Lanesboro Ballyleague
Christmas Wishes
Throughout the year I receive so much support from so many people in our community meaning that I can get all the up to date information to all readers week in week out. I would like to thank everyone that furnished me with local information throughout the year. The feedback I received from a lot of the notes was very frank and very honest.
To everyone that gives me notes, to all readers be it on email, on my blog page ( www.joeobrien.ie ) or weekly on the Lanesboro Ballyleague notes on the Longford Leader I would like to thank you so very much.
As I write I am conscious of so many people that are ill be it at home or in hospital, all the people in Nursing Homes and all of the friends and family that will not and cannot be with us at Christmas. I wish each and every one of them the very best during this time of the year.
I would like to wish you all a Christmas filled with an abundance of joy and happiness and a New Year that will see all your dreams come true.
Thank you all once again.

2018 Calendar
I have just come by a new calendar for 2018. It displays the great fauna, nature and biodiversity that surrounds us and making us aware of the natural beauty – some of which is disappearing at an alarming rate. There are some beautiful photographs and the calendar is well worth having in your home or office. There are a small number for sale in O’Brien’s.
Thank You

Sean has 13 years’ experience with Lanesboro Fire Brigade and has an in-depth knowledge of all the requirement for a clean chimney. Give him a call (086-1687630) for a quote.
Death
Tuesday last 12th December at University College Hospital Galway Margaret Dunne, Doughill, Curraghroe went to her final reward having valiantly fought her illness for a number of years. She was predeceased by her father Pat Joe and sister Bríd. Maggie as she was more commonly was only in her mid-40’s. She will always be remembered as a warm friendly and personable lady forever obliging. Maggie’s endearing smile and good humour disarmed even the coldest of situations. She was a compassionate lady totally dedicated to her family. Maggie will be sadly missed by everyone that had the pleasure to know her. She fought her illness with wonderful spirit and strength.
The attendance at the reposing of her remains at Mc Hugh’s Funeral Home, Strokestown on Thursday bore ample testimony to esteem in which Maggie was held before the removal of her remains to St. Cecilia’s Church, Curraghroe. Following her Funeral Mass on Friday she was laid to rest in Scramogue cemetery.
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to her mother Mary, sisters Deirdre, Dolores and Catherine, brothers Declan and Padraig, relatives and many many friends.

Christmas Party
In the old Convent Hall (Lough Ree Resources Hall) on Friday last the five annual Christmas Party took place for the senior citizens of the area. Annette Coffey (Clancy) and her loyal band of workers organised another wonderful party. The food was great, the sup of drink helped lots, the entertainment afterwards was tremendous, and the topping of a fabulous Party was Santa Claus who had a present for everyone.
Annette and her supporting crew must be commended greatly for again organising a wonderful day in the community. A word of thanks must also go to the many businesses and people that generously sponsored gifts and prizes all helping to making the day such a wonderful and happy day.

Thank You
The Lough Ree Monster Festival would like to sincerely thank everyone that supported the Lough Ree Monster Festival throughout the entire year. Over the year we had many events and you supported the committee in each and every one of them.
The committee’s aim was to bring a musical festival back to the area and to create something special for its people. I feel it has achieved that and it could not have happened without the support of the people of the locality that supported the festival.
The committee would like to thank you all once again and wish you a beautiful and peaceful Christmas and a most wonderful and healthy New Year.

Lough Ree Athletic Club
The club is looking forward to the annual Christmas Day Run from Newtowncashel to the bridge at Lanesboro. Every year this event proves to be a very popular occasion. Apart from the race there will be many visitors home for Christmas and reunions will be the order of the day.
The club’s interest will come from the fact that some of our older members want to start in Newtowncashel and good luck to them. The younger ones will start their race from the track at the Community Collage at 12.15 (after last mass), finishing at the parish hall, where refreshments will be provided to the finishers.
Finally, a word of appreciation to the organisers for helping to make Christmas Day so special for everyone. The event continues to be sponsored by Peter Hanley Motors, the proceeds of which go to MS Longford.
The club’s Church Gate collection is on the 30th and 31st of December and your support will be appreciated.
