Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

The Green  – A living History

Due to a family event over the latter days of the week I an unable to continue my coverage of the Green but I can assure you it will be back next week

Triathlon on Saturday

One of the biggest occasions in the calendar in Lanesboro and Ballyleague will take place on Saturday next 11th July when the local triathlon club will once again host the Two Provinces Triathlon.

The Two Provinces since its inception has continued to grow and grow and has become one of the leading sprint triathlons in the country. The entries for this popular event has been massive and we look forward to everyone having a very special time in Lanesboro and Ballyleague.

The day will commence with a kidathon beginning at 9am when a huge number of youngsters between the ages of 8 and 15 will take part in the Kidathon. The youngsters will consist of a 100m swim followed by a 5km cycle and finishing with a 500m sprint to the finish.

The main event will start at the harbour behind the car park with a 750m swim followed by a 20km cycle to Scramogue and back and finishing with a 5km run to Harold’s cross and back.

I urge everyone from the locality to come out and cheer on all the triathletes as they take on the challenge. We must celebrate the success of Lanesboro’s Tri Club in organising another huge event in our community and the attendance of everyone is paramount to acknowledging the great work of the club.  Make this a bigger and better supported triathlon than we ever had before.

Please note that to see any stage of the event you need to be in the carpark and/or on the roadway to Scramogue and back. The run this year will not go through the Main Street so if you spectated on the Main Street previously you will have to go to the car park and harbour area to view.

Were you a student commencing your secondary school education in St. Joseph’s Secondary School Lanesboro in 1960? Were you a teacher in the school at that time? Did you start Secondary School in Convent of Mercy, as a Day Pupil or a Boarder in 1960?

Did you sit the Inter. Cert in 1963? And /or/ repeat in 1964?

Lough Ree AC

Tullamore was the venue for the first of the 3 days allocated for the All-Ireland Athletic championship for the U13s and upward to senior men and women on Saturday last. The club representation was small in quantity, but huge with quality on the proceeding days. Conor Rohan was the clubs only qualifier on the day, participating in the boy’s U1 Discus.  The Ballagh youngster did the club proud. Competing in those championships for the very first time, Conor qualified for the final “throw offs”, when the top eight get an extra three throws.  He finished 4th, just outside the medals or approximately 30cms – a small distance in 40meters. The first two threw over 40m and the 3rd threw 39m. Conor has passed 40m in practice but as any golfer will tell you competition is different.

Conor will be in action again next month when he represents Co. Roscommon in the Community Games Finals in Athlone. We wish him well.
