Lanesboro – Ballyleague Notes

It was with a great sadness we learned of the death at the Vale View Nursing Home on Tuesday 24th November of Bridie Reynolds, Lisnaria. Bridie was predeceased a few years back by her husband Jim. She epitomised all the positive things of life, her warm friendly and generous nature ensured that she endeared herself to everybody that has the privilege to know her. As a neighbour and friend she excelled. Bridie worked with ESB until her retirement and was a very popular member of staff. Her passing will leave a great sadness in the hearts and minds of everybody that had the pleasure to know her. He remains were removed from Farrell’s Funeral Home on Wednesday to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague and her remains were laid to rest following Mass of the Resurrection in Cloontuskert cemetery. To her sister Mai, brothers Patsy and Vinny, sister in law Breege Nerney, brothers in law, Joe and Tom Reynolds, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Congratulations to Ciaran and Angela Mullooly, Ballyleague on the recent birth of a baby boy.

Rural Transport continues to connect Rural Ireland

Longford Community Resources Ltd is delighted with the news that the Rural Transport Programme is included in the Proposed Renewed Programme for Government. Hopefully it will be allowed to continue to provide the quality community based public transport system, to respond to local needs in the rural communities. The organising group, LCRL, want to thank everybody who supported and lobbied for the Programme following the McCarthy report.

As all 20 Routes are contracted to Local Providers, so we would encourage everybody to avail of the “Door to Door” service in your region, there are some spaces available, so better to “use it” or “lose it”. While there is a good take up in our area there is room for many more passengers. The bus leaves the corner for Longford every Tuesday at 10.40 and it is a service that should be availed of a lot more by locals. For more information, call Seamus at 043-3345555 or check  Updated timetables are available in Shops, Post Offices, Churches & Community Centres, it includes Polish and Russian version.

Tomas originally from Derryadd, Killashee had lived for many years at upper Main street. He was one of nature’s true gentlemen and his quiet, gentle and friendly manner endeared him to everybody that had the privilege to know him. He maintained his faming interest where he travelled to work his land so diligently on a daily basis. Tomás will be sadly missed by all that had the pleasure to know him. To his sister Regina (USA), sister in law Tess Fallon Derryadd, relatives and many friends we would like to extend our sincere and heartfelt sympathy. Lough Ree AC

The under 11 Boys made the very long journey to Coleraine, Co. Derry over the weekend. While the day was fine and sunny the underfoot conditions were atrocious after another day week with rain. A poor starting official for the races did not help matters and it brought the following comment from a ten year old” Hi starter, if you don’t let us go soon, I will ring Childline “ Fair comment! Not a lot was expected of this very young team but it was felt that the experience would be invaluable. They performed admirably and it was a credit to them.  The Lanesboro and Killoe lads certainly enjoyed themselves over the weekend and they can take pride in the fact that they were the first team to qualify for an All Ireland for years.

At the time of writing we see from the internet that the under 13 and under 15 races were declared null and void. It’s not over yet!!

Church Gate Collection – It was unfortunate that the annual Church Gate collection coincided with shocking weather conditions and created some problems. The club would like to thank everybody that contributed and the few that took up the collection, particularly Pat Costello who looked after Ballyleague on his own.

Training continues in Ballyleague Hall on Tuesday evenings at 7pm.
