Lanesboro Ballyleague notes

The marriage took place in St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro on Saturday 28th May of Ashley Dennigan, daughter of Mike and Mary Dennigan, Mahoraveen and Damien Forkin, son of Christy and the late Phil Forkin, Derrinabrock, Cloontia, Co. Mayo. Maid of honour was Karina Dennigan, sister of the bride and the bridesmaids were Deborah O’Hara and Niamh Masterson both friends of the bride. Best man was Adrian Forkin, brother of the groom and the Groomsmen were Declan Davey and Tomás Mahon both friends of the groom. The Pageboys were Mikey Dennigan, cousin of the groom and Aaron Neilan nephew of the groom. Flower girl was Rosie Kearney cousin of the bride.

The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Joseph Gavigan, Kilmovee assisted by Fr. Turlough Baxter Killashee/Lanesboro. The wedding reception took place in the Shearwater Hotel, Ballinasloe. We wish the happy couple many years of wedded happiness.

The unexpected death took place at Mullingar Regional Hospital on Sunday 29th May of Betty Banahan, Cappagh, Curraghroe. Betty was predeceased not six months ago by her late husband Johnny and by her grandson Joey and great grandson Cody. Betty a native of Four-Mile-House will always be remembered as a big hearted and kind lady. She was a wonderful conversationalist and her house was always an open house where her welcoming and warm nature was always to the fore. Betty was a very religious lady whose faith meant everything to her. She was a wonderful friend and neighbour and her passing will leave a great emptiness in the hearts and minds of everyone that had the pleasure to know her. It was fitting that Betty had a great love of music and song as her heart was forever filled with happiness.

Betty reposed at Smyth’s Funeral Home on Thursday last. Her remains were removed on Friday to St. Mary’s Church, Ballagh for the Mass of the Resurrection. Following Mass, Betty was laid to rest in Cloontuskert Cemetery. To her daughters Ann, Elizabeth, Cathy, Majella, sons Martin, John, Noel, Timothy, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Defibrillator Group Training

An AED is an Automated External Defibrillator. It is a portable, simple to use, computerised device. When someone suffers a sudden cardiac arrest it delivers a shock to the heart to allow it to resume its normal rhythm.

An AED checks the heart’s rhythm and it automatically recognises if there is a life threatening rhythm. Once detected the AED delivers a shock to stun the heart returning it to its normal rhythm.

The local defibrillator group is actively seeking new people in the Kilgefin, Ballyleague, Cashel, Killashee and Rathcline Lanesboro areas to become competent in the use of the Defibrillator. The group are also looking to retrain and refresh those that have already completed the course.

If you are interested please leave your name and phone number with Martina O’Brien personally in the shop or by phoning 086 3858934 or

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Tom and Margaret Nohilly and their family Ruth, Hugh, Miriam and Colm, Rathcline Road on the death of Tom’s brother Johnny, Cummer, Tuam, Co. Galway who died on Friday 3rd June.

Your support required

The importance of defibrillators in the general area cannot be overstated. The lives it can save and has done in previous times are well documented. Over the time of the Covid restrictions the opportunity to raise funds for the replacement of batteries and pads as well as funding needed to replace and upgrade defibrillators could not take place.

Now an appeal for essential funding is being made and the group is appealing to your generosity to ensure all the upgrades and replacements can take place.

If you wish to contribute we ask that you donate by leaving money in an envelope marked with your name into Martina O’Brien at the Corner Shop.

Cemetery Sunday

We welcome back Cemetery Sundays to the parish and as usual the first celebration of the lives of those buried in Rathcline Cemetery will take place on Sunday 3rd July at 6pm. Thank You

Our Big Toddle for Barnardos which was held on Friday 27th May by Lanesboro Ballyleague Preschool on the Green was a huge success. The children’s enjoyment of the walk was heightened by the presence of of the Lanesboro Community College students and teachers who took a break from their sports day to clap and cheer the little ones on. The weather was beautiful and the children wore their little super hero masks with pride and some of them sang songs as they walked. A whole lap of the track was completed without any mishaps or accidents before returning to the preschool where a well deserved treat was enjoyed by all.

The sum of €1235 was raised by the children for Barnardos. A big thank you to everyone. This was a terrific example of children helping children in need.
