What a Day
The welcome back day of BnM & ESB Recollection and Reconnection Day held in Lanesboro Parish Hall was an outstanding success. It was very fitting that the event took place this weekend as on Wednesday of this week 30th September at the end of the workday the gates of the Mount Dillon works will close for the final time and the workers from the workshop will be deployed to the Blackwater works.
The day was organised by a small core group of Oonagh Casey, Sharon Brady and Joe O’Brien with great assistance from local librarian Amy O’Sullivan with the idea of welcoming back and remembering former workers from Bord na Mona and ESB their input and the input of their families in our local communities was immense during the times of both companies situated in Lanesboro. The concept of the day was brought up a time ago by former BnM apprentice of the 60’s Harry Hennessy, now living in Kildare, and cemented by the huge reaction of former Green estate neighbours Cecil Keaveney and Richard (Dick) Farrelly’s photographs.
The day began dull and wet but by opening time in the hall it was brighter it was getting as the morning went on. Right from the opening time of 10am people began to arrive and peruse the vast array of photographs, meet and chat with other former workmates of both companies. It set the tone for the day and the fact that the supper room was fitted out and excellent refreshments served by Stephen and Tina Dowd meant that conversations could carry on in a very comfortable environment.
Throughout the day people kept arriving in big numbers and the memories continued to flow. It was great to see so many coming back to Lanesboro to remember their time working and their family involvement with BnM & ESB as well as growing up and getting their schooling in the local schools. A huge number travelled from all parts the country to be part of the day with Barney Carberry even travelling from Canada to be with us and it was even great to see Paudie Reilly with us from England.
This was a most unforgettable day for everyone and the adding of yesterday memories to their working memories of Lanesboro will live a long time in a huge number of families. It was a unique community event that remembered the memory of all our former residents and former workers
The event was made easier to organise by the support of Bord na Mona and ESB who paid for the organising of the day and to whom we must be most to grateful to for their backing. Both companies helped to make this a most outstanding day for all their past workers that and their families that attended.
A very big thank you to the several hundred that attended and that made it a very special day for them and for Lanesboro. We would also like to thank local lady Maireád Cleary and her Virgin Media TV crew for their coverage of the event that was televised on 5.30pm on Saturday.
We fondly remember the memory of all those that worked in both Bord na Mona and ESB that have passed away and we hope that were all looking down and enjoying all those remembering them and their time here.
The day would not have been so successful if not for all the photographs and memorabilia given to us by so many to put on display and to all of them we are extremely grateful.

Book Launch on Thursday
This Thursday 1st October we will see the launch of a new book relating to ESB Lanesborough Power Station ‘The PEOPLE who powered it” by Brendan Whitty and John Loughlin. The launch will take place in the Parish Hall at 12 noon and everyone is welcome to attend. I am reliably informed that this will be an exciting pictorial and historical look at the workers over the years that made the Power Station the great success that it was and this is an occasion not to be missed. This book along with it preceding book with be a lasting legacy to many if not all the workers that worked in Lanesboro Power Station since the mid 1950’s
With the title “ESB Lanesborough Station the people who powered it”, the book is the work of authors Brendan Whitty and John Loughlin and it recalls what life was like in the old power station which shut down in 2004.
It steers clear of the complexities of engineering and technology involved in power production and concentrates instead on the people who made the station what it was.
At the heart of the book is a remarkable photographic record, drawing extensively on the vast archive assembled by Brendan Whitty during his lifetime in the station. His photographs, together with images and contributions from former colleagues and friends, paint a picture of life inside the workplace and some of the social life attached to the station. Lanesborough station was held in very high regard in ESB due to its very high reliability and efficiency, and won many awards for excellence throughout its long life. The station had a unique working environment and staff took great pride in their station. The book is intended as a tribute to all who worked there, celebrates their achievements and preserves their memories for future generations.
Gates close for last time
Another part of the history of the community and wider community this week will bring a lot of sadness to us all with the closure of the workshop at the Mount Dillon Works on the Longford Road. Since the 50’s we have seen generations of workers and in some cases their families go through the workshop. The legacy and the memories they have left with us will live forever along with their fellow workers that worked on the bog. It would be right and fitting that the history of the people that worked for Bord na Mona locally should be recorded for posterity and for the future generation that will not see the boglands and Bord na Mona as we have over the past number of years. We definitely should be left with a lasting written memory of all the workers for now and the future generations. A very special thank you to all those that worked there for the memories they created as one former worker said to me at the exhibition on Saturday “the Bord gave us a great life and lifestyle”
Award winning Regina Donnellan
Many congratulations to Regina Donnellan, owner of LanesBrew Coffee on the Main Street who won the Established Businesswoman of the Year award at the Network Ireland National Businesswoman Awards at the awards presentation evening at the Galmont Hotel in Galway on Friday 18th September.
This is a terrific acknowledgement of the success and hard work put into the business by Regina and her staff. From the very beginning it was shoulder to the wheel and the hard work has really paid off and it is brilliant to see the business on the Main St. so busy so much of the time and going from strength to strength. It is an award so fully deserved.
All-Star Nomination
Many congratulations to St. Faithleach’s and Roscommon senior football captain Diarmuid Murtagh on his nomination for a football All-Star award. This is Diarmuid’s second nomination as he was also nominated in 2024 and it is a nomination that is thoroughly deserved. His displays with the Roscommon team as a player and captain were outstanding where he scored freely and proved himself a great leader of men.

Hazel Johnston visits her alma mater
Hazel Johnston, daughter of Ronnie and Helen Johnston, Rathcline Road was back in recent times visiting her alma mater, Lanesboro Community College to have a chat with students about her experience through the Apprenticeship pathway. Hazel has progressed career in a hugely significant way since leaving Lanesboro Community college where she is working as an Automation Engineer with hands-on experience in PLCs, industrial robotics, 3D Printing, vision systems, validation, and Industry 4.0 advanced manufacturing. She was announced in 2023 at Ireland’s first ever female apprentice Ireland’s Generation Apprenticeship National Apprentice of the Year award and since then has gone on to achieve First Class Honours as Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Advanced Manufacturing Engineering at MTU and followed her development completing a Masters in Equipment Systems Engineering Apprenticeship Equipment Systems Engineering in UL. Already at this early stage of her young life Hazel has built herself a hugely impressive CV and we wish her continued success in the future.

St. Mary’s Secondary School Ballyleague
Over the past number of weeks during the collection of photos and memorabilia there was great talk with a number of people about St. Mary’s Secondary School in Ballyleague. Fr Tonra and Fr. Foy were the leading figures in the school where many remarkable results and achievements were recorded.
I was also told that the school had a blazer and a crest. I would be particularly interested in finding out the number of years that it was in Ballyleague and if possible to get a roll of the students that attended a list of the teachers and a copy of the crest.
It would be a very interesting history for our community to have and to make sure that we never ever forget the enormous successes of the students and its contribution and impact in our community.

Recognised as the event of the year the PTAA Annual Dinner Dance will take place in the Rustic Inn, Abbeyshrule on Friday 16th October. The music will be provided by the very popular Seamus Farrell. Amanda’s Camino Challenge
Amanda Wallace, daughter of Paddy and Helen (nee Gill) Wallace, Curraghroe, is raising funds by doing a Camino Challenge to raise funds for the Irish Hospice Foundation. Posters with a QR code are to be seen on many businesses local and you are asked to scan the code and make a donation towards her fundraising goal of €2,000.
Every donation, no matter the amount, helped provide vital hospice care and support for families across Ireland.
Remembering
On the Main Street and running a thriving laundrette business we fondly remember Helmut and Rosemary Fuchs before they went back to England to be close to their family. In recent times both of them passed away and on Saturday last their family came together for the spreading of their ashes at Barley Harbour. Barley Harbour was very special for them as it was there that they always launched their boat from for their fishing expeditions.

Attic House Colour Run
The Longford Town Teen Project is hosting the Attic House 5Km Colour Run in the Albert Reynolds Peace Park on Sunday 11th October starting at 12 noon. This year the run is taking place to raise funds for Cian’s Kennels – Cian’s Kennels is a charity that allows hospitalised kids to have their dogs by their side for that extra dose of comfort and joy and we all can appreciate the magnificent work that Cian’s Kennels does.

Afternoon of Prayer
Achonry and Elphin Dioceses’ Apostolic Workers will hold an afternoon of prayer on Saturday, 10th October at Donamon Castle, Co. Roscommon, commencing at 2pm. Combo fit class with Regina
The Combo Fit class continues on Thursday’s in St. Marys Hall, Lanesboro. 7.30pm.. The class will incorporate low impact Pilates Movements, using body weight, light hand weights, resistance bands. This will improve posture, balance, bone density, and will enhance joint mobility.

The draw for the club 50/50 draw took place on Monday night last 21st September was for a pool that amounted to €797. The winning ticket was in the name of the Shane Nolan. As usual the winning cheque will be left in O’Brien’s for collection and can be usually collected on Wednesday evenings.

Lanesboro Garda Station
Lanesboro Garda Station has just posted a notice telling of its opening times where the station will have a member of the force in attendance for the public. Lanesboro station will be open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9am to 11am. The station will be open at those times unless the local Garda is dealing with a situation that requires their attendance.
Co. Longford Citizens Advice Centre
Co. Longford Citizens Information Service has recently been restructured and is currently under new management.
They continue to provide free, impartial, and confidential information, advice, and advocacy services to the public on social services, rights, and entitlements. The range of areas covered by the citizens information centre are extremely wide including social welfare rights and entitlements and other social issues such as employment, health services, housing, education, family matters and consumer rights, all where people need access to information.
The way people access the services changed during Covid and now they currently deal with a large number of queries over the telephone, however, they continue to provide our drop-in times and welcome people to their face-to-face service five mornings a week from the Longford office. The services are provided by experienced trained Information Officers who are there to help you.
The centre is located on level 1 within Longford Shopping Centre and direction can be obtained at the reception desk from Monday to Friday from 9.30am until 5.00pm. The office closes for lunch from 1pm until 2pm.
Gambling Anonymous
Meetings for those with problems with gambling take place in in the Family Centre, Longford (at the back of St. Mel’s Cathedral) on Tuesdays at 8pm.
Support Group
Relatives and friends of anyone who has an alcoholic problem are welcome to attend meetings in the Family Centre at the back of St. Mel’s Cathedral. The meetings take place every Tuesday evenings at 7pm.

Support line for older people
ALONE manage a national support line and additional support for older people who have concerns or are still facing difficulties relating to Covid-19. The Holy Rosary: Every Saturday at 12 noon for the month of October the Holy Rosary will be said at the statue of Our Lady of Fatima in Cloontuskert cemetery. October is the month of the Rosary and everyone is welcome to go along and join in.
New Hall Caretaker sought : We thank Liam Garvey for the wonderful service he rendered for the past number of months. We are currently looking for a new caretaker for Ballyleague Hall. It is a part-time position involving a few hours a week. The role entails taking hall bookings; setting up for events, ordering oil fills etc. Assistance would be given to whoever takes over the role. Station Masses: The Station Masses will commence in September. The Station Masses were a great success in February and we are looking forward to a greater celebration in September. At Curraghroe Church on Thursday 1st October at 7pm the station Mass will take place for the townlands of Curraghroe, Mount Dillon, Erra and Drinagh.
On Friday next 2nd October in Ballyleague Church the Station Mass for the townlands of Gortgallon, Ballyglass, Cloontuskert Ernagh, and Abbey will take place at 7pm.
