtowncashel at 4pm. The entry fee is €20 per tractor.
With a Kids Halloween Disco
As part of the day’s celebration there will be a Kids Halloween Disco with free face painting, nibbles, music and fun in the Pier Inn from 5pm to 7pm.
And it does not finish there Following the earlier events the evening will draw to close with a Fancy Dress Night.

Boat Trips
Lough Ree Access for all boat is a boat built for you is offering three sailing trips a day 10am, 12 noon and 2.30pm. This is a great trip of fascination onto Lough Ree and its famous islands.
Former resident returns
It is great to see local people still coming back to their old stomping ground. The most recent visitor was Pat Fallon and his wife Noreen from Wexford. Pat was born and raised in Cloontuskert and it was great to meet and chat with himself and Noreen during their visit.
Tractor and Car Drive
The annual big Tractor and Car drive will take place on Sunday October 23rd from Church St. Strokestown. The Drive is being organised by Mid-Roscommon Vintage Club and the funds raised are in aid of the Kilglass-based Sick Children’s Fund. Entry fee is €20 per vehicle and registration will take place from 10:30am. The classic/vintage car run will take the following route; Depart from Church St at 12 noon, and proceed to Longford by-pass, and take the N4 westbound towards Newtownforbes, continue to Rooskey and take the R371 for Strokestown via Scramogue.
The tractor run, which will leave immediately after the cars will take the following route; proceed to the R368 to Sharkey’s cross, take L1424 to Lismehy and L1425 to Tuam Cross, take left at Tuam on New Line to N63 via Kilnalosset Cross. On N61 it will proceed to Lanesboro and take right on Rathcline Rd. The route will then take a circle to Ballymahon road via Newtowncashel road and return to Lanesboro. It will return to Strokestown via Curraghroe and Scramogue Cross. Vintage tractors are welcome to take part and their route is a shorter distance; proceed to Ballybeg via Sharkey’s cross and Lismehy after a short rest they will return on same route. Marshalls will be on duty at all junctions to direct the tractors. Refreshments will be served in the morning and a raffle will take place later that night in Compton’s Central Bar where generous prizes are to be won. Please support this very worthy cause.
Final Outing of the Year
The Lough Ree Golfing Society will hold its final outing to Strokestown Golf this coming
Friday 21st October with the tee time at 11am. There are four currently in the running for Golfer of the Year and Friday should be intriguing.
All golfers in the locality are invited to go along and join in the day’s event.
Ballyleague Bingo
Ballyleague Bingo continues in Ballyleague Hall every Thursday night. The first numbers will be called at 8.30pm.

50/50
Congratulations to Peter Mullooly, Tullyvrane, who was last week’s winner of the Rathcline 50/50. Peter won the top prize of €426. The draw took place in the Clarke’s Bar.

The second last of the October schedule for the Roscommon group of Parishes for the month of October takes place on Sunday next 23rd with the Service of Holy Communion in St. John’s Church, Lanesboro at 11.30am and the final Service of the month on Sunday 30th October Service in St. Coman’s Church Roscommon at 11.30am
Tidy Towns Lottery
On Tuesday 11th October the jackpot for the Lanesboro Tidy Towns lottery stood at €10,300 and as it was not won the jackpot rose to €10,400 for the draw on Tuesday 18th October. The winning numbers drawn on the 4th October were 13, 14, 17 and 20. The winner of the €50 prize was Chicken c/o Mags, and the three €20 winners were Bríd Mc Dermott, Cathal & Aoife McHugh, c/o Mags and Alan Farrell c/o Yacht Bar.
The funds raised from the lottery is providing the financial support to do lots of planting around the town where the most recent is the ongoing creation of the orchard and the shrubs and roses planted on the recently renovated footpaths around the corner on the Longford Road and the flowers on the Ballymahon Road. Your continued support is enabling all the ongoing work and we encourage greater support for funding of these and other upcoming projects.

CD continues to sell well
Frank Nelson has just released a new CD called ‘I’ll Put the Kettle On’. Frank has been very active on the music scene for over 30 years and the quality of his music and dances/shows is testimony to the reason he has been so popular. Frank is inexhaustible when it comes to releasing high quality CD’s.
This time he has really hit the high times with the quality and songs included. It is a must for followers of Frank and lovers of country music.

Dinner Dance
The Longford Pioneer Total Abstinence Association, Longford branch will hold their annual Dinner Dance on the Rustic Inn, Abbeyshrule on Friday next 14th October. The music will be provided by the very popular J&S Sound. Dinner will be served at 9pm and there will be a lot of spot prizes won on the night. Tickets cost €30 and can be bought from Breda Moran or O’Brien’s shop.
Traditionally this is the night out of the year where a great night out is assured.
Congratulations
Many congratulations to Evan Chalmers son of Robbie and Geraldine Chalmers and his Ballymahon teammates on winning the Longford Intermediate Championship. They now go on to meet Louth Champions Cooley Kickhams in the first round of the Leinster Championship.
Sunday Night Card Game
The results of the Sunday night card game held in the Parish Hall are:: 1st Annie & Kathleen. There was a six way tie for second with Peggy Moran & Petey Donlon emerging winners. Last game winners were Pat & Geraldine Greene. Raffle winners were Bridie Glennon, Pat Joe Fallon, Jack Bannon & Michael Finnan. Game every Sunday night with light refreshments served.

Ballyboro FC
The under 16 team qualified for the third round of the Connacht Cup when they got the better of East Galway United by two goals to nil. A resolute defence allied to a hard working yet creative midfield and a goal each for the twin strike force of Wesley Hughes and Ben Murphy saw the team safely through to the next round. It was a game of contrasting halves for the under 13s in their game with Gaels United. The first half was dominated by the Drumlish boys and this was reflected in a half time scoreline of 6-1in their favour. However the second period was very different as the Ballyboro boys displaying grit and determination dominated for long periods before succumbing on a 6-3 scoreline, Ballyboro: Stephen Farrell, Ethan Carberry, Jack Cassidy, Hayden Smyth, Cathal Hanley, Alfie Murphy, Shane Farrell, Tim Kenny, Kyle Rice, Charlie Moynihan, Oisín Dillon(3). The combined under 10 Lions and Tigers teams recorded a comfortable win over UCL. There was plenty of attacking football played by both teams. New signing Patrice with a clinical finish scored the winning goal for Ballyboro in a closely contested Combined Counties encounter with Longford Rovers. The game finished 3-2 in Ballyboro’s favour with Jordan Donlon helping himself to a brace. The under 8s participated in a very enjoyable blitz along with Melview and Inny Rovers. Tomas Kenny, Kyle Carberry, James Fallon, Aaron, Raftery, Caoimhe Loughlin, Luke Hassett, Lorcan O’Reilly, Philip Kucier, Eoin Farrell, Pat Glynn, Tom Glynn, Leo Donnellan, Tadhg Rowan, Tiernan Hanley, and Robin Donnellan all displayed great enthusiasm and no little skill.
The under 14 girls were just edged out by a 2-1 margin by Kenagh United. This was a game that could have gone either way as both teams displayed great endeavour and some very skilful touches. Fixtures: On Saturday the under 9s will be involved in a blitz in the Mall, starting at 10am, along with Melview and UCL Harps. The under 11s play UCL Stormers at home on Saturday, 12.30pm kick off. Also on Saturday the under 12 girls are away to Killoe Celtic, 10am start. On Sunday the under 12s are away to Newtown Blues, 1pm kick off 1pm start. The under 14s play Spartac Granard at home at 11.30am on Sunday.

Local Connection
Ballymahon winners of the Longford Intermediate Championship return to the field for the first round of the Leinster Championship when they play Cooley Kickhams of Louth in Pearse Park on Saturday next at 2pm.
Featuring on the Cooley Kickhams side will be Conor and Aoghan McGuiness and Cian Connor. Conor and Aoghan are stepsons of Albert Fayne, formerly of Aughakeel where his brother Paddy resides on the family farm and Cian is a step grandson. Albert along with his brother Brendan are amongst a select number that hold senior championship medals with Rathcline.
Alcohol Anon Meetings
Relatives and friends of alcoholics are welcome to attend meetings in the Family Centre building at the back of St. Mel’s Cathedral on St. Mel’s Road, any Tuesday evening at 7pm.
Smart Recovery
SMART recovery is an evidence based addiction recovery support group where participants learn self-empowering techniques to aid their recovery by overcoming addictive behaviour.

St. Mary’s Church
Parish Office: Maireád Rooney, Rathcline has been appointed Parish Secretary. Maireád will be in her office in the Parish House each week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10.15am until 2.30pm. As the office gets established Maireád will be able to assist you with any enquiries.
Catechists: The parish now has 2 new catechists namely Jacinta Brady and Catherine McDermott who will help out with different projects over the year.
Mass Review: With just 2 priests catering for three parishes’ consideration will have to be given as to the number of Masses in the Church each week. In the near future a review will take place and the new Mass schedule will be announced and will commence after Christmas.
Rosary Group meet in the church on Monday to Friday at 9.30am and on Saturday and Sunday at 3pm.
Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesdays in the church from 10.30am until 8pm. It is very important that there will be at least two people in the church for each hour of the Adoration.
