Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
St. Patrick’s Day Parade Update
In line with the HSE’s Guidelines to call off all parades as well as many other events the organising committee of the Lanesboro Ballyleague St. Patrick’s Day Parade called off our St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
The committee would ask everyone that has been asked to sell tickets for them to continue to do so as the draw has been deferred and will now take place on Easter Sunday night. The committee urges everyone to support the draw.
Death
The entire area was shocked to learn of the death at University College Hospital, Galway on Friday 6th March of Paddy Neilan, Lough Ree Park, Ballyleague. Paddy a native of Castlecoote, Co. Roscommon came to reside amongst us when he was serving with the army in Longford. Paddy instantly became a big part of our community and he was very popular throughout. During his 20 years plus in the army Paddy qualified as a chef, a career he put to full use after retiring. Where does one start remembering Paddy? A loving and caring man to his wife and family who was hugely proud of the achievements of his children and grandchildren, a noted chef where nobody ever complained due his substantial meals, a wonderful friend to many, a character of note. He had a heart of gold and a man who was always ready to give a helping hand. He never like to see anyone down in themselves or in their luck and he would always lift one’s spirits whether with his caring and compassion manner or one of his legendary sayings – I am sure he is above in heaven wishing everyone to ’have a nice day’. Paddy will be sadly missed by everyone that knew him. His visits to us in the shop for a chat will be sadly missed where everything would undoubtedly get an airing. We will miss him greatly as the shop was always filled with great cheerfulness when he left. Paddy left a wonderful memory and that was clearly seen by the huge attendance at the reposing of his remains at his home in Lough Ree Park on Sunday, and again on Monday at the removal of his remains and Mass of the Resurrection at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague and again at his burial in Cloontuskert Cemetery.
We extend our sympathy to his wife Bernie, sons Darren, Patrick, Michael, daughters Michelle and Sarah, sisters Margaret, Kathleen, Evelyn and Chris and his brother Jim, relatives and a huge number of friends.
Éigse Peter Carberry
Pete Carberry was a legendary uilleann piper not only within Ireland but internationally. Pete lived in the Bord na Mona housing estate, Derryhaun outside of Lanesboro where his day job was with Bord na Mona. He was from a family renowned for the playing of Irish Music. The name Pete Carberry was synonymous with the playing of uilleann pipes where his skill and craft mesmerised everyone. Many of the extended Carberry family have followed in his footsteps and have formed an Irish music dynasty that has yet to be equalled.
The inaugural hosting of the Éigse Peter Carberry weekend took place during April 2019 in Lanesboro where the three generations of the Carberry family were joined for the weekend by some of Ireland’s foremost Irish musicians All through the weekend there were concerts, exhibitions, demonstrations and workshops as will be the case at this year’s event. Irish music will again overflow from St. Mary’s Hall, local hostelries and shops. The ambiance all over town will be terrific with the sounds of Irish traditional music spilling over from so many places.
Lanesboro, County Longford will more be the setting for the second hosting of the Éigse Peter Carberry weekend where once again a host of Ireland’s best traditional Irish musicians have committed to attending.
Éigse Peter Carberry will commence on Friday 24th April with the official opening ceremony in St. Mary’s Hall Lanesboro at 8pm and will continue through Saturday and Sunday with sessions, exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops throughout the weekend.
On Sunday in Ballyleague Hall the exciting Nóta Stóta will take place and it is a must for everyone to see and enjoy. Nóta Stóta is a group comprising renowned traditional musicians Conal Ó Gráda (flute, whistle, mouth organ) and Benny McCarthy (accordions, mouth organ) alongside inimitable puppeteer Des Dillon. The performance is entitled ‘Polkas, Puppets & Púcaí’ and is sure to produce some surprises as well as fantastic music.
You can keep up to date with all the upcoming events on the Facebook page Éigse Peter Carberry.
