Lanesboro Ballyleague notes

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Word is that there is a great deal of endeavour taking place in many places planning their floats for the return of St. Patrick’s Day Parade to Lanesboro and Ballyleague. Great credit is really due to everyone for their efforts and the committee for their work in preparing for the Parade.

For further information or application forms please contact Teresa Costello or Freda Connaughton.

Annual Lourdes Collection

The annual Lourdes Church Gate will take place at all Masses on Saturday 11th and Sunday12th next. Your generosity year on year has helped greatly in sending people with special needs to Lourdes. The pilgrims benefit greatly from this pilgrimage and this can only happen for so many by your generosity.

Lanesboro 73 Bridge Club

Congratulations to Mary Fallon, Goretti Kenny, Philomena Walsh, Mary Farrell members of the 1973 Bridge Club and the Lough Ree 2000 club on their great win in the Regional Pairs Intermediate A. Also, to Joan Donnellan with her Longford Club partners Una Flynn, Olive Kilbane, and John Kiernan whom came first in the Regional Masters. Good Luck to both teams going forward to the National Finals.

Support for the Parade

In an effort to defray costs for the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day parade the committee is holding a raffle and the support of our entire community is encouraged. This year the draw will take place in Adie’s bar on St. Patrick’s night. Tickets are priced at €2 each or 3 for €5. There will be five prizes of €100 and you may be one of the lucky five.

Tickets can be bought in the local bars, supermarkets, O’Brien’s and from committee members.

Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club

Did you know that our local Lough Ree Sub-Aqua club was founded in 1993 to help people become divers to carry out searches of lakes and rivers in the Longford and Midlands area?

The club also has its social side with dives both in Ireland and abroad from time to time. It is a club that encourages participation and they would love to hear you expressing your interest in becoming a member of their diving family. The club has its own dedicated clubhouse in the car park.

Congratulation to Adam, Kenneth, Nicole, Peter, Ryan and Shane on all passing their pool snorkel test.  All their hard work over the last number of months has really paid off.  Pool training continues every Thursday night at 9pm sharp.

Death

It was with great sadness we learned of the death on Wednesday 1st February at Innis Ree Lodge Nursing Home, Ballyleague of Annie Ross, Church View. Annie, nee Casey, was predeceased by her husband Barney and sons David and Gerard. She was a native of Newtowncashel from where she immigrated to England. It was there that she met the love of her life Barney and after a time moved back home to Ireland and for the past 60 years she spent it with us in the parish of Rathcline. Annie was a very warm and welcoming lady where the kettle was forever on the boil and everyone was entertained with a cup of tea and a chat. For Annie family was always first and foremost and she basked in the glory of their many successes in life. Annie would always be seen as the rock of the family encouraging all members of her family to greater things. She was a woman that loved to read especially detective stories as much as following the TV detective programmes such as Murder She Wrote. Annie loved her home in Church View as it was close to the church as she was a very religious lady; a regular to daily Mass and recited the Rosary daily. She was a wonderful neighbour and friend and she will be sadly missed by everyone that knew her warm and kind spirit.

Annie’s remains reposed in Farrell Funeral Home on Thursday before her removal to St. Mary’s Church. On Friday her Funeral Mass took place before she was laid in Clonbonny.

To her daughter Lil, sons Brian and Paul, her sister Kathy, Mary, Martha, Rita and Philomena, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

€11,900 to be won

The Lanesboro Tidy Towns Lottery on Tuesday 7th February stood at €11,900. This is a fantastic amount of money to be won and tickets cost just €2 or 3 tickets for €5.

The numbers drawn on Tuesday 31st January for a jackpot of €11,800 were 4, 13, 23 and 29; there was no winner of the jackpot. The winner of the €50 prize was Jake, Kyle, and Lauren Rice and the three €20 winners were Mary Rhatigan c/o Yacht Bar, Fiona c/o Mags and Martin Tarmey Anrattabeg

The Lanesboro Tidy Towns committee would like to thank you for your generosity and your support is ensuring that Lanesboro continues to look beautiful even in the depths of winter.

Local involved in Roscommon’s Republican Dead

The sale of the Roscommon Republican Dead continues to be a hugely popular and successful book written by local man Henry Owens. This is Henry’s follow up to the incredibly successful ‘Sliabh Bán’. The new book documenting all the people who died as a result of the Troubles between the years 1917 and 1923 in County Roscommon is selling very fast.

One of those featured in the book is local man John Scally, Gallagh, Ballyleague who was a member of the Cloontuskert Company, 3rd Battalion who was killed by a booby trap bomb. At the time of his death he was 31 years of age.

There are a very limited number of books on sale in O’Brien’s at €16 and they can be posted with the additional p&p. A limited number of Sliabh Bán books are also still available.

Power Station Memories

Have you given your memories of the Power Station yet? The production team is still looking for people who have not come forward with stories to tell and memories of the power station

If you think you do have a wee anecdotal nugget, please get in touch with Lee Williamson, school principal Claire Murphy or teacher Niamh Rowan in Lanesborough NS.

Not only will this be a school project but also a part of the history of what stood in Lanesboro and gave so much employment since the mid 50s.

Weekly Card Game

The results from last Sunday night’s weekly card game held in Lanesboro Parish Hall game held on Sunday night last 5th February are: 1st Tom Rooney & Basil Mitchell. 2nd Pat & Geraldine Green. Leitrim’s Republican History

The recently enlarged Leitrim Republican History 1900-2000 has just become available in Lanesboro. Leitrim people have a renowned history in the involvement of its people in the Republican History of its county and Ireland and this book make for excellent reading. Cormac Ó Súilleabháin is the author of this fine book.

The book is for sale in O’Brien’s priced €35.

Lanesboro in the War of Independence and after – Book still available

As the decades of centenaries come to a close, it is good to know that copies of the book, Longford’s Republican Story 1900 – 2000, are still available and the supply is becoming limited.

The Lanesboro/Cashel area was a hotbed of activity in both War of Independence and Civil War and this book has recorded for ever more the bravery and courage of the men and women of Longford in the fight for freedom. It lists all of the men and women from this area who took part in those conflicts. Longford’s Republican Story is a unique and exceptional book that will never be equalled and will be in great demand while it remains in print. We understand the author, Seán Ó Súilleabháin, may give a talk in Lanesboro in the New Year on the republican history of the area. Copies of Longford’s Republican Story 1900- 2000, with almost 600 pages, and costing €35, are available in O’Brien’s, Lanesboro.
