Death
It was with the greatest sympathy that we had to say goodbye to the oldest lady in the Rathcline Parish. Loretto Cooney at the tender age of 96 passed away at Our Lady’s Manor, Edgeworthstown. Born in neighbouring parish of Killashee Loretto moved to her new home in Lehery when she married local man Leo Cooney. Leo passed away in 1974 leaving Loretto with three young children. She bravely reared her three children while all the time working the farm and maximising her work. Her lifelong values were family, faith, education and she lived her life by those values to the very end – she was very proud of the life achievements of her children and grandchildren. For all the time consuming work at home Loretto found time for her many interests Bridge, Art, Active Age, Baking for the county market, embroidery and dress making. She was a woman who had great loyalty to local businesses and her community and encouraged support at every hands turn. She was a very independent lady and continued to drive right into her 90’s. In her early life Loretto work in fashion shops in both Longford and Roscommon, this was clearly seen by her style in clothing. She was woman that loved to have a chat and ramble and many a long chat we had together. Loretto was a lifelong member of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association.
Loretto’s remains reposed in Our Lady’s Manor, Edgeworthstown on Thursday and was removed to St. Mary’s Church on Friday last. Following Mass of the Resurrection Loretto was laid to rest in Rathcline Cemetery. To her son Albert, daughters Loretto and Edel, grandchildren, special friend and cousin Mary Burke, relatives and friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Prepare, St. Patrick’s Day is coming
After a few years break there is now great excitement at the announcement of the forthcoming St. Patrick’s Day parade. Now is the time to get your creative teams together to build your floats for the biggest celebration of the year. Listening to people commenting they are really excited at the prospect of preparing for the Parade. Let us hope that we will once again regain the title of the best parade in the area.
Prior to Covid there was a ticket sale for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, alas Covid scuppered all the plans but the committee assures everyone that had bought tickets that their tickets are good for this year’s draw
Sympathy
Would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Claire and Chris Webb and family, Main Street on the death of Claire’s mother Mrs Kathleen Hickey, Richmond Harbour, Clondra on Wednesday 18th January. Kathleen’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Brendan’s Church, Clondra followed by cremation at Lakelands Crematorium on Thursday last.
Lanesboro ICA
The Lanesboro Guild of the ICA meets on the second Wednesday night in the Parish Hall from 8pm to 9.30pm. The Guild would like to welcome anybody to their meetings and to become members. Refreshments will be served after each meeting and there will be an interesting speaker each night.
€11,700 to be won
The Lanesboro Tidy Towns Lottery on Tuesday 24th January stood at €11,700. This is a fantastic amount of money to be won for just €2 or 3 tickets for €5.
The numbers drawn on Tuesday 17th January for a jackpot of €11,600 were 3, 13, 16 and 28 and there was no winner of the jackpot. The winner of the €50 prize was Jay Flynn c/o XLNTEE and the three €20 winners were Mary Tiernan, Ferefad, Longford, Pauline Casey, Lehery and Molly, Lucy and Emma Farrell, c/o Yacht Bar.

Local involved in Roscommon’s Republican Dead
The sale of the Roscommon Republican Dead continues to be a hugely popular and successful book written by local man Henry Owens. This is Henry’s follow up to the incredibly successful ‘Sliabh Bán’. The new book documenting all the people who died as a result of the Troubles between the years 1917 and 1923 in County Roscommon is selling very fast.
One of those featured in the book is local man John Scally, Gallagh, Ballyleague who was a member of the Cloontuskert Company, 3rd Battalion who was killed by a booby trap bomb. At the time of his death he was 31 years of age.
The book is on sale in O’Brien’s at €16 and can be posted with the additional p&p. A limited number of Sliabh Bán books are still available.
Shannon Gaels AGM
Last year proved to be a great year of growing and development for our club and the club will review the year and plot a path forward at the Shannon Gaels AGM 2023 that will take place on this Friday 27th Jan at 8:00pm in the Clubhouse. We will have by then have details of Proposed Competitions and Youth Fixtures for 2023 that we can also discuss on the night. We would love to see all parents, newcomers to the parish, those with an interest in underage football promotion and those that not been involved with the club so far attend. The development of all our young people is our primary aim and we would love if you can attend and support the efforts of the club to further grow in 2023.
It would be great if you could make every effort to attend as we are looking forwarding to another exciting year ahead. Thanks very much

The under 16s recent run of good form continued on Saturday last when they had an impressive 3-0 win over Abbey Rovers. Ballyboro always had the edge over their Phelan goals allied to a clinical Jack Casey finish secured the points for Ballyboro. The under 8s had an enjoyable tussle with Stonepark. Ballyboro were ably represented by James Linnane, Ryan Molloy, Pat Glynn, Tom Glynn, Tiernan Hanley, Tomas Kenny, Leo Donnellan, Philip Kucier, Joe Gilmore, Aaron Raftery, Elliott Casserly, Tadhg Rowan, Adam Farrell, Kyle Carberry, Eoin Farrell, Lorcan O’Reilly, Harper Horohoe, Willow Horohoe, Donncha Keenan, Luke Hassett, Patrick Linnane.
In the Combined Counties Longford Area Cup an inspired second half display by Ballyboro saw them safely through to the second round at the expense of Colmcille. A superb Jack Murray hat trick and goals from Jordan Donlon (2), and Jack’s father Derek was enough to secure a 6-3 win. The winning margin slightly flatters Ballyboro as goalkeeper Mark Tarmey made two terrific penalty saves. The under 14s performed very well against old rivals Melview in the first half and they were a tad unfortunate to trail by a goal at the interval, having squandered a few goal scoring opportunities. However the second half was a different story as Melview dominated proceedings and were convincing winners. The under 14 girls were in sparkling form when they accounted for Newtown. The girls won 2-0 in what was a very impressive all round display with the defence particularly outstanding. Goalscorers were Sarah Healy and Emma Dowd. Ballyboro under 12 girls team gave their best performance of the season so far with the whole squad contributing to an excellent 7-1 win over neighbours Kenagh United. Hat tricks from Faye Hogan and Hannah Farrell and a goal from Saoirse Feeney accounted for Ballyboro’s total. Squad: Saoirse Feeney, Saoirse Dillon, Hannah Farrell, Chloe Kilcoyne, Rosie Farrell, Kallie Herbert, Laoise Farrell, Ava Donohoe, Niamh Casey, Pippa O’Shea, Emma Hopkins, Sinead Murray, Ellen Cox, Emma Farrell, Zoe Hassett, Penelope Kennedy, Katie Sweeney, Faye Hogan. The club is grateful to Eamonn Farrell who generously sponsored a set of training tops for the under 12 girls.
Fixtures: Saturday 28th. The under 9s will be involved in blitz action with Gaels United in Drumlish at 10am. The under 11s play Gaels United Maroon at 12 noon at the Drumlish Astro. The under 12 girls play Newtown FC in Newtownforbes, 10am kick off on Sunday 29th January. The under 14s are away to Spartac Granard, 11.30am start while the under 12s play Newtown FC Blues at 1pm in Newtownforbes.
Power Station Memories
Thank you to everyone that has so far got in touch with the school and Lee Williamson.
In association with Creative Schools, the Arts Council Dublin, and Shuttermaniac Productions Lanesboro they are looking for ESB-related stories and memories in order to produce an engaging short film as part of a Creative Schools Film Project. Perhaps there’s an endearing or funny story that you or a relative or neighbour remember at their time in and around the ESB.
Permission has now been granted for the taking down of Lanesboro Power Station. The pupils of Lanesboro National School, a school that has existed in the shadow of the station for the lifetime of the different stages of the stations are undertaking a project and they need any help you can give them.
The kids at Lanesboro will be presenting this story on film so please keep it short and entertaining if possible.

Not only will this be a school project but also a part of the history of what stood in Lanesboro and gave so much employment since the mid 50s.
Leitrim’s Republican History
The recently enlarged Leitrim Republican History 1900-2000 has just become available in Lanesboro. Leitrim people have a renowned history in the involvement of its people in the Republican History of its county and Ireland and this book make for excellent reading. Cormac Ó Súilleabháin is the author of this fine book.

Lanesboro in the War of Independence and after – Book still available
As the decades of centenaries come to a close, it is good to know that copies of the book, Longford’s Republican Story 1900 – 2000, are still available.
The Lanesboro/Cashel area was a hotbed of activity in both War of Independence and Civil War and this book has recorded for ever more the bravery and courage of the men and women of Longford in the fight for freedom. It lists all of the men and women from this area who took part in those conflicts. Longford’s Republican Story is a unique and exceptional book that will never be equalled and will be in great demand while it remains in print. We understand the author, Seán Ó Súilleabháin, may give a talk in Lanesboro in the New Year on the republican history of the area. Copies of Longford’s Republican Story 1900- 2000, with almost 600 pages, and costing €35, are available in O’Brien’s, Lanesboro.

Old Days, Old Ways
Paddy Egan’s new book Old Day, Old Ways continues to be a runaway success. The book is a nostalgic look back at a way of life in Ireland over a century ago. The book is true nostalgia for the older generations that remember the days he writes about and for the younger generations an essential read telling the stories of traditional farming ways, old cures, tradition and sayings. It is a book that is very well worth the very reasonable price of €10. The book can be bought locally in O’Brien’s.

Smart Recovery
SMART recovery is an evidence based addiction recovery support group where participants learn self-empowering techniques to aid their recovery by overcoming addictive behaviour.

Clothes Collection
Ballagh NS is holding a clothing collection on Friday next 27th January. All funds raised from this clothes collection will go directly to the school. If you have any unwanted clothing, footwear, belts, handbags, hats, linens or textiles, please put them in bags and bring them to the school in the coming days. Bags may also be left outside the school on Friday morning of the collection prior to 9.30am. All donations will be gratefully received.

St. Mary’s Church
The Parish Hub: Over the past few months we have been developing the Parish House as a resource centre with the establishment of the new Parish Office, Meeting Rooms, Resource Library and Oratory. Already, there have been a number of local gatherings and the plan is to make the house available for more in the coming weeks. The church hopes that it will become a resource centre for the whole community to utilise.
