Annual 25 Card Drive

This year the Rathcline Ladies GAA club is taking the honour of hosting the Annual 25 Drive (partners) on Good Friday night 10th April in the Co-Op Hall. The tradition of the Good Friday night game goes back a long number of years and it is the main fundraiser for the Ladies GAA club this year. We would encourage every card player in the parish and surrounding parishes to go along and support what is a great night of card playing. We would also encourage all card players to encourage others from the wider area to go along and make this a most memorable night. Tickets are priced at an extremely reasonable €5 and are available from club members and from O’Brien’s Corner Shop.

It was with great sadness we learned of the death at the County Hospital Roscommon on Tuesday last 17th March of Mrs. Margaret Maguire, The Green. Margaret was predeceased some years back by her husband Eugene. In recent time she was in failing health and she bore her cross with great strength and courage. Margaret was a native of Cashel and moved to the Green following her Marriage to Eugene. She was a very determined and single minded lady and a very active worker in the Green Residents Committee. Margaret was also a very active and driving force in the Labour Party in Lanesboro. Her passing breaks another link with the original residents of the Green an area of our community that has suffered more than its share in the recent past. Her remains were removed from Farrell’s Funeral Home on Thursday evening to St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro and burial took place to Clonbonny cemetery following her Funeral Mass. To her daughter Mary, sons Pat and Ollie, brother and sister, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Archery – Open Day

Have you ever considered taking up the sport of archery? Growing up we all played cowboys and Indians – going down the woods on the Rathcline Road to get the materials to make our bows and arrows. If there was an archery club in Lanesboro at the time we had lads that would put an arrow through the eye of a needle. Unfortunately it just remained a game for us.

Now there is a new archery club entering the scene and I hope that there will be a huge interest in this excellent pastime. Bunnygeddy, a townsland, located 5 mile from Lanesboro as you go down the Strokestown Road will host an Open Day on Sunday next 29th March from 12noon for adults and children. Top Irish archers will display their skills and invite all present to have a try themselves. It should be a wonderful afternoon in Bunnygeddy Indoor Archery Centre and one not to be missed. If you are interested, classes will be available and hourly rates will apply. For all information and bookings you are asked to phone 086-3410657.

Lough Ree Rowing Club

Lough Ree Rowing club meets every Saturday morning at 10.30 am at the club’s boathouse in the Car Park in Lanesboro. Anyone with an interest is welcome!

We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Mrs. Mary B. Connor on the death of her sister in law Isobel Gillen, Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan.

The communities of Ballyleague and Lanesboro were shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden and untimely death of Joe Fallon at his residence on Wednesday last 18th March.  Joe a native of the Ballyglass townsland was a pleasant young man whose death was untimely was much too short for a man just over 40 years. Joe spent some time in the USA where he was predeceased by his wife. His familiar gait and presence will be sadly missed on the street of our town. In conversations with Joe one would have to be moved by his wonderful demeanour and outlook on life. He will be sadly remembered by all that had the pleasure to know him. The attendance at the removal of his remains to the Church of the Holy Rosary Ballyleague from his family home in Ballyglass and again at his funeral Mass and burial to Cloontuskert cemetery bore testimony to the esteem he was held. He will be sadly missed by his sons James and Joseph, USA, his mother Rita, father Joe, brothers John and Kenneth, sisters Helena and Shirley, relatives and many friends to whom we would like to extend our heartfelt sympathy.

U11 – Ballyboro V Castlepollard Reds. Final Score 2-0.
Ballyboro travelled to Castlepollard on Saturday evening last for this thrilling game of football. This was a very competitive game between two strong teams with both having some great chances in the 1st half. Kevin Sorohan & Mikey Cox covered every ground and played excellent in midfield with some fine crosses to Jonathan Hussey & Shane Phillips upfront. 0-0 at half-time it looked like the game could go either way. Cian Gannon came on for Boro in the 2nd half and six minutes in, a clean pass from Mikey Cox found Shane Phillips chipping the ball onto Kevin Sorohan who tapped it into the back of the net, giving Boro their lead.  Castlepollard fought back and pilled on the pressure but Erin Farrell pulled off some cracking saves ably assisted by Joseph Farrell & Jack Irwin who both played outstanding in defence.  Conor English came on for Boro and Mikey Cox had a great chance at goal to lift Boro’s spirits. In the last minute of the game a well delivered pass from Shane Phillips set up Kevin Sorohan who pulled off a tremendous finish, drilling his shot into the bottom corner to score his 2nd goal of the game and secure Boro’s 2-0 victory. All players deserve great credit for a magnificent team performance on the day.
