New School Principal to LCC
A Longford native, and a past pupil of St. Patrick’s Primary school in Ballinamuck and Moyne Community School, Brendan Mc Glynn has been appointed as the new Principal of Lanesboro Community College. Brendan takes on the role after spending the last decade as Deputy Principal of Coláiste Íoasagaín, Portarlington.
He began his teaching career in Castleknock where he taught Science, Chemistry and Maths. He then spent 7 years in Pobalscoil Íosolde in Palmerstown. From there he moved to Coláiste Choilm in Tullamore where he remained until he moved to Coláiste Iosagin Portarlington as Deputy Principal in June 2017.
As a School Leader, Brendan has a wealth of experience in relation to curriculum development, school improvement initiatives and managing change in education. Brendan has said that he is excited for the future in Lanesboro and that he is looking forward to working with the students, staff, parents and wider community in Lanesboro. He is passionate about leading an inclusive, student-centred school where young people are supported in their learning and development. Learning, growing and supporting students to reach their full potential in an open and collaborate way, will be at the forefront of Brendan’s leadership.
We wish Brendan and his school staff the very best for the coming year and years ahead.

Former local passes away
On Thursday last 3rd September we received the sad news of one of our former parishioners and former Rathcline player, Noel O’Dowd, passing away at Mayo Hospice, Castlebar. Noel was predeceased by his parents in Rathcline by his sister Marie, and his brothers Brendan and Cyril. Noel will be always remembered locally as a warm and friendly young man and an excellent footballer giving his all to Rathcline. In 1973 Noel started his banking career working with ACC in Tuam before moving to Ballina as Branch Manager and creating his forever home on the outskirts of the town. In his time in Ballina Noel’s banking acumen and personality warmed him to the local population and for a time he took on the management of Ballina Stepenites with great success. As Noel was a great conversationalist and he loved meeting people the loss of his voice during his bravely borne illness was a severe setback to him He was an outdoor person loved golf, shooting, his dogs, GAA. Although away from his native soil Noel never lost his love for his community and county and he was a reader of the Longford Leader every week.
Noel’s remains reposed at his home in Ballina on Friday last 4th September and his Requiem Mass took place in St. Muredach’s Cathedral and burial followed in Killanley cemetery. To his wife Mary, his daughter Deirdre, his son Conor, their families, his brother Kieran, his sisters Doreen and Olive, relatives and friend we extend our deepest sympathy.
Energy Master Plans Online Launch – 16th September, 7.30pm.
The Energy Master Plans for Lanesborough, Ballyleague, and Longford Town have now been completed and will be launched in an online meeting on Wednesday 16th September at 7.30 pm. The Energy Master Plans have been prepared by Climate 23 Consulting and funded by SEAI together with Longford and Roscommon County Councils. The master plans include details of current energy use in homes, businesses, and community building and outline a range of energy and cost saving measures and potential grant aid sources.
The plans were developed under SEAI’s Sustainable Energy Communities (SEC) programme, with Ballyleague SEC, the Longford Renewable Energy SEC in Lanesborough, and the Longford Town SEC.
Marvellous work being done
Congratulations to Lanesboro Tourism and their Community Enterprise Scheme workers and the Ballyleague Tidy Towns committee who are ensuring that both sides of the bridge are looking in pristine condition. The excellent comments to us in the shop all summer have been fabulous and it is great to see that day on day this care and attention to our community cleanliness and beauty does not stop. All those involved should take a bow for their great work.
The Solstice Choir to sing in the Backstage Theatre.
Following on from their huge success in the Roscommon Arts Centre the Roscommon Solstice Choir will present “Songs that Built a Nation” in the Backstage Theatre Longford on Wednesday and Thursday next, 9th and 10th September.
With a script by well-known Roscommon Playwright and Historian Tommy Murray the choir will present “Epic moments of Irish History as told in Ballads, Songs, Poems and Music”. Beginning with the United Irishmen Rebellion of 1798 the show tells the story of this traumatic and tumultuous time in our history up to and including the War of Independence 1920/21.
This show which has been described as “a very moving production, which immediately takes its place as one of the outstanding highlights of this choir’s distinguished ‘body of work’ is definitely not to be missed.

Combo fit class with Regina
The Combo Fit class will resumes on Thursday 10th September in St. Marys Hall, Lanesboro. 7.30pm.. The class will incorporate low impact Pilates Movements, using body weight, light hand weights, resistance bands. This will improve posture, balance, bone density, and will enhance joint mobility.

Manoeuvres at the Power Station
I have just received notice that there will once again be Defence Force Manoeuvres taking place at Lanesboro Power Station from Monday 14th to Wednesday 16th September. The 6th Battalion based in Custume Barracks Athlone will be the unit involved in these manoeuvres.
Similar to the previous manoeuvres there will be a good bit of noise coming from the area and there is no need for anyone to be alarmed.

Lough Ree Athletic Club
The Club has recommenced training on Tuesday with notified for 3rd class and upwards. As we are going into the Cross Country season, we will also focus on training for the Roscommon Cross Country Championship and the Primary Schools Cross Country Championship (dates and venues yet to be confirmed). Both are great events particularly the schools.
To assist with fitness, Roscommon County Board is running a preseason conditioning session at Mote Park on Sunday mornings, which a few of our athletes have already attended. Well done to Katie, Conor and Zarah. All are welcome to attend this session.
County Champions
Many congratulations to the St. Faithleach’s U16 Girls team who were crowned county champions last weekend when following a tense game they overcame St. Barry’s in the final on a scoreline of 4-8 to St. Barry’s 3-9. Credit must also go to their team management of Keith Curran, Steve Smith and Laura O’Donnell.
Sliabh Bán Harvest Festival
This year the running of the third annual Sliabh Bán Harvest Festival will take place on Sunday 20th September at Lismehy. Featuring at the festival will be Vintage Threshing, Vintage Corn Grinding, Vintage Saw Mill, Stationary Engines, Vintage Tractors, Vintage Cars, Butter Churning, Boxty Making, Wood Turning, Blacksmith and Farrier, hay making and free horse and carriage rides. Music on the day will be provided by the very popular Billy Garvan. The entry fee is just €10 while children are free.

French and German Grinds
Private one-to-one grinds in French and German in preparation for the Leaving Cert are available locally. Individual lessons will be tailored to each student with exam focused preparation and practice. No to Solar Farm Meeting Report
A highly attended public meeting, organised by the Protect Lanesborough Committee, regarding an upcoming planning application for a solar farm of 363 acres around the Lanesborough area was held on 4th September in the Harish Hall
The committee want to say a massive thank you to our local community for turning out to have a robust and vital discussion about the future of our area.
The committee also sincerely thank our public representatives for attending and pledging their continued support: Michael Carrigy, Joe Flaherty, Sean Mimnagh, and Martin Scally, as well as Pat O’Rourke (who attended on behalf of Ciaran Mullooly and Michael Fitzmaurice). Echoes of BnM and ESB: The Grand Lanesboro & Ballyleague Reunion
We are remembering the parents that came to Lanesboro and Ballyleague and the surrounding communities and all their families that grew up going to school in the all the schools around the three housing estates of The Green, Cloontuskert and Derryhaun. There were also a number of years of apprentices that came to Lanesboro Vocational School now Lanesboro Community College and the committee would love to welcome them back too.
To help with the reconnection of everyone we would like that everyone that reads these notes and that have connections to anyone that comes from the above mentioned families that they would pass the word around of a giant gathering in Lanesboro on Saturday 26th September where we will all reconnect with Bord na Mona and ESB.
It is fitting and a right time to do this as the power station has been closed for seven years now and the Bord na Mona works is rapidly come to its life end and we should all celebrate what both companies and the people that it brought to work here and bring families and former workers back to the community that they made so great.
The organising group has got great responses from many people and for that we are hugely grateful, it is not too late if you have not furnished photographs, you can still forward them to lanesbororeconnection@gmail.com or drop physical copies into O’Brien’s. Championship Updates
Last weekend proved to be a fruitless one for both St. Faithleach’s and Rathcline as both strive to beat the dreaded relegation to Intermediate football in 2027.
Rathcline travelled to Kenagh to play Carrickedmond and it was only in the late moments of the game that Carrickedmond got the winning scores. St. Faithleach’s played Western Gaels in Tulsk with Western Gaels emerging victors on a 2-16 to 1-14 scoreline.
As I write, I cannot see on the Roscommon GAA website a fixture for St. Faithleach’s but I am led to believe that their next game will be the weekend after next and it is very important that everyone from the community goes along to support the team in this very critical game.
For Rathcline they will play Mullinalaghta on Friday evening next at 8pm in McGann Park, Kenagh and it is very important that a great crowd will turn out to support the team in this very crucial game.

Rathcline 50/50 Draw
The draw for the club 50/50 draw took place on Monday night last 31st August was for a pool that amounted to €662. The winning ticket was in the name of the Danny Cox, Curraghroe. As usual the winning cheque will be left in O’Brien’s for collection and can be usually collected on Wednesday evenings.

Lanesboro Garda Station has just posted a notice telling of its opening times where the station will have a member of the force in attendance for the public. Lanesboro station will be open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9am to 11am. The station will be open at those times unless the local Garda is dealing with a situation that requires their attendance.
Co. Longford Citizens Advice Centre
Co. Longford Citizens Information Service has recently been restructured and is currently under new management.
They continue to provide free, impartial, and confidential information, advice, and advocacy services to the public on social services, rights, and entitlements. The range of areas covered by the citizens information centre are extremely wide including social welfare rights and entitlements and other social issues such as employment, health services, housing, education, family matters and consumer rights, all where people need access to information.
The way people access the services changed during Covid and now they currently deal with a large number of queries over the telephone, however, they continue to provide our drop-in times and welcome people to their face-to-face service five mornings a week from the Longford office. The services are provided by experienced trained Information Officers who are there to help you.
The centre is located on level 1 within Longford Shopping Centre and direction can be obtained at the reception desk from Monday to Friday from 9.30am until 5.00pm. The office closes for lunch from 1pm until 2pm.
Gambling Anonymous
Meetings for those with problems with gambling take place in in the Family Centre, Longford (at the back of St. Mel’s Cathedral) on Tuesdays at 8pm.

Hall Caretaker: We thank Liam Garvey for the wonderful service he rendered for the past number of months. We are currently looking for a new caretaker for Ballyleague Hall. It is a part-time position involving a few hours a week. The role entails taking hall bookings; setting up for events, ordering oil fills etc. Assistance would be given to whoever takes over the role. Station Masses: The Station Masses will commence in September. The Station Masses were a great success in February and we are looking forward to a greater celebration in September. If anyone would like to have their area’s Station Mass in their home could they get in contact with Fr. Dan to arrange a convenient date.
Pastoral Council: We will be holding our next Ballyleague Church Pastoral Council meeting in on Monday 21st September at 7pm in Aras Mhuire meeting room and all members are asked to attend.

Jubilee of Marriages: Couples celebrating their Silver, Ruby, Golden, Diamond, Platinum or other wedding anniversaries are invited to attend one of two Jubilee Masses, along with their families and friends on either Sunday 4th October at 2.30pm in Ballaghaderreen Cathedral or Sunday 11th October at 2.30pm in Kiltoom Church. Bishop Kevin will celebrate both Masses. Light refreshments will be served afterwards for all in attendance. As each couple celebrating an Anniversary will receive a certificate from Bishop Kevin, they are asked to register their details at www.achonryelphin.ie
