Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Monday 27th September 2021

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

New Appointment

Many congratulations to local Knock Manor resident Katlego Nono Kooitse who last weekend was appointed Ambassador for Imperial City Church to Ireland. A few years ago, she moved with her family to Lanesboro and has become a very popular figure in town. We wish he every success in her ambassadorial role.

Wanton Vandalism

Over the weekend the St. Faithleach’s dressing room, dugout and tractor were damaged in a case of reckless vandalism. As you can see from a section of the photographs that this was a horrendous act done by mindless vandals. If by any chance you were passing or seen people coming in or going out of the club grounds, can you inform that Gardaí in the hope that they may be able to throw some light on who may have done this damage.

On Friday evening the toilet that is open for public use had its mirror broken while the litter bin is continually emptied into the toilet bowl. One has to ask what the mindset of the people that perpetrate these mindless acts of vandalism and it is time that the culprits were caught.

If you know anything or have heard anything, please bring your information to the Gardaí.

We have a fabulous community with great work going on in it. We have heard nothing but praise all summer for our beauty and friendliness. This sheer vandalism has to stop and those that did the damage be brought to justice.

Death

The shocking news of the sudden death of one our young people in our community broke on Monday 13th September when we learned of the death of Cormac Brehon, Doughill. Cormac was the dearly loved only child of Padraic and Siobhán Brehon. The outpouring of sorrow within the greater community was palpable. Cormac like most young men was interested in music and cars but his greatest interest of all was in creative writing and art. He was a young man with a gentle heart, always conscious of those less fortunate. His was a humorous young man with a free and adventurous spirit and his passing will leave a wide circle of friends with saddened hearts.

Cormac’s remains reposed at his family home on Thursday 23rd before being removed to St. Cecilia’s Church, Curraghroe on Friday for his Funeral Mass. Interment took place following mass to Cloontuskert Cemetery. To his father Padraic, mother Siobhán, uncles Sean, Eamon, Tommie, Hughie, Anthony, Oliver, Liam, JJ, Michael and Justin and his aunts Ann (Nolan), Anne and Cindy, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Grafton Street Kitchens – keeps going

Expecting a good response to the Grafton Street Kitchen appeal the reaction of our local community has been truly unbelievable. If you have not already donated the box will remain in O’Brien’s for the foreseeable future.

The generosity you have shown towards Brendan O’Halloran and the work he does with the homeless has been remarkable. Brendan has his own work to contend with in Dublin and he still finds time to share his spare time with the needy working with the Grafton Street Kitchens.

This week the main appeal is as it was last week for white socks and wipes along with toiletries – shower gel, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, and water wipes to include in their parcels. This week, if possible, could you include men’s large underwear.

There is a drop off box in O’Brien’s shop. You are thanked for your tremendous generosity, and you are encouraged to keep donating for those people whose daily life for themselves and their families is a living hell. Some people have enquired as to whether they can donate money. If you so wish, please put money into an envelope with your name and address on it so that you can be receipted.

A note from Brendan Week 3 of donations of non-perishable foods, toiletries and white socks. This week if you can include men’s large underwear, please and they can be left into Joe and Martina O’Brien’s shop in Lanesborough. The collection has proven to be very successful and a big thanks to all of you who donated and continue to donate. Your donations are not just going to a Dublin problem, I have met people from Strokestown, Monaghan, Tyrone, Donegal and Liverpool as well as families who are sleeping on the street. Just remember this has happened as a result of numerous issues, such as family, drugs, family separation and lest we forget our successive and current government, who clearly turn a blind eye to this. These people are sleeping out tonight in the rain with no facilities or comforts like we are so lucky to have. So please keep them in your thoughts and continue to donate what you can to Grafton Street Kitchens who provide an invaluable voluntary service every Wednesday night. Thanks to Eilish Dillon, Joe and Martina O’ Brien for establishing this collection point for us.

Death

A man never to create waves created a great wave throughout the area when the news broke of the sudden death of Jim Vesey, Ballyclare, Ballyleague. Jim a proud Kerry native from Kenmare lived in Ballyclare where he set up Irish Pallets Systems 40 years ago. He was a man who developed his company into one of the leading businesses in the country. Jim was a quiet man who went about life and business in a thorough manner. He was quietly spoken, obliging, very warm and friendly. I cannot remember a time seeing or meeting him that he had not that warm and friendly smile. His life was devoted to his family, and he had a great belief in the power of education. Jim in recent times had been in failing health. He was cared for in a most loving manner by his wife Margaret and his family. Jim passing has created a great void in the hearts and minds of everyone that came to know him.

Jim’s remains reposed at his home before removal the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague on Monday 20th for Requiem Mass. Burial took place to Cloontuskert Cemetery. To his wife Margaret, daughter Marie, sons Lawrence, John, Patrick, James, Thomas, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Defibrillator Training

With a new defibrillator there is a great need for new people to get trained in the use of the defibrillator and to have people do their refresher courses. Knowledge in use of the defibrillator is extremely essential as we have seen locally in the recent past.

There will be a new course beginning in the near future and if you want to be included in the new course or refresher course you are invited to leave your name and phone number with Martina O’Brien in the shop or ring Martina at 086 3858934.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Joe Duffy and family, Church View on the death of Joe’s older brother John in Glasgow. John’s funeral will take place this Friday.

Death

It was with great sadness we learned of the death on Sunday 19th September of one of our most recent residents Paula Behan, Strokestown Road. Paula along with her husband George was predeceased by her parents Pat and Rita Whelan. Paula was an avid walker and was regularly seen walking the footpaths both sides of the bridge. She was a lady that endeared herself to everyone that came to know her. Her warm personality ensured that she seamlessly fitted into our community. Her beaming smile could be seen at a distance and the warmth of her greeting warmed even the saddest of hearts. Her passing will leave us the poorer but her warm personality will ensure we smile when we remember her.

Her remain reposed at the home of her daughter Joan and son in law Gean in Athlone from Monday 20th until her removal to Ss Peter and Pauls Church, Athlone for her requiem Mass. Following Mass, her remains were removed to Mount Jerome Crematorium for cremation.

To her husband George, family Joan, Raymond, Rhona, relatives and many friends we extend our heartfelt sympathy.

Outstanding Achievements

Last weekend the finals of the Community Games took place in Carlow last weekend. Lanesboro has had a proud tradition in the Community Games and this year it is no different. While we did not take away medals, we had two of our young people representing us in the Community Games finals. Faye Hogan daughter of Barry and Sinead Hogan and Oisín Dillon son of Denis and Eilish Dillon performed magnificently in the finals and really did our parish proud.

Support Rathcline Cemetery

As a result of no Cemetery Sunday there was no opportunity for the annual collection for the maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery. There is and has been great commendation for the manner in which cemetery is kept all year You are asked to place your contribution into an envelope and leave it into Joe or Martina at the corner shop.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the extended Cox family, Cloontuskert on the death of Pakie Cox, Scramogue brother of the late Joe Cox.

St. Faithleach’s had a very tight game in the Intermediate Championship when they overcame Fuerty on a scoreline of 0-17 to 1-13. They now meet Castlerea in two weeks’ time for a place in the final.

Ballyboro

Christian Donlon did the club and his family proud when making his debut on the Irish under 15 team against Montenegro in Podgorica last week.  The Irish team played the home team in two games. They won the first game 2-0 and Christian was instrumental in both goals. He came on as a half time substitute in the second game and once again he was very effective coming close to scoring twice in a game where the home team won 1-0. The fact that Christian is the only 13-year-old in the country to play international football for Ireland this year is testament to his outstanding ability and potential.

The under 13 team got their league campaign off to a great start when they had an emphatic victory over Ballymahon. They played some super football and can look forward to a successful season. Team and scorers; Eoin Beattie. Sean O’Dowd, John Farrell, Emre, Ciaran McGloin, Sean Collins, Keilon Gilmore (1), Leon Malkowski (3), Harry Brogan (1), Rian Hogan (4), Eoghan Mullooly (1). Sub: Charlie Moynihan.

Club history was made once more last week with the fielding of a first ever under 17 team. They faced the formidable St. Francis team from Athlone in their first game and acquitted themselves well considering it was their first outing. The Athlone side were comfortable winners, but the Ballyboro lads will surely improve as the season progresses. The goal of the game was a real cracker scored by Eimhin Farrell. Team: Byron Duignan, Edgars Veinbergs, Bryan Mullooly, Ciaran O’Dowd, Conor Lyons, Noah Comher, Ryan Byrne, Jack Brogan, Paul Lee, Eimhin Farrell, Matthew Heneghan. Subs: Jack McGloin, Matthew Browne.

Despite Oisin Dillon helping himself to 4 goals the under 12 team could not get the better of Killoe Celtic. Fielding somewhat understrength the team performed well in a closely contested first half, however the Killoe boys were on top in the second period, and they prevailed on a 7-4 scoreline. Ballyboro: Stephen Farrell, Aleysha Kaya, Darragh Donlon, Josh Curran, Ferat Pulchu, Jack Cassidy, Alfie Brehon, Hayden Smyth, Oisin Dillon. Sub Miko Woloweic.

The club wishes its three representatives on the Longford League panel, Jack Casey, David Cox, and Anthony Cox, the very best of luck as they embark on their Kennedy Cup campaign with an away fixture to the Wexford League at the weekend.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club

Under 17 Hard luck to the team and panel who were defeated in the U17 Shield Final on Sunday last by St. Dominick’s in Pearse Park.

Good Luck We wish the senior club the very best at the weekend in their senior championship on Saturday next at Pearse Park at 4.30pm when they take on Dromard in the final game.  Following their victory at the weekend the Junior team have now qualified for the semi-final.

Well done to the Ladies on winning their opening championship game at the weekend.

U13’s our U13’s will be playing Grattan Óg in Dunbeggan at 6pm this Wednesday. On Saturday next 3rd October at 2pm in Clonbonny we play against Ballymahon Forgney Carrick Sarsfields.

Year end: Last week I jumped the gun in naming Saturday 2nd October as the date for the year end celebrations for the club. Alas, the date clashed with many other events and has had to be put back to the end of October.
