Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

On the RTÉ website, sports section, local girl RTÉ sports journalist Sinead Farrell, daughter of Fintan and Mary Farrell, Rathcline had a wonderful article on the success of Longford in the Leinster Championship 50 years ago. It was a tremendous read, it brought back many memories and I am sure it will for all the Longford people that were there on the day to celebrate the historic the first Leinster Senior Championship to come to Longford. I am sure it will also create a hunger for anyone that reads this article to see Longford back in the big time once again.

Sinead captured the atmosphere of the time greatly and her interviews with Seamus Flynn, The Green, Jackie Devine, Edgeworthstown and Cashel man Tim Donlon, were great. It was fitting that the article should have appeared on a day when Longford once again rose to the occasion and after 30 years are back into a Leinster semi-final on Sunday 10th June when they will take on Dublin in Croke Park. We look forward to seeing Longford back in the big time for a long time to come giving the most loyal of supporters reasons to be confident and full of expectation. Well done Sinead on a great article.

Social Services Whist

The monthly Whist Drive in aid of Lanesboro Social Services will take place on Friday next 1st May in St. Mary’s Parish Hall. There is still a tremendous demand on the work of our local Social services and we would encourage all card players to come along on Friday night and have a great night of card playing as well as supporting the fabulous work this committee continues to do. As usual refreshments will be served. If you are not a card player and would like to contribute you should put your contribution into an envelope and leave it into Tom Nohilly, Loretta Gallagher, Breda Moran or O’Brien’s shop.

All-Ireland Silver Medal Winners

Congratulations to our local Community Games team, whom competed at the National Finals last weekend in Limerick. They performed brilliantly when winning a silver medal. The team was managed by Brid Gordon and team members were Callum Gordon, Conor Lyons, Aileen Gordon and Ciara Merriman.

Midsummers Day with the Stars

The annual Midsummers day with the Stars will take place at Roscommon Racecourse on Sunday 24th June. Year on year this county music festival continues to grow and attracts an attendance from all parts of the country. It is a local festival and it is not too often we get talent such as those featuring so close to us and all on the one day. Featuring this year will be Nathan Carter, Robert Mizzell, Mike Denver, Patrick Feeney, Declan Nerney, Philomena Begley, Cliona Hagan, Johnny Brady and a host of other artists. The show will commence at 2pm and there will be free car parking. Admission is just €25, and tickets can be bought locally in O’Brien’s.

On Sunday night in the Abbey Hotel the Festival Dane will take place with Mike Denver and his Band will provide the music. Dancing from 9.30pm.

Championship Weekend

Last weekend was another fabulous weekend for all the football supporters in both Roscommon and Longford.

It all kicked off on Saturday when Roscommon travelled to Carrick on Shannon to take on Leitrim in the Connacht semi-final. The two local Ballyleague and St. Faithleach’s players were the tormentors in chief of the Leitrim defence. Roscommon won on a scoreline of 0-24 to Leitrim’s 0-10. Roscommon will now play the winners of the Sligo versus Galway game to be played next Sunday in Pearse Stadium at 3.30pm. The Connacht Final is due to be played in Hyde Park Roscommon on Sunday 17th June at 4pm.

Although being underdogs Longford welcomed Meath to Pearse Park on Sunday for their Leinster Quarter-Final game. Pearse Park had opened part of their stand for this game and the stadium was almost filled to the allowed capacity for what was expected to be a tight game. Tight the game was, and, in the end, Longford ended up 0-16 to Meath’s 0-14 and a place in the semi-final against Dublin in Croke Park. There is a lot of local involvement in all aspects of the team with Denis Connerton team manager, players Shane Donohoe, Liam Connerton, and Shane Kenny, goalkeeper coach Tommy Farrell and performance analyst Cian O’Brien. The semi-final against Dublin will take place as part of a semi-final double header in Croke Park on Sunday 10th June at 4pm.

Death

There was widespread sadness, in the Rathcline and Cashel parishes, when it was learned on Saturday 19th May of the death at his home in Carrowstrawley of Jimmy Casey. Jimmy passed away just six weeks after his wife Carmel and was predeceased by his daughter Elizabeth. Where would you begin to recount the impression, Jimmy left on both communities of Cashel and Rathcline and indeed much further afield. Jimmy and his late wife Carmel were always to be seen together and as in life both rest beside each other after 6 weeks of being apart. Jimmy was a footballer, teacher, writer and poet and each he excelled in. Football was played with his native Cashel where he was a respected and excellent footballer. When he retired from teaching he had imparted his genial nature and great aptitude for learning to many students through all his postings as a national school teacher. Writing was a passion for Jimmy and he conspired with John Casey and the late Sean Cahill for many books along with the publications he done on his own. His book on the islands of Lough Ree was and will remain a masterpiece. All his work was detailed with exactness as was his wont. His poetry came as part of the Lanesboro Writers group where he was a leading member. Jimmy was a warm and personable man and it was always a joy to be in his company. He was dedicated to his religion and was a daily communicant. In and around our community Jimmy will be sadly missed as well as in further places. We will always remember Jimmy Casey in his many guises and be grateful for his wonderful time in our midst. His passing is our great loss.

The attendance at the reposing of his remains at his home in Carrowstrawley and again at his Funeral Mass bore ample testimony to the esteem in which he was held. Jimmy reposed at his residence on Monday last and was removed to St. Mary’s Church for his Requiem Mass, burial took place following Mass to Rathcline Cemetery where he was laid to rest alongside his wife Carmel. To his son James, daughters Caitríona and Ciara, relatives and a multitude of friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Engagement

We would like to extend heartiest congratulations to Stephanie Breslin daughter of Paddy and Ann Breslin, Cloontuskert and Lorenz Weeth son of Christian and Schacki Weeth, Dahlienweg, Kirchheim unter Teck, Germany who announced their engagement recently.
