Community College Enrolment
Lanesboro Community College has just announced enrolment for the school year 2023 is now open
Lanesboro Community College continues to grow and go from strength to strength such is the quality of the teaching and academic success. Last year the college had its largest influx of first year students and they have been given permission for building a further seven rooms on the school site such is the demand for places in the school. Accommodating this new influx means more rooms are necessary for the growth of the college. Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Mary Chapman, Lisnacusha, and her family, on the death of her sister, Teresa Heffernan, Monkstown, Co. Dublin. Teresa passed away on Wednesday 19th October.

Former resident passes away
It was with great sadness we learned of the death at the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, Farnham, Surrey, England of Thomas Reynolds, West End, Surrey and formerly of the Green on Friday 7th October. Mossy as he was known locally was a thorough gentleman, warm in personality and endowed with a gentle nature. His glowing and welcoming smile endeared him to everyone that met him. He was predeceased by his parent Thomas and Mary Kate, brothers Brendan, Seanie and Jim. We extend our deepest sympathy to his brother Fr. Kevin, sisters, Rosemary, Eileen, Ann, Theresa, relatives and friends.
A Remembrance Mass took place on Saturday last in St. Patrick’s Church, Castlerea and a private family burial will take place at a later date.
Dangerous area
With the street light off and the path uneven this area around the church and path to Knock is now very dangerous. During the long days and evenings the danger was not immediately noticeable but with the onset of the long dark evenings the danger immediately became apparent. Coming out from evening Masses is now proving very problematic as well as people walking up and down from Church View estate in the evenings and night. Hopefully Longford county council will react to the issue with the footpaths on both sides of the road and ESB will relight the street light that has been off for a long time.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the Ward and Gavigan families, Cullentra and Thureen on the death on Saturday last 22nd October of Mike Bawle, Portanure, Newtowncashel. Mike was brother of Mrs. Claire Ward and the late Ann Gavigan. Mike was married to Margaret Gill, formerly of the Rathcline Road and we extend our sympathy to Margaret and her family Debbie, Liz Michelle and John.
Rathcline Table Quiz
The Rathcline GAA club is holding a Table Quiz in the Peer Inn on this coming Saturday night 29th October. The quiz master will start asking the questions at 9pm. A great night of entertainment is assured and there will also be a raffle on the night. Tables of 4 will cost €40 and it is definitely not a night to be missed. Gather a team and go along for the craic.
Train how to use the Defibrillator
Defibrillators are devices that send an electric pulse or shock to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat. They are used to prevent or correct an arrhythmia, an uneven heartbeat that is too slow or too fast. If the heart suddenly stops, defibrillators can also help it beat again. That is the very reason that we need more and more people trained up in the use of this vital life saving device. The local defibrillator group is actively seeking new people in the Kilgefin, Ballyleague, Cashel, Killashee and Rathcline Lanesboro areas to become competent in the use of the Defibrillator. The group is also looking to retrain and refresh those that have already completed the course and need to brush up on its use.

Check your passport
If you are intending travelling over the Christmas period or over the New Year it would be no harm to take out your passport and check the expiry date. Earlier in the year there were long delays in the issuing of passports. To avoid the rush in the run up to Christmas and New Year it is worth checking your passport now and taking the necessary action.
Looking for Composers
The Cork International Choral festival is now accepting entries from Irish composers for the 2023 Seán Ó Riada Composition Competition. The winning piece will be given its premiere performance by Chamber Choir Ireland at the festival’s Gala Concert in Cork in April.
The score should be an original work, written for a cappella choir and up to five minutes in duration. It should be in four parts and the selected text may be original or existing, in Irish or English. See corkchoral.ie and the deadline is 5th December.
Defibrillator Funding – Thank You
The Defibrillator Group would like to sincerely thank everyone that has contributed so generously to the appeal for funding to replace batteries and pads and the constant need to upgrade all the defibrillators.
The importance of defibrillators in the general area cannot be overstated. The lives it can save and has saved in recent times are well documented.
If you wish to contribute we ask that you donate by leaving money in an envelope marked with your name into Martina or Joe O’Brien at the Corner Shop.
Primary School Science Fair
The Primary Science Fair will again take place in person alongside the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2023, from 12th – 14th January 2023 at the RDS Dublin with the successful applicants exhibiting their project to the judges and members of the public on one of these three days.
For over 20 years, the Primary Science Fair has been a core component of BTYTSE. It encourages 3rd to 6th class primary school students to develop their interest in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in a non-competitive environment. It also inspires them to become future participants in BTYSTE, one of the world’s leading and longest-running school science exhibitions.
Halloween Tractor Run
A Halloween Tractor Run in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital will take place on Sunday next 30th October. The registration centre will be The Local, Newtowncashelfrom 3pm. The tractors will leave Newtowncashel at 4pm. The entry fee is €20 per tractor.
With a Kids Halloween Disco
As part of the day’s celebration there will be a Kids Halloween Disco with free face painting, nibbles, music and fun in the Pier Inn from 5pm to 7pm.
And it does not finish there Following the earlier events the evening will draw to close with a Fancy Dress Night.

Boat Trips
Lough Ree Access for all boat is a boat built for you is offering three sailing trips a day 10am, 12 noon and 2.30pm. This is a great trip of fascination onto Lough Ree and its famous islands.
Ballyleague Bingo
Ballyleague Bingo continues in Ballyleague Hall every Thursday night. The first numbers will be called at 8.30pm.
Volunteers required

50/50
Congratulations to Elizabeth and Francis Clyne, Corrigeen, who was last week’s winner of the Rathcline 50/50. Elizabeth and Francis won the top prize of €621. The draw took place in the Yacht Bar.
The club is extremely grateful for your continued tremendous support.

The final Service of the month of October takes place on Sunday 30th October Service in St. Coman’s Church Roscommon at 11.30am
Tidy Towns Lottery
On Tuesday 18th October the jackpot for the Lanesboro Tidy Towns lottery stood at €10,400 and as it was not won the jackpot rose to €10,500 for the draw on Tuesday 25th October. The winning numbers drawn on the 18th October were 5, 12, 17 and 20. The winner of the €50 prize was Mike Greene c/o FÁS, and the three €20 winners were Stella O’Sullivan, c/o Mags, Jack & Billy Mullooly c/o Mags and Johnny Malone, Cloontuskert.
The funds raised from the lottery are providing the financial support to do lots of great work throughout the town and environs. Comments all year long have been about how beautiful the town looks and this can only be done with your support for the lottery every week.

CD restocked
Frank Nelson newly released a new CD called ‘I’ll Put the Kettle On’ has proved to be a great success with a restocking of SD’s necessary to keep up with demand. Frank, a local man has been very active on the music scene for over 30 years This time he has really hit the high times with the quality and songs included. It is a must for followers of Frank and lovers of country music.

Sunday Night Card Game
The results of the Sunday night card game held in the Parish Hall are: It was a high scoring night with Kathleen & Annie 1st with 13 games. Hot on their heels were Peter & Mary Gregg with 12 games. Raffle winners were Niall Hughes, Barney Kenny, Jack Bannon & Geraldine Greene. Last game winners were Owen Casey & Brian Mulvihill. Game every Sunday night with light refreshments served.

Ballyboro FC
The club has been awarded the prestigious Club Mark by the FAI. The FAI Club Mark is an award based on best practise in the governance, management and administration of a football club. Thanks to Carol Donlon who compiled all the necessary paper work to ensure that the club secured the award.
The U11 Cougars found UCL Stormers too hot to handle in a game played in torrential rain. Ballyboro: Lee Carberry, Malachy Martin, Patrick Casey, Lorcan Vesey, Caolan McCann, Luke McDonald, Dylan Featherstone, Niall Morgan, Kyran Horohoe(1),Thomas Fallon, Jay Flynn(1). The under 11 Tigers had a comfortable win over Inny Rangers.
The under 12 girls team got off to a great start in their game with Killoe Celtic thanks to a well taken goal by Hannah Farrell. Killoe equalised before half time but Faye Hogan got Ballyboro back in front early in the second half, but Killoe finished the stronger and scored three further goals to run out 4-2 winners. Squad: Faye Hogan, Saoirse Feeney, Saoirse Dillon, Hannah Farrell, Chloe Kilcoyne, Rosie Farrell, Millie Cassidy, Ellen Cox, Kallie Herbert, Sinead Murray, Penelope, Kennedy, Laoise Farrell.

Copies of the Special Opening Day booklet are still available at O’Brien’s and Casserly’s. The booklet features an article by our international star Christian Donlon on his career to date. Former Roscommon Captain Ciaran Murtagh reflects on his time with Ballyboro. The club’s first Chairman Pat Hussey writes about the formation of the club while Development Officer Ciaran Mullooly covers in detail the development of the new grounds. The participation of the under 10s in the Solar Cup in Stoke in 2009 is covered and there is a special photographic feature of various Ballyboro players who played in the Kennedy Cup over the years. There are articles by Club Chairman John Tynan and Sean Dempsey, PRO of the Longford League. Absent friends are fondly remembered and there is a special Ballyboro Quiz. The hugely popular National Schools 5 a Side is featured. All the Ballyboro players, boys and girls, who played for the club since its formation are listed. In addition to all that there is a trip down memory lane with archival coverage of various Ballyboro players and teams over the years. The booklet is a collectors item and is great value at just 5 euro.
Fixtures: Three games on Saturday; the under 16s are away to Boyle Celtic in the Connacht Cup, 2pm kick off. The under 10s play Melview in The Mall at 12.30 pm while the under 8s will be in Blitz action with Newtown in Newtownforbes and the action gets underway at 10am. On Sunday at 1pm the under 12s are away to Kenagh United Falcons while the under 14s play Melview in Abbeycartron at 11.30pm.
Support line for older people
ALONE manage a national support line and additional support for older people who have concerns or are facing difficulties relating to Covid-19. Alcohol Anon Meetings
Relatives and friends of alcoholics are welcome to attend meetings in the Family Centre building at the back of St. Mel’s Cathedral on St. Mel’s Road, any Tuesday evening at 7pm.
Smart Recovery
SMART recovery is an evidence based addiction recovery support group where participants learn self-empowering techniques to aid their recovery by overcoming addictive behaviour.

The opening hours of Lanesboro are: Monday 2pm-8pm, Tuesday 2pm-6pm, Wednesday 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pm. The library will be closed all day on a Thursday. Friday 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pm and Saturday 10am-1pm

St. Mary’s Church
Parish Office: Maireád Rooney, Rathcline has been appointed Parish Secretary. Maireád will be in her office in the Parish House each week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10.15am until 2.30pm. As the office gets established Maireád will be able to assist you with any enquiries.
Catechists: The parish now has 2 new catechists namely Jacinta Brady and Catherine McDermott who will help out with different projects over the year.
Mass Review: With just 2 priests catering for three parishes’ consideration will have to be given as to the number of Masses in the Church each week. In the near future a review will take place and the new Mass schedule will be announced and will commence after Christmas.
Rosary Group meet in the church on Monday to Friday at 9.30am and on Saturday and Sunday at 3pm.
Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesdays in the church from 10.30am until 8pm. It is very important that there will be at least two people in the church for each hour of the Adoration.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club
Our Annual end of season parish league shall be run on Saturday 5th Nov from 2 – 5pm in Clonbonny. It will be a great afternoon to close out the season with lots of refreshments. More details will follow next week.
