Race Day

All roads lead to the world renowned Galway Races starting on Monday 27th July ant continuing until Sunday 2nd August. As is now the norm the Rathcline GAA club host a race night on the opening evening. The event continues to grow in popularity and this year is no different judging by the interest already shown in the event. It is a fund raiser for the club but first and foremost it is the opportunity for the community to go to the races in the company of friends and neighbours and sample the Galway races in a state of luxury.

Tickets for the races are prices at €100 each and this includes a view overlooking the finish line with spectacular views of the Galway countryside , a four course meal, one free drink, tipsters in the pavilion, bar facilities, tote in the pavilion and after meal entertainment. Tickets are available from Sarah Kearney (086) 4051865, Alan Fayne (087) 1157806 or Gerald Farrell (086) 8745180.

Go along and have a fabulous evening as an opportunity as this only comes once a year and it is an occasion not to be missed.

The Green – a living history

May I make a correction to the last notes on the Green – Tom Finnegan 63 was the first local man from the parish of Rathcline to live on the Green. I got many comments questioning me on my assertion in my previous note. I thank everyone to their questioning of me and encourage your comments to continue when they have anything to offer on the history of their former homes on the Green and indeed all that spent many happy days playing there.

Mary O’Halloran (nee Donoghue 7 and now 36) recounted how all the youngsters from the Green, town and parish used to go down and swim in the sand beds – which to the younger generation was an area 100 yds. past the small harbour on the Longford side – we all thought we were at the seaside with the feel of sand at our feet. Mary remembered John Gill’s quarry, just below the Green, also known as the small quarry, was also another place for the lads to congregate to play cowboys and Indians while the girls played house.

Going back to the school roll a few more name that may bring back memories to our readers – Miceál mac Sitigh, whose father was Liam and he was from Limerick. Then we had Sean Reynolds, Kevin Reynolds, Jim Reynolds, Brendan Reynolds all from no. 2, Paudie O’Reilly, Myles O’Reilly, Malachy O’Reilly all 58, Paul Dalton 37 before moving to 24, , Brendan Finnegan 63, Mattie Masterson 44, Jimmy Hurson 64 and Michael Kiernan 38.

Two Provinces Triathlon Race Report

Lanesboro Triathlon Club once again hosted the ever popular ‘Two Provinces Sprint Triathlon’ on Saturday July 11th. It was the fifth sprint triathlon race hosted by the Lanesboro club in as many years with over 220 adults and 110 children turning out to compete in the event. The day was a huge success with competitors from all corners of the country travelling to Lanesboro to take part.

Conditions not as favourable as previous years added to the challenge for those taking part, with choppy waters for the 750m swim and windy conditions on the 20km bike. But this didn’t stop the overall winner Darren Dunne from putting in an excellent finish time of 1:00:40, followed by Belpark’s Kevin Keane in a time of 1:02:40 and third place Cian O’Reilly of Virginia Tri Club finishing in 1:03:08. The ladies also put in fantastic performances on the day with Marie Boland, first overall lady finishing in 1:14:30 followed closely by Rachael Beck in 1:15:15 and Deirdre Fagan in 1:15:29.

First home for the local club was Ronie Masterson in a time of 1:18, also taking a prize for coming 2nd in her age category, while Colm McGarvey and Eamonn Farrell provided spectators with an entertaining sprint finish as they crossed the line together in a time of 1:22. Club member Frank O’Connor was also among the prize winners taking home the trophy for first in his age category. Well done also to Conor Walton who has made huge improvements since starting out in triathlon as he came 4th overall in the Junior Section in a very competitive field. The local club also took 2nd place in the relay section of the event, with Colm Daly and his team putting in a superb effort to bring home a trophy.

This year saw the introduction of two new events: AquaBike (a swim and a cycle) and Try-a-tri (a shorter swim followed by same cycle and run as the main race), which proved very popular among entrants. Congratulations to all those who took part in their first triathlon, hopefully the experience at Two Provinces encouraging them to take on more triathlons in the future.

Lanesboro Tri club also hosted the Two Provinces Kidathon with a field of 110 children taking part in the race making it one of the largest in the country. The kids were very competitive which may have had something to do with the ice creams being presented to each finisher.

The race could not run smoothly without the support and hard work of all the local clubs, societies, businesses and individuals and indeed our own triathlon club members.

As safety of competitors and spectators is paramount in such events, the most difficult job on the day fell to the local sub aqua club and kayakers.   Their professionalism and skills were evident as they watched over and supported the competitors during the swim part of the race during the breezy conditions.

Many local clubs and residents provided assistance on preparing the course, marshalling the race, handing out the plentiful refreshments and providing heartfelt encouragement to all partakers. It is wonderful to be part of such supportive community and Lanesboro Triathlon Club would like to thank all the following for putting on a display that has attracted many compliments and promises to return:

  • Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club
  • Vertical Kayakers
  • Cloontuskert Residents Association
  • Ballyleague Renewal
  • Lanesboro Tidy Towns
  • Lanesboro Badminton Club
  • St. Faithleach’s GAA club
  • Rathcline seniors, minor and ladies GAA clubs

  • Lough Ree Community Resource Co-op
  • An Garda Síochána

  • Longford and Roscommon Civil Defence
  • Members of Lanesboro Fire Brigade
  • Members of the Lanesboro Triathlon Club.

We are also most grateful for the support of the local residents, in particular those on Rathcline Road and on the Strokestown Road, as the race required road closures on both roads.

Similarly we would like to thank numerous local businesses who donated food, confectionary, building material and labour:

  • Cormac Hoare Building Contractors
  • McGowan Engineering
  • Brendan Keane Motor Repairs
  • Ward Bros Plant Hire Ltd
  • Ventura Marquee Hire
  • Casserley’s Spar
  • Joe and Martina O’Brien Shop
  • The Swan Tavern
  • SuperValu
  • Ciaran Mullooly
  • Michael Wall
  • Mullooly and Donohue Construction
  • PJ Maher
  • Basil Mitchell
  • Darin Sweeny

Crucial to the success of the race were the following sponsors:

  • Insuremyhouse.ie
  • Waterways Ireland
  • All Creatures Veterinary
  • Bid Management Services
  • Johnston’s Pharmacy
  • Ballygowan
  • Gourmet Fuel
  • Glancy’s Fruit & Veg
  • Tri & Run
  • Walkers
  • Robinson’s Fruit Shoot
  • Wheelworx
  • Club Orange
  • Fresh and Ready Veg
  • Dolan Foods
  • Glenisk Yogurts

We were delighted to have them on board as without their fantastic support, we could not possibly stage such a superb event.

Finally, we would like to give a special mention to the families of the race committee and thank them for their support and patience throughout the entire planning process which began during November 2014.

We look forward to hosting our Charity Swim on 3rd August with all funds raised going to St. Christopher’s, Longford and to the Roscommon Disability Support Group.

Tri Lanesboro Club notes

It was great sadness that we heard of the recent passing of Laura Cox, daughter of one of our club members, Seamus Cox. Lanesboro Tri Club would like to express its deepest sympathies to Seamus, Eileen, their family and friends. A minute’s silence was observed before the start of the Two Provinces Triathlon as a mark of respect. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam.

Well done to our club members who took on the challenging Middle Distance Triathlon in Athlone on Sun 5th July, especially to Gerry Lane who completed this distance for the first time, as part of his preparation for Ironman Wales in September. Also thanks to our club members who helped out by providing a water/feed station in Lanesboro for all the triathletes as they cycled the 90km route around Lough Ree.

Congratulations to Lanesboro Tri Club chairperson, James Gallagher, who recently participated in the Ironman distance swim in Tenby, Wales, as part of the Long Course Weekend. James had a superb swim finishing in a time of 1:26 a huge drop from previous time of 1:53. Well-done James.

Lanesboro Tri Club was well represented at the European Championships in Geneva recently as three members of the Sudway family, Marie, Ciaran and Fiachra all competed in the event. It was a great success for all, especially Marie who finished 7th in her age category. This was a fantastic achievement for Marie, making her one of the top 10 in Europe. Congratulations Marie.

Lough Ree AC

Last Saturday and Sunday saw the conclusion of the juvenile 2015 Track and Field season with Tullamore the venue. On Saturday Caoilinn Flood was our representative in the Girls U/13 High Jump and while she jumped to form jumping 1.20cm she did not figure in the placings. On Sunday Ryan Murray competed in the Boys U/18 discus achieving a very creditable 6th position.   Training continues for all our Community Games qualifiers on Wednesday evenings in Longford.

Five Year Tax Relief Forms

By filling in the new five year tax relief form now you will not be asked to do so again before 2020. Forms are available in the church porch and the completed form must be returned to the designated box in the church porch on or before 26th July.

Death

It is with great sadness that I relate to you the death at Inis Ree Nursing Home on Wednesday 1st July of Kitty Fallon. Kitty was a native of Lightfield, Newtowncashel and sister of a former resident on the Rathcline Road the late Jimmy Fallon. Kitty spent her life away working in Dublin and retired back to Lanesboro. She was a warm friendly woman who endeared herself to the local community upon arrival. She always had a great welcome for everyone and the warmth of her smile and appealing nature made her instantly part of our community. Kitty was an active member of the Active Age group and she was a daily communicant. Her presence in our community will be sadly missed. Her remains reposed at Farrell’s Funeral Home, Lanesboro on Thursday before the removal of her remains to St Mary’s Church. Following her Funeral Mass on Friday burial took place in Rathcline Cemetery. To her nieces Geraldine Skelly, Aughamore, Celine Hester Knock, Kathleen Farrell, Moher, nephew John L Farrell, Rathcline, her many other nieces and nephews, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Busy time for Lough Ree Sub Aqua

Lough Ree Sub Aqua as I have mentioned before offer a wide and varied service and the quality of their work cannot and will not ever be underestimated. We are privileged to have such a wonderful club on our doorstep.

We all know of the tragic loss of the three people out walking on the rocks at Baltimore, Co. Cork were swept into the sea by a freak wave a few weeks back. Barry Ryan, and Niamh O’Connor were found relatively quickly but locating Barry Davis Ryan son of Barry Ryan and boyfriend of Niamh O’Connor was not proving to be an easy task. For 10 days the search went on until the recovery of his body on the final dive of the 10th day.

Eight of the local Lough Ree Search and Rescue unit travelled to Cork for a number of days to assist in the search. It is testimony to the club that such a big number of club divers offered to make themselves available to a family deeply in need of support. As I said previously it is fabulous to have such a fabulous service available in our community.

Their job did not finish there as they were again in action on Saturday when they were part of the team supporting the triathlon for the swim – and that was some challenge on Saturday with the very breeze and inclement weather making it the hardest swim for the triathlon in many a year.

The members I am sure are enjoying a well-deserved rest after all their activities over the past two weeks.

The club asked to acknowledge people of Baltimore for their hospitality during what can only be described as a chaotic and sad time for all concerned.

They would like to offer their condolences to the family and friends of the Late Barry Davis Ryan, may he rest in peace
