Lanesboro Ballyleague notes

Community College Open Night Thursday

Lanesboro Community College has just announced enrolment for the school year 2023 is now open.

Lanesboro Community College continues to grow and go from strength to strength such is the quality of the teaching and academic success. Last year the college had its largest influx of first year students and they have been given permission for building a further seven rooms on the school site such is the demand for places in the school. Accommodating this new influx means more rooms are necessary for the growth of the college. Application forms and further information can be got by contacting the school secretary at https://lanesborocc.com/or by phoning 043 33 21139 or from the college website

An ‘Open Night’ will take place at the Lanesboro Community College on this Thursday 17th November from 7pm to 9pm.

Death

When one moves to a new community it takes some time to bed in and get to know the locals. This was not the case with Liam Furlong who came to Lanesboro along with his wife Ann when they bought Kiernan’s house on the Longford Road. Liam, suddenly, passed away at his residence in Aughamore on Tuesday last 8th November to the great shock and sorrow of everyone that knew him. This past 13 months Liam had suffered greatly with the death of his wife not 13 months ago, his brother Seamus in July and his sister Mary in September. He was also predeceased by his parents Patrick and Anastasia and his brothers and sisters, John, Margaret, Teresa, Danny, and Thomas. Liam was a very proud native of County Wexford – no week went by without him buying his local Wexford People. He was a well travelled man through his time in the Irish Army where he was recognised as an excellent soldier rapidly rising the ranks to sergeant. Liam was a man with a word for everyone, a true and loyal friend. While himself and Ann were not blessed with family he was a brilliant family man as was clear to be seen and heard from the great expressions of grief from his nephews, nieces and in-laws. Liam will be remembered for his great pride in the garden whether it was vegetables or flowers. He always had the humorous word he was never slow to tell a joke on himself. He loved nothing more that the bit of banter and the community will be much the poorer by his absence. A man that had a deep faith and he was a regular mass goer. Liam had a great interest in politics and never afraid to nail his colours to the mast. We will miss Liam but will always have a smile on our face when we think of Liam and his banter. He was a very honourable and respectful man with a great degree of honesty and fair play. May his happy heart rest in peace.

Liam’s remains reposed at his residence until his removal on Friday to St. Mary’s Church for his Requiem Mass before being laid to rest alongside his beloved Ann.

To his brothers Padge and Gussy, sisters Bridget, Isobel and Kitty, nieces, nephews, relatives and many many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Talented Sisters Exhibition

Souvenirs from the Flatlands is an Art Exhibition taking place in the old Providers building on Main Street Longford from Saturday 26th November until Tuesday 29th November. The exhibition will be open each day from 12pm to 5pm. The exhibition will officially open on Friday 25th November at 7pm.

This exhibition is collaboration between local sisters and renowned artists Emily and Grace Brennan daughters of Pat and Liz Brennan Lismacmanus. Both ladies have gained tremendous notoriety in the world of art for their excellent works.

Emily is a visual artist from BKB Visual Art Studio in Glasnevin which she set up with two friends and now hosts a number of artists. She recently accepted a place in the Cultural Policy and Art Management Masters course in UCD.

Younger sister Grace graduated from the National College of Art and Design in 2020. The quality of her work on Irish boglands cultural and environmental significance through the idea of land memory was greatly acclaimed and at the online graduation exhibition she sold four magnificent paintings thus enabling her to rent her own studio. Grace has continued to grow and her work is greatly acclaimed.

The exhibition in Longford is a must for everyone to visit. We wish the girls huge success in Longford with Souvenirs from the Flatlands.

Primary School project on Power Station

With the imminent taking down of Lanesboro Power Station, the pupils of Lanesboro National School who existed in the shadow of the station for the lifetime of the different stages of the stations are undertaking a project and they need your assistance.

Lanesboro NS in association with Creative Schools, the Arts Council Dublin, and Shuttermaniac Productions Lanesboro are looking for ESB-related anecdotes in order to produce an engaging short film as part of a Creative Schools Film Project. Perhaps there’s an endearing or funny story that you or a relative or neighbour remember at their time in and around the ESB.

The kids at Lanesboro will be presenting this story on film so please keep it short and entertaining if possible.

If you think you do have a wee anecdotal nugget, please get in touch with Lee Williamson, Claire Murphy or Niamh Rowan in Lanesborough NS.

Not only will this be a school project but also a part of history of what stood in Lanesboro and gave so much employment since the mid 50s.

Champions

Congratulations to the Fermoyle NS football team who won the Division 2 Mixed League Final in Michael Fay Park, Farneyhoogan on Thursday evening last.

Table Quiz Deferred

The Lanesboro Tidy Towns group have deferred their Table Quiz scheduled for this Friday night in the Yacht Bar until the New Year. This was done as it clashed with the Fermoyle NS Table Quiz on Friday night.

Lanesboro Community Games

The AGM for Lanesboro Community Games was cancelled last Thursday due to the local schools football final competition in Longford. The meeting is rescheduled for Thursday 24th November 2022 at 8 p.m. in St Mary’s Hall. The committee is looking forward to a good attendance.

The Zesty Citrus Vodka retained the title of Best Irish Vodka while Sling Shot Gin and The Bridge –Killinure Single Grain Whiskey won Gold Medals.

This was a fabulous achievement for the Lough Ree Distillery, the Clancy family and the two Mikes for their tremendous work.

This is a tremendous recognition for the inventiveness of Clancy family and their continued development.

Great Weekend

Lanesboro Triathlon Club travelled in large numbers to Westport last weekend for the annual and challenging Westport Sea2Summit. There were some outstanding performances along the way and all enjoyed what was a great weekend.

Line Dancing Classes

One of the most striking things at country dances is the growth of Line Dancing.

You now have the opportunity to get into Line Dancing with classes in the Quad Centre on the Circular Road Roscommon every Sunday evening at 6pm. Christopher Beirne the renowned Line Dance tutor will ensure that you will be soon in step and enjoying the phenomenon that is Line Dancing. There is absolutely no better way to get pleasure from a winter evening than learning and enjoying Line Dancing.

Killian Home Place

Last Wednesday night the RTÉ programme Nationwide featured the Killian homestead in Fermoyle. A number of years ago Joan Killian Gallagher along with her husband Chris Clarke went about buying the old family homestead. The buildings were almost in ruins but with much time and loving care they brought the cottages back from the dead and restored them to the highest quality. The pride on Joan’s face as she recounted the family history was clear to be seen and her dedication to the project was clear to be seen.

Since the cottages were done up Joan has, every June Bank Holiday weekend, entertained the Notre Dame University students learning in Ireland in Fermoyle and without exception it has become a feature that all students look forward to their trip to Fermoyle.

The work done is a credit to Joan and Chris and it truly enhances our community and will do so for many years to come.

If you missed the programme on Wednesday night last you can watch it back on the RTÉ player and it is really is essential watching.

Shannon rising

So early in the winter the height of the Shannon water is incredible. The torrential rainfall ofver the past few weeks has the water level so high that it has cut off some of the walking routes for the great number of walkers in the community.

Hopefully the rainfall will come to a stop soon and the water abates reopening the walking routes.

Better Estate Award

Congratulations to Knock Manor who were announced in second place in the Longford Council Estates awards recently. This is a great credit to the committee and the residents for the hard work done in this new estate.

Rapid Response Meeting

Roscommon Rapid Response is holding public meetings throughout the county to inform community members and defibrillator groups about the Community Emergency Response System.

We will also provide groups with a map of their defibrillator locations which will enable them to identify black spots and a draft outline of a proposal for Grant Aid.

The Community Response System enables a 4/5 minute medical response (quality CPR & Defibrillation) for Cardiac Arrest victims in your community. This 4/5 minute response time has been proven by medical research to achieve up to 75% survival rate for cardiac arrest victims.

The current survival rate in Ireland is 5%. We can save lives in every community throughout Co. Roscommon with a very simple community emergency response system.

Go to www.emcallapp.com  and download the EmCall App to your phone for free.

Please attend the meeting in Ballyleague/Lanesboro – Ballyleague Hall on this Wednesday 16th November 2022 at 8.30 p.m. sharp. The meeting will last one hour. Individuals or Groups can, after meeting, discuss their individual issues.

Lough Ree AC-Connaught Cross Country Championships

Normally the venue for leading trainers and jockeys in Ireland in both Flat and National Hunt Racing, Roscommon Racecourse last Sunday became the venue for the Connaught Cross Country Championship for the uneven age groups, Under 11, 13, and upwards. The going was soft after the recent rain but this did not deter the large number of athletes. Unfortunately we were not able to field a full team in any age group but pride of place must go to our under 11 competitors who had a great day out. As cross country only starts from under 11 this was the first competition for most of our athletes. First up were the girls, Lucy Flynn who is suited to the longer distance led her team mates home in the 1500m run over rough and soggy terrain, she was closely followed by Shauna Mulvihill and Georgina Johnston. As a team consists of four athletes so we were not eligible for a team placing. In the boys under 11 first home was our recent Roscommon Champion Donncha Farrell, well supported by his club mates Cian Shea and Tadhg Shea, Tadhg will be eligible in this age group again next year. All the athletes thoroughly enjoyed the experience, cross country as they say is not for the faint hearted and conditions were testing to say the least, well done to all our athletes, you did us proud and thanks to the Roscommon County Athletics Board for a very well organised event. Congratulations to Maura Derwin who represented Ireland in the International Masters Cross Country event in Dublin, on Saturday. Maura was the first Irish woman home in her category and she led the women’s team to bronze medals. Training continues in the hall on Tuesday evening 6pm

Train how to use the Defibrillator

Defibrillators are devices that send an electric pulse or shock to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat. They are used to prevent or correct an arrhythmia, an uneven heartbeat that is too slow or too fast. If the heart suddenly stops, defibrillators can also help it beat again. That is the very reason that we need more and more people trained up in the use of this vital life saving device. The local defibrillator group is actively seeking new people in the Kilgefin, Ballyleague, Cashel, Killashee and Rathcline Lanesboro areas to become competent in the use of the Defibrillator. The group is also looking to retrain and refresh those that have already completed the course and need to brush up on its use.

If you are interested, please leave your name and phone number with Martina O’Brien personally in the shop or by phoning 086 3858934 or email to clynemartina53@gmail.com
