Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes Monday 8th April 2013

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Thank You

The Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club wish to sincerely thank the members of Lanesboro’s Brush Strokes Art Group for their very generous donation and indeed for their unyielding support to the club down through the years. Brush Strokes have recently donated the proceeds from the sales of their beautiful 2013 calendar to the club. The calendar features work from the members of the group and is truly a wonderful piece. In the aftermath of the devastating fire at our boathouse and rescue centre their very kind donation has helped to ensure that we are slowly but surely starting on the road to recovery. Brush Strokes Art Group was founded in 1995. The group meet on a weekly basis and their work is mainly influenced by the surrounding environment.  Their work is always worth a peek and usually a very affordable way of capturing the beauty of the surrounding countryside. It’s a testament to the members of Brush Strokes Art Group and indeed to the wider Lanesboro / Ballyleague community to see one club help another out in their hour of need.

A meeting of the Lanesboro Gathering committee will take place on Tuesday night 16th March at 7.30pm in Adie Farrell’s meeting room at 8pm.

Come along and be part of what promises to be a fantastic weekend for the entire community.

Call for accommodation

Both Lanesboro Triathlon club and the Gathering committee are seeking to draw up a data base of property for rent during the ‘Two Provinces’ Sprint Triathlon on Sat July 13th 2013 which this year will also incorporate Triathlon Ireland National Series and also for the Gathering on August Bank Holiday weekend. Please contact Joe O’Brien or Siobhan Mimnagh as soon as possible.

The news was greeted with sadness on Sunday 31st march when it was learned that Anne Donohue, Lehery had passed away from this life. Anne along with her husband bought a residence and land in Lehery a number of years back. She has been sick for a few years and she bore her illness with a wonderful dignity and fortitude as was the character of the lady.  Anne was a very warm and friendly lady and anyone that had the pleasure to know her will attest to that. She was a lady that loved gardening and she enjoyed nothing better than to tend to her garden. The warmth of her smile and greeting will be long remembered and will be missed. Her passing will leave a great void with everyone that came to know her.

Her remains reposed at her residence on Tuesday last until her removal to St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro. Following her Funeral mass on Wednesday her remains were laid to rest in Clonbonny cemetery. To her husband Bill, sons Liam and Joe, daughters Bridget, Catherine and Ann Marie, sisters Margaret Kilbride and Philomena, brothers Albert, Jimmy and Pat, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Co Longford VEC visits Lanesboro Library

This is a free service and all are welcome.

Kilgefin Community Games

Kilgefin Community Games are holding their Annual Sports day on Sunday next 14th April at the St. Faithleach’s club grounds.

There will be events for all children from U8 to U16. The first race will start at 2pm sharp. All parents in the parish are asked to encourage and go along and support their child on Sunday. Athletics is for everyone and all children in the parish should be participating.

The Community games Art & Handwriting competitions were held recently and there was a great response. The committee would like to thank all the local schools for their help in organising the events. The judges were very impressed by the high standard of the Art & Handwriting – they had a very difficult job selecting the winners. The committee congratulates all the winners and are delighted to see that four of the local prize winners went on to win county medals. Conor Rohan received first prize in the U14 Art which was a wonderful achievement. Congratulations also to Aoife Connaughton who was second in the U10 Girls Art, Conor Gannon second in U10 Handwriting and Mark Cox was awarded third in the U13 handwriting.

Thank You

The day was dry with a low chill factor but it did not deter the many runners and walkers that turned out for the challenging 10k and 4 mile fun run and walk. It was a great race with Lorcan Gearty setting the pace throughout and came home as winner of the men’s race. Marie Sudway continued her great form in the ladies race and came home in first position.

The Gathering committee would like to thank everyone that turned out to run, to all the stewards, Liam Dennigan for his vital statistics on the course, the ladies representing the Shannon Gaels Minor club, the members of the Gathering committee, the local Gardaí, Peter and Geraldine Donlon, Lisreevagh who took command of the water station and two vital groups without whose help and expertise the race would not have taken place and they are; Lanesboro Triathlon club and the Lough Ree Athletic club.

The entire area came to shuddering halt when it was learned of the death on Wednesday last 3rd April at Innis Ree Lodge, Ballyleague of Peg Clarke, Main Street. Peg was predeceased some 17 years ago by her late husband Frank. Some years ago Peg along with Frank returned from England to reopen the Clarke family bar that was synonymous with Lanesboro for many a generation. She was the ultimate lady who endeared herself to everyone right from the outset. Peg was a very dignified and hardworking woman. She was a lady that treasured her family greatly. Signs on the deep affection she showed them was plain to be seen by the great care they showed for her during her declining health despite all living away from home. Over the years Peg was a landmark in our town, while being a very private lady she was a lady that was hugely respected in the area and a lady whose advice was always listened to and heeded. The passing of Peg Clarke will leave a great emptiness in our Main Street and also in the minds and hearts of anyone that knew her. Her remains reposed in Farrell’s Funeral Home on Friday before the removal of her remains to St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro. On Saturday following her Requiem Mass her remains were laid to rest alongside her husband Frank in Cloontuskert cemetery. T her sons Barry and Mark, daughters Allison and Sarah, sister Kathleen, brothers Jim and Mattie, relatives and many many friends we extend our heartfelt sympathy.

League Champions

Well done to the Boro Celtic team that clinched the combined counties league in style on Saturday last on the Community College pitch. A draw would have been sufficient for them to claim the title but they were determined to win in style and that they did when they beat Melville on a scoreline of 5-0. This is a further feather in the cap for their dedicated management team of Aaron Wyse and Jeaffrey Mc Gann. Their season has not ended just yet as they are in the Area Cup and Division 1 Cup and hopefully they will make it a treble reason for celebrations in the next few weeks.
