Death
Losing a mother is always a very difficult thing but when the mother is just a few weeks short of 100 years old it is felt all the more poignant as was the case when we learned of the death of Margaret Brennan, KIlmacnanny, Curraghroe on Monday 24th August at Sonas Nursing Home, Cloverhill, Roscommon. Margaret a native of Annaduff in Co. Leitrim was predeceased over 30 years ago by her husband Michael, her daughter Mary, her infant son Patrick and sons-in-law Peter Gillooly and Mickie Walsh. Along with rearing a family of eight she found time to be a very active and creative lady; being a very active member of the Sliabh Bán Craft community where she was excellent in the creation of rushwork. With Margaret’s passing so too went almost 100 years of history and stories and she recalled many a great story looking back in the history and changes in Ireland over her lifetime. Up until recent years Margaret would be seen out and about on her bicycle and usually making her way to Curraghroe church. She was very devout in her faith and she was a regular reader at Mass right up until her health would no longer allow her. Her neighbourliness, helpfulness along with amiable personality always stood Margaret out as a lady of quality.
Margaret’s remains reposed at Leavy’s Funeral Home, Scramogue, on Wednesday last before the removal of her remains to St. Cecilia’s Church, Curraghroe. Following the Mass of the Resurrection on Thursday Margaret was laid to rest in Scramogue cemetery.
To her daughters Bríd, Cáit, Eileen, and Detta, her sons Stephen, PJ and Michéal, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.
Solstice Choir in Backstage Theatre.
Following on from their huge success in the Roscommon Arts Centre the Roscommon Solstice Choir will present “Songs that Built a Nation” in the Backstage Theatre Longford on Wednesday and Thursday, 9th and 10th September.
With a script by well-known Roscommon Playwright and Historian Tommy Murray the choir will present “Epic moments of Irish History as told in Ballads, Songs, Poems and Music”. Beginning with the United Irishmen Rebellion of 1798 the show tells the story of this traumatic and tumultuous time in our history up to and including the War of Independence 1920/21.
This show which has been described as “a very moving production, which immediately takes its place as one of the outstanding highlights of this choir’s distinguished ‘body of work’ is definitely not to be missed.

Manoeuvres at the Power Station
I have just received notice that there will once again be Defence Force Manoeuvres taking place at Lanesboro Power Station from Monday 14th to Wednesday 16th September. The 6th Battalion based in Custume Barracks Athlone will be the unit involved in these manoeuvres.
Similar to the previous manoeuvres there will be a good bit of noise coming from the area and there is no need for anyone to be alarmed.

We are delighted to announce that St. Mary’s Church; Lanesboro will host the Admission to Candidacy for the Permanent Diaconate on the Vigil Saturday Mass, on Saturday next 5th September at 6:30pm. This is an important step in the journey towards the Permanent Diaconate for three candidates: local man Steven Donohoe – Diocese of Ardagh & Clonmacnois Wilker Antonio Da Costa – Diocese of Achonry & Elphin and Richie O’Brien – Diocese of Achonry & Elphin.A
Steven Donohoe, Knock Manor and formerly of Rathcline Road, is son of Martin and Fiona Donohoe, Rathcline Road is married to Sarah Marie (Mannion) and they have three children Kai, Rhys and Ada. Steven is grandson of the long-time deceased Dr. Tom Donohoe and the recently (March 24) departed Maura Donohoe.
What does Candidacy mean? Admission to Candidacy is a formal stage in which the Church recognises a candidate’s commitment to continue his journey of formation, prayer, study, pastoral service and discernment towards the possibility of ordination as a permanent deacon. It is not ordination, but it is a significant step on the journey.
The Mass will be concelebrated by Most Rev. Paul Connell, Bishop of Ardagh & Clonmacnois, and Most Rev. Kevin Doran, Bishop of Achonry and Elphin.

Meeting of the No to Solar Farm group
Following the posted notice for a solar farm in Lanesboro and into the parish of Rathcline a group has formed to make their dissatisfaction known to Longford County Council, the planning authority, and create an awareness of what they perceive to be the disadvantages of the solar farm. Regular meetings have taken place over the past few weeks and they are building up an appeal to the planning application as to why this project should not go ahead.
The Lanesborough says No to solar farm group will host a public meeting on this coming Friday night 4th September in Lanesboro Parish Hall at 8pm. The group invites everyone to go along and hear for themselves the reservations of the group.
The group says “that objecting to this energy development does not mean rejecting green energy. There are better options and ones that should ensure future developments are regulated and don’t negatively impact rural communities, farmland, wildlife and the environment”.
First Chapters Opens
First Chapters developed by Una and Michael Hanley is a brand-new, custom-built early year’s childcare service on the Longford Road. This new building will offer Full-day care, Early Childhood Care and Education, and National Childcare Scheme across three purpose-designed rooms.
Having heard so much about this new development I dropped in the other day to see for myself what all the talk was about. I was greeted and shown around by a very friendly lady, Sinead, and she showed me all the facilities that the kids going into First Chapters will be encountering and they are really extraordinary. The building is kitted out for a maximum of 38 young people and already First Chapters is almost full.
We wish Una, Michael, along with Sinead and the entire team the very best for a very successful new business.
Sympathy
The month of August has been a particularly sad one for Peter and Rachel Clancy and their children Donnacha, Fionn and Cáitlin as on Sunday 2nd August Rachel’s father Gervaise (Gerry) Mathews, Knocklyon, Templeogue, Dublin passed away unexpectedly. Married for 61 years and only 18 days later Rachel’s mother Ethna Mathews was reunited with her beloved Gerry as she passed away following a short illness on Thursday 20th August.
We extend our deepest sympathy to Rachel, Peter, Donnacha, Fionn, Cáitlin and their extended family on those very sad occasions.

The Shannonside heritage group would like to thank all those members of the community who visited St. Mary’s Hall to view our recent ‘Heritage at Risk’ exhibition.
We were overwhelmed by the numbers who came and the kind comments left behind, many visitors stayed for ell over an hour taking in the photographs of ‘lost’ Lanesborough and many others visited more than once.
Such was the response that, by request, the Society are going to put back the exhibition, just for three days, between Christmas and the New Year so that many of our returning Christmas visitors can have a chance to see it. Hopefully the Christmas exhibition will have some new material as well.
The exhibition has now been resurrected in the Innis Ree Lodge Nursing Home so some of our elderly less mobile residents can enjoy it.
Again, many thanks to all who kindly donated exhibits and to St. Mary’s Hall for being so accommodating. Special thanks must go to John Casey, Brigid Mullooly, Margaret Mullooly, Eugene Hester and Martin O’Halloran whose attendance and ability to answer questions from long ago were invaluable to its success.

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Celine and Eugene Hester, Knock, and Geraldine and Louis Skelly, Aughamore, their families and extended families on the death on their sister Kathleen Fallon, Lightfield, Newtowncashel who passed away on Saturday 22nd August.
Lough Ree Athletic Club
The Club will recommence Training on Tuesday 8th September with a session at the woods in Lanesborough, for 3rd class and upwards. As we are going into the Cross Country Season, we will also focus on training for the Roscommon Cross Country Championship and the Primary Schools Cross Country Championship (dates and venues to be confirmed). Both are great events particularly the schools.
To assist with fitness, Roscommon County Board is running a preseason conditioning session at Mote Park on a Sunday mornings, which a few of our athletes have already attended. Well done to Katie, Conor and Zarah. All are welcome to attend this session.
Sliabh Bán Harvest Festival
This year the running of the third annual Sliabh Bán Harvest Festival will take place on Sunday 20th September at Lismehy. Featuring at the festival will be Vintage Threshing, Vintage Corn Grinding, Vintage Saw Mill, Stationary Engines, Vintage Tractors, Vintage Cars, Butter Churning, Boxty Making, Wood Turning, Blacksmith and Farrier, hay making and free horse and carriage rides. Music on the day will be provided by the very popular Billy Garvan. The entry fee is just €10 while children are free.

Private one-to-one grinds in French and German in preparation for the Leaving Cert are available locally. Individual lessons will be tailored to each student with exam focused preparation and practice. Adult, children and teenagers – all levels welcome and the grinds will cover speaking, grammar, vocabulary, and writing.

The Longford branch of The Alzheimer Society will hold their monthly support group on Wednesday 9th September at 7.00pm in our office, 2 Earl Street, Longford, opposite Mollaghan’s furniture shop. Championship Updates
Last weekend proved a fruitless weekend on both sides of the bridge. St. Faithleach’s travelled to Strokestown with high hope of making the knockout stages of the Roscommon Senior championship. Alas, it was not to be as Elphin emerged victorious by just one point.
Rathcline whose fate was already known but had the chance of going out on a high and at half time it looked so good but in the end a comeback by Ardagh /Moydow earned them a draw.
Both Rathcline and St. Faithleach’s now go into the relegation playoff with Rathcline being first out when they play Carrickedmond on Friday night next at 8pm in Kenagh. At the time of writing I do not see fixtures for St. Faithleach’s on the Roscommon website.
Never before has both sides needed your support and it is very important that the supporters from the whole community come out and support our local teams and added vocal support could be a great boot to them succeeding in the playoffs.

Echoes of BnM and ESB: The Grand Lanesboro & Ballyleague Reunion
We are remembering the parents that came to Lanesboro and Ballyleague and the surrounding communities and all their families that grew up going to school in the all the schools around the three housing estates of The Green, Cloontuskert and Derryhaun. There were also a number of years of apprentices that came to Lanesboro Vocational School now Lanesboro Community College and the committee would love to welcome them back too.
To help with the reconnection of everyone we would like that everyone that reads these notes and that have connections to anyone that comes from the above mentioned families that they would pass the word around of a giant gathering in Lanesboro on Saturday 26th September where we will all reconnect with Bord na Mona and ESB.
It is fitting and a right time to do this as the power station has been closed for seven years now and the Bord na Mona works is rapidly come to its life end and we should all celebrate what both companies and the people that it brought to work here and bring families and former workers back to the community that they made so great.

Rathcline 50/50 Draw
The draw for the club 50/50 draw took place on Monday night last 24th August was for a pool that amounted to €920. The winning ticket was in the name of the Patrick Dowd, Fortwilliam, Newtowncashel. As usual the winning cheque will be left in O’Brien’s for collection and can be usually collected on Wednesday evenings.
The Rathcline 50/50 draw takes place every Monday night in one of our local bars at 7.30pm. Your continued generous support is keeping the pool at a wonderfully high figure and it is greatly appreciated as it is making a great difference to the winner each week.

“Seeking Safety” is a free coping skills program for women affected by trauma, mental health and/or addiction. Lanesboro Garda Station
Lanesboro Garda Station has just posted a notice telling of its opening times where the station will have a member of the force in attendance for the public. Lanesboro station will be open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9am to 11am. The station will be open at those times unless the local Garda is dealing with a situation that requires their attendance.
Co. Longford Citizens Advice Centre
Co. Longford Citizens Information Service has recently been restructured and is currently under new management.
They continue to provide free, impartial, and confidential information, advice, and advocacy services to the public on social services, rights, and entitlements. The range of areas covered by the citizens information centre are extremely wide including social welfare rights and entitlements and other social issues such as employment, health services, housing, education, family matters and consumer rights, all where people need access to information.
The way people access the services changed during Covid and now they currently deal with a large number of queries over the telephone, however, they continue to provide our drop-in times and welcome people to their face-to-face service five mornings a week from the Longford office. The services are provided by experienced trained Information Officers who are there to help you.
The centre is located on level 1 within Longford Shopping Centre and direction can be obtained at the reception desk from Monday to Friday from 9.30am until 5.00pm. The office closes for lunch from 1pm until 2pm.
Gambling Anonymous
Meetings for those with problems with gambling take place in in the Family Centre, Longford (at the back of St. Mel’s Cathedral) on Tuesdays at 8pm.
Support Group
Relatives and friends of anyone who has an alcoholic problem are welcome to attend meetings in the Family Centre at the back of St. Mel’s Cathedral. The meetings take place every Tuesday evenings at 7pm.
ALONE
Support line for older people
ALONE manage a national support line and additional support for older people who have concerns or are still facing difficulties relating to Covid-19. Professional staff is available to answer queries and give advice and reassurance where necessary. The support line is open seven days a week from 8am until 8pm. Text TALK to 50808 to begin.

Roscommon University Hospital Injury Unit is available from 8am to 8pm seven days, a week and the contact number is 09066 32212.
Emergency Department deals with serious injuries and life-threatening emergencies if you need urgent medical help. They are open 24 hours a day and can be contacted by phoning 999 or 112.

Sacrament of Reconciliation: Confession time in the Prayer Room takes place on the first Friday of each month from 6.30pm to 7pm.The next opportunity is on Friday 4th September.
Smart Recovery: Smart recovery is an evidence based addiction recovery group, where participants learn self-empowering techniques to aid their recovery by overcoming addictive behaviour. Jubilee of Marriages: Couples celebrating their Silver, Ruby, Golden, Diamond, Platinum or other wedding anniversaries are invited to attend one of two Jubilee Masses, along with their families and friends on either Sunday 4th October at 2.30pm in Ballaghaderreen Cathedral or Sunday 11th October at 2.30pm in Kiltoom Church. Bishop Kevin will celebrate both Masses. Light refreshments will be served afterwards for all in attendance. Dioceses of Achonry And Elphin Pilgrimage To Lourdes –
Assisted Pilgrim Section: The Dioceses of Achonry and Elphin Pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place from 28th August – 2nd September inclusive, under the leadership of Bishop Kevin Doran. Pilgrimage highlights includes Mass at the Grotto, Torchlight and Blessed Sacrament Processions, Anointing of the Sick, Water Ceremony. Flights are ex Knock Airport. The Pilgrimage includes the Assisted Pilgrim Section. Those who travel as part of the Assisted Pilgrim Section will stay in Accueil Notre Dame, which is situated near the Grotto and Sanctuary area. They will be cared for by the Diocesan Pilgrimage Care Team whilst in Lourdes. Application forms for the Assisted Pilgrim Section and full details are available from Very Rev.
